omex rev limiter with launch anyone know where best and easyest place to fit one of these ?

Goobie

People normally just fix them in the scuttle area mate! Although there plenty of space in the cowling area under the steering wheel buddy, so easier for when setting the limiter and sorting the wiring for the clutch switch to, so I guess ignore what I've first said and fit it round there instead.

i was thinking of putting it to the right hand side of stering wheel but mainley refering to the wireing side of things where they go really and the launch switch where does that go to the clutch ???

I had mine fitted by Thundercat off here.
He made me a bracket and mounted it like the pic below.

Regards to fitting you need to connect the wires off the limiter to the + & - of the coil and then earth the unit to good clean metal.
The Aei module needs to come out for proper fitting as does the coil.
Another hole also needs to be drilled through the plastic aei casing to gain access to one of the coil connections.

the launch switch where does that go to the clutch ???

You should have instructions? Or is this used item?

Anyway, the launch switch works the same way as the brake light pedal switch. :agree:

Your need to drill a hole for it I think, so the switch isn't tripped when the clutch pedal is press there fore actives the limiter, so when you let off the clutch pedal, it comes up and presses the switch (same as brake light switch as already stated.) which then shuts off the limiter and away you go.

It will make more sense when you get the kit out and look at it.

Basically take the coil from its 'cradle' which is the AEI unit itself (a couple of tiny, but long torx I seem to remember) this exposes the coil connections that you connect the rev limiter to.

" launch control" the ultimate jb/jc gearbox breaker, turns tight syncro gearboxes to porridge :laugh:
you have been warned;)

KEV 5 GT

shall i leave the launch control off then if thats the case ? lol  although my gearbox aint far from porridge anyway :D

I used couple bullet connectors on the front of the AEI, just above where the tdc plugs in. Have to strip bit of the plastic away for the connector to slide in.

KEV 5 GT
03-06-2013, 19:41
yellow did you connect it to the tdc wires then ?

*Yellow*
03-06-2013, 19:54
No, above where you plug the tdc lead in is where the coil connectore are.

KEV 5 GT
03-06-2013, 20:07
so i gotta take the aei to bits then

Will sort for you tomorrow, you'll need couple of the red bullet connectors to crimp on.

KEV 5 GT

I've got the re 208 aei is this the same as I don't think I've got them connectors ?

Matt@CodeRedMotorsports
04-06-2013, 22:15
Re208 is phase 1, Re209 is phase 2.
No real difference apart from a 500rpm difference in limit.

KEV 5 GT
04-06-2013, 22:21
Is the 209 better ?

*Yellow*
04-06-2013, 22:31
I've got the re 208 aei is this the same as I don't think I've got them connectors ?

You got to cut some of the plastic away to get to the pins and connect the red/blue wires with the red bullett connector. I used a ring connector for the earth/black wire.

KEV 5 GT
04-06-2013, 22:35
So the connector that goes
In between just earth it somewhere else on the unit then ? Or you mean the black wire from limiter ? What do I do with the plug that goes in between ?

*Yellow*
04-06-2013, 22:48
You have 3 wires from the limiter, red ,blue and black. connect these as the picture.

My TDC plug is out because I'm working on car. That will get plugged back in or the car cant run.

KEV 5 GT
04-06-2013, 22:52
Ok mate so just plug that back in between as usual ? I shall give it a shot in the morning and let you know how I get on :) thanks a lot for your help m8

*Yellow*
04-06-2013, 22:56
Your welcome, make sure the red/blue wires go the right way or wont start.

Yes plug the TDC lead in.

KEV 5 GT
04-06-2013, 22:59
I was referring to the blck plug that goes in between the red and blue does this still need to be connected ?

*Yellow*
04-06-2013, 23:20
I didnt have a plug there. Not sure whats that is.

KEV 5 GT

Fitted limiter as per pics and doesn't seem to be any life in it ? Should the lights on it light up when turn ignition on ?

Dave Reed
05-06-2013, 17:55
Are you sure you've got the + & - wires right on the coil?

Also have you connected the earth wire to a good earth?

*Yellow*
05-06-2013, 19:06
When you push both buttons together, it lights up and you set the rev limit.

*Yellow*
05-06-2013, 19:14
Go through the setting up proccess from here, making sure you set it to four cylinders.

I set mine to 1000rpm to make sure it worked, then raised it to my max.

KEV 5 GT
05-06-2013, 21:44
I cut away some plastic from the aei to reveal 2 round pins I connected the + and - to them tryed both ways around and tryed a couple of diferant earth places should the limiter light up when I turn ignition on ? Or do I need to push both buttons in to start it off ?

*Yellow*
05-06-2013, 21:51
Ignition on, (dont start engine) it will only light up when you push both buttons tigether to set the limit. Then you + - to desired limit. turn ignition off or start engine.

Matt@CodeRedMotorsports
05-06-2013, 21:52
.... Just like the manual says.;)

KEV 5 GT
06-06-2013, 18:27
just tryed it as you said yellow and 2 lights came on so im thinking its factory set to 4 cylinder engine and 6000rpm will it stay setup at that now all the time ?

*Yellow*
06-06-2013, 21:18
Yes, will hold that setting untill you reset.

Glad you got there :)

Hi mate, just wondered why you wanted a rev limiter?

Worth having to save damage. Its easy to over rev a high powered c1j & bend pushrods, drop valves or whatever. You can also flat shift.

GTphil
07-06-2013, 17:09
You can flat shift without a rev limiter;) if your quick:coffee:

Trust me a dropped valve is never pretty, when I did it a few years ago I actually had a rev limiter but one of the wires came off the aei:ashamed: so I was in second waiting for the limiter and well, you can guess the rest:cry:

Also worth pointing out that bouncing off it every five minutes is also no good for the collets or valve train even tho it looks and sound ace;) my carb at the time had a 140main and when I hit the limiter it used to pop blue flames:smokin: even at a stand still:wasntme:

You'll get to 500 posts soon mate. :)

Thanks for the replies, I was hoping he could sell it to me as from apart that they do sound mint when you hit it, it seems like a waste of time and money for a non racing car like mine.

Even when I drag away at the lights I feel I have more than enough time to glance at revs and if that doesn't do the trick I can hear the engine.

Really did fancy one. Maybe if one comes up cheap I can live the fast and furious dream

Try driving a high boost c1j in slightly damp conditions - one minute you have traction, next a bang off the hard cut limiter. This is what they are for - you can watch the rev counter as much as you want but without a rev limiter it will be off the scale easily if the wheels start spinning.

KEV 5 GT
08-06-2013, 11:27
whats the best setup option / 6500rpm and hard cut ?

andybond
08-06-2013, 11:28
6500rpm - pppppppppppppffft.

Brigsy will be along in a mo and tell you that his doesnt get going till 7000rpm.

I run a standard 120 main now, with an enlarged second stage for on boost fueling.:agree:

c1j's aren't exactly ideal for massive revs. The bottom end is good it's the head that's the restriction. I'm guessing brigsy doesn't run any valve stem seals, I made the mistake of using them on my engine build, I found most of them in bits in the sump:disagree:

Alex
08-06-2013, 12:16
As said, well worth having a rev limiter on decent powered GTT's. I installed mine only the other day as it had become so easy to invoke wheel spin since fitting the standard 13" Speedlines, particularly so in the wet!

I've run Vauxhall stem seals for the last eight or so years. They made of rubbery type material rather than the plastic that are normally fitted to a c1j.

I'm presuming they don't lift with high revs?

I have my new head sat here awaiting assembly once my pockets fill enough to buy the gasket kit, mulling over if it's worth using these or not, never fitting standard ones ever again, the head is a low mile standard one and the guides appear to be good, I don't mind a bit of smoke on a hot start.

my accelerator pump arm jammed the throttle open once..... limiter saved the day.
throttle springs can snap/pop off, cables can stick. deffinately worth having a limiter imo even if your 5 never gets to it.

My 5 done this many years ago was very scary flying through a twisty country lane flat out, it was only for a short time before I just switched the engine off but was definitely a brown trouser moment. I ended up getting a mate to tow me home who in turn pulled my towing eye off
