So after many years of longing for another r5 I finally got one about 3 weeks ago and I love it. I didn't pay a lot for the car and it does need work but what 5 doesn't.
It's a g reg and to me it's in fairly good condition :)
Things I can see that it needs so far are as follows-
Petrol cap rust cut out and replaced
2 doors replaced due to rust
2 sills will be done
Tailgate hinge needs replaced
Any other panels will be sorted in time
This seems like a lot tbh lol
Engine wise I'm unsure from a visual I would say the following -
Replace and address some of the brittle pipework
Head gasket
Carb rebuild/ clean
Water pump
Alternator
Radiator
Thermostat
Turbo recon
Clutch release bearing
Some of it I want to be done due to wanting it to be perfect as opposed to not knowing what state it's in.
Interior is pretty perfect tbh
Could do with a scrub but no major rips or tears or any mould or damp.no broken bits either.
I personally don't even know how to do brakes or an oil change but that is going to change rapidly lol my last 5 just had money thrown at it this one will be at a much slower pace as I want too and can only really do a lot of it myself :)
Ps I'm after a few bits and bobs which ill no doubt list later on if anyone has spare I'd much appreciate :) thanks to caymanr26 on here for sorting me with a turbo down pipe already ... Legend .

Looks a good base for a tidy project, take it you have a haynes/blue workshop manual if you are doing alot of it yourself, alot of advice on here too, love the colour :) :agree:

safehands

i have the green one but not the blue :( im gonna get one though :)
im not hating the colour but not really in love with it either.im unsettled lol.
when the bodywork is addressed and its time for actual painting im sure youll hear me about the colour :)
yeah it was a good buy...there arent many in scotland as far as im aware so i snapped this one up.

So I've got my hands on the blue manual :) this is how it's going.
Not knowing how to really hold a spanner in my hands I've successfully removed carb and the majority of the front bodywork to inspect the shell. I knew bumper mounts would be wrecked and also the sills but on quick looking the comparison I have is to go with my old car and they don't seem to bad. Floor seems ok too anyway here is some pics. :)

just tackle it one area at a time and before you know it your winning the battle.. my gtt is sat in the garage in bits but is totally solid after hitting it with the welder..

many gtt owners still think they have solid 5's, but they haven't looked hard enough..

get it sorted and you can be part of the so-solid-crew:scared:

Soooooo solid!!!!

Nice project thread mate- I really like that colour too!

There'll be times when you hate it, but when it runs and you're out getting the thumbs up and people stopping u to talk about your car its well worth it mate.

Good work mate, sills look like they have a little rust, if you need new outters National Spares do them about £45.00 aside delivered. :)

safehands
25-06-2013, 11:24
yeah i seen national do them :) im gonna get someone to come look at the bodywork and see what they reckon.im quite happy with how the bodywork is tbh

so solid crew is what i need...obviously minus the 21 second part :dearme: :)

Well with the weather being decent I wanted to get to the car yesterday and get the remainder if bodywork off. Remember this is my first venture tackling an r5 myself so I'm loving removing every little bolt.
The rust you can see is pretty **** :( but I didn't expect any less. The petrol tank side is the worst but I'm getting it sorted in time.
On that note from what people can see in pics what would you say is a guide price to getting it sorted? I've been to 2 garages who have taken my number and said they will call a d come to the car but as if yet they haven't bothered their arse :(

Ouch but... this can all be sorted, look at all the other successful restoration threads you will be bored when its all finished. :)

Are you planning on welding this yourself?

safehands
08-07-2013, 12:29
No I've never done a stitch of welding in my life. I want to do as much as I can myself though but this I think exceeds my limit

mingblus3
08-07-2013, 12:39
I'm in the same situation. Want to do all the work but have my limits and it would cost a fortune in tools to get kitted out.

Wait for some others to offer advice.

Was it originally black?

safehands
08-07-2013, 15:07
Yeah original black. Think might put it back to that it I really like pearl white

09-07-2013, 09:52

thats alot of work!

strange how theres so much rust but yet the cars had a colour change? surely when changing colour some of that rust was noticable?

good luck with your project, all the best :)

Well u wanted to get into the car a little today to have a good scope at the floor... Feelings are mixed. Took out the seats and carpet... So in happy with that... As I am novice at all this I was pleased with myself lol the floor seems in an ok condition but drivers side inner sill leading onto the floor is in a bit of a crap state just an inch or so in from the inner. Some pics I took. Still can't stop me living 5s.... In planning on a Campus or a prima after Xmas just to run about in :)

Mr Raider
14-07-2013, 22:54
Looks like it needs floor and inner sill welding drivers side, whats it like under rubber mat around pedals? Good idea taking carpet up mate, i had small water leak and did so about 8 years ago and still mean to put it back in, although im keeping an eye on the floor pan with no carpet in! lol  :agree:

safehands
15-07-2013, 08:43
Yeah I think it does too. Passenger side seems ok on floor and inner. Outer is a bit patchy. I have can issue with my front arch. Dies anyone know I'd I can get a replacement from anywhere. I was even contemplating buying a new front end to deal with all the arch / bumper mount problems.

Jeff Ninebar
15-07-2013, 10:41
looks like the drivers floor has hand a panel welded in at some point and not been sealed up too well, may be why its rusted out so much.

safehands
15-07-2013, 13:24
Yeah u can see someone has tried to do something but not to well... Along with the paint job... Painting with the body kit still on :( dafties.

chris
15-07-2013, 20:36
Got plenty to do there mate my gt did the same on o/s floor pan it turned out heater matrix was leaking I also did inner and outer sills and bumper mounts its a lot of work are you guns do it yourself ?

safehands
15-07-2013, 20:43
No mate my mate is gonna do the bodywork. I'm total novice so what I can do I will but I'm gonna try lend a hand whilst he's at it

chris
15-07-2013, 21:07
Shame your not closer could do the work for tattoos  but I would defiantly check its not heater matrix it's easy with car stripped out mate:)

safehands
15-07-2013, 21:57
Matrix is passenger side? I will check next time or even replace. Car is non running anyway . So not in mad rush just want to solidify the shell before moving to engine. :) well the bodywork welding will be tattoo time trade with my mate :)

15-07-2013, 22:00

15-07-2013, 22:19
Wow, you'd have never guessed with how the car looked it'd hide so much rust. You've got your work cut out. But fair play for sticking with it and getting it fully restored.:agree:

safehands
16-07-2013, 08:57
Yeah it's mental how much is hidden. In just happy to have another 5. I could bin this one for a better shell but I've hot a couple problems with that. 1 I don't want to risk not finding another close by. 2 I don't have a big or even medium size cash pot to be working from lol . 3 even if I got one the price would be reflected in the state of it. I got my car as it sits for 300 quid so I'm over the moon. My first 5 cost me 4 times that and again on the outside it looked great but it was in not a far better state than this. So this way ill get it sorted from the very bottom base and work all the way up till its back on the road. Bottom line I'm in love with renault 5s lolololol

Nad-5GTT
16-07-2013, 10:38

I know I've had a lot on :) new business new shop all the drama :)
Welding should start in the next month or 2. Ordered carb service kit from club shop so I'll be cracking on with that when it arrives. Any ideas on shipping times from the shop by any chance. Also ordered new brake master cylinder which has arrived :) next step I think is fit the doors with cleaned up locks :)
