Hi,
Fifth gear on the JB3 has failed tonight as in it pushes out of 5th when you load the box, from memory the last time this happened on a box i had it was the bearing under the fifth gear cox had worn and fell apart. This make the cox twist under load and push the sector back out of that gear. Anybody else had this happen to them???

I fear you're on your own here Nick - we don't delve into the black art here, which is a shame. It would be interesting to see if anyone has done gearbox work.

Hold on a mo, didn't someone do a full strip down and rebuild once and photo document it? I think I may have downloaded the pictures at least. I'll have a look.

Think it was mat code red. Can you get to 5th gear by just removing the black casing?

Yea you can, there's a lock washer on the end of the shaft that u undo and pull it apart.

Yep, 5th gear can be replaced with the gearbox in situ.
I posted the photos to phil for his rebuild thread when I fitted a quaife diff to his gearbox.;)

I stripped all the teeth off 5th and had the same problem. The box will most likely be full of metal swarf mate, probably rebuild time

Its the missis 5 not mine and it only running standard boost so i doubt its destroyed the teeth :D. There was no warning sign's either just failed overnight ?? Need to get the cap off and have a butchers.

You might be suprised, it happened to me when putting my foot down in 5th at 70mph to overtake on a duel carriageway, 10lbs boost in my old white gtt. Box was low mileage too, weak as piss jb3

This is what i swapped last time on the box that did it, the bearing had worn in the old one. Fingers crossed :crap:

I had 5th gear go on a JC5, stripped all the teeth off and cracked the casing inside

Well it's in bits. The nut on the end of 5th has come undone ;) does it just lock back up or is there some special thing on there that stops it undoing?

Get yourself onto Facebook mate and contact Colin Cook (if he's not already on here tonight) he's got a trick to lock the box into 2nd & 4th gear (or something like that?) To allow you to nip the bolt back up with the necessary piece of scaffold pole  ;)

Red threadlock is a friend for nuts that shouldn't come undone :)

Don't air gun it in any gear... Locked in two gears etc....
You have more chance of breaking a tooth off if you do.

(Not teaching you to suck eggs Nick, but locktite the nut).

Too late :) however I did feed it a rag to jam the gears from turning so its acted like anti shock device, I have 5th back  and it's the Missis gearbox anyway :D time will tell .....

I had my 5th gear do the same a long time ago ('94 I think) and I was able to get in working again by pulling apart 5th gear with the Gearbox on the car. The Needle Roller Bearings had let go, so I simply replaced them and reassembled using the same 5th Gear.

Six months later, while driving back home on a long journey (5hrs) 5th gear decided it didn't want its teeth anymore! I can only put this down to the stress fatigue put into the gear while the bearing was shot?...

I suppose I'm just saying make sure your roadside recovery is up to date! :D
