hey thanks for this im not sure if im opening a can of worms here but this surely must be a better answer than running the old cj1 lump?reliability factor is bad!!

ive just sourced myself a cracker of a raider, engine has seen better days as usual!!
its crying out for a sweet engine,so fancy giving it a shot!!
never done engine conversion before but changed a couple of engines on other cars so here goes :coffee::p

once again thanks for the help!!!!!!

c1j is a very reliable engine, lots of 172s go wrong and when they do its usually terminal and requires a new engine

yes sorry c1j!!!!
so what does every1 think??
should i stay with the old c1j lump or go for the 172 n/a lump??
im not wanting big performance as i want to retain the looks of my raider and show her off lol!!
so reliable horse for every day kind of driving.

either way i will be rebuilding the lump from start to finish but i could do with some info on past experience with what lump to choose??????

you won't be able to keep the standard looks of your raider, you will need a hump in the bonnet to clear the taller 172 engine.

In 16months(ish) i've done 23,000 miles and only had to do a headgasket because of a water leak. So please dont think of the C1J being unreliable, i run 16psi on average

hi scoff thanks for that
just looking through some of the threads,is there no way round this?
obviously the block/engine is taller, but can it be tilted back or is the difference just to greater??
cheers scoff

hi chris did you rebuild your engine can i ask?
is there any info on doing this?

ive just found out about the height of the 172 engine and neeeding to mod the bonnet
to fit so this instantly sways me off, straight away as it is so important to retain the original look with subtle mods!!

The car engine upgrades were done by BB tuning but the block / internals were all std other than cam and never rebuilt from memory (owned the car before Chris) C1J take loads of abuse if looked after ;)

Yea what gobby said ;)!

As for the rebuild question just the haynes manual will be needed and a dry place to work have it in out and done in a weekend if you got all the bits you want to change and are patient!

it's quite a bit taller mate, so no ammount of lean will get it. most chaps use a clio 16v style bonnet, me included.

Id say keep the c1j and work on that prob work out cheaper than a full engine swap.. The c1j is a good engine will last years and be reliable if done right..

it's the old debate, new vs. old. most of the people that like the C1J are a fan if it because it's original, came with the car, they know it and so on. the truth is that a modern 16v F engine is better in so many ways. you need to think objectively and without prejudice.

Fecking hell that took a while, you must of been looking for about 3 years now!??!

Missed out on a cracker with my old one mate, at least you might of looked after it unlike the present owner :(

Anyway, If it were me (and I've been there) I'd go for the NA 172 engine, although mine was the first AFAIK so that was partly the reason for doing it I found that the car was mega reliable and very quick even in NA form!!

I guess it also depends on what sort of power you want from it? an F4R turbo engine running 250hp still be reliable where as a C1J at that power would be on the limit.

Got any pics of the raider? It must be mega mint!

when i got back in touch i was well pissd with myself that i never bought it!!!
think it was the distance that swayed me off it but oh how stupid was i!!!!!!
distance will never sway me now lol!!!!!

3 years,sounds about right lol!!!

everything i have been looking at was bad, they were wanting mad money like 3-4 grand but with no service history and to be fair i thought if i wait long enough one to my standards will come?? no luck!!!

because i work off-shore a month at a time i have missed a few while i have been away,i think that your one and the one that was in the top gear mag possibly 3 have came up in the 3 years that i have been looking.

anyway i decided to buy one that has been off the road hidden away in a garage.
turns out the guy that was selling it,wanted it going to a good home and had been selling it for a while,he had been having young guys coming looking at it that were instantly wanting to break it or stick a goalpost halfords spoiler on it.
so with these guys he refused to sell it to them, and any young guy that didnt respect the car for what it was.
so i came along started yapping away to him (which im good at lol!!!);)
straight away told him my story of wanting a near standard raider and to take it back to as mint as possible and how long i had been looking and the guy practically gave me the car for nothing !!!!!!

so now i have a raider that cost me £350,i reckon with some blood sweat and hard graft oh and some ££££s aswell i can get the raider i was looking for.
and save myself some money at the same time!!

hows your 5 doing anyway?

and happy new year to ya ashy:wasntme::wasntme::wasntme::wasntme::wasntme:: wasntme::wasntme::wasntme::wasntme:

I think just a bonnet bulge would look subtle :) especially if the rest of the car was standard.. I don't think anyone would really say anything bad about it if anything they'd be intrigued!! although I've always been a fan of the intergrale's :)
