Alternator testing?

Does anyone know if its possible to test an alternator?

Following on from THIS (http://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=28449) thread I'm still having issues with charging... I'm wondering if the alternator may be duff but I don't know bless I can test it....:confused:

Should be kicking out 13.5-14v while running if it is then all should be ok. Are you sure the battery isn't nackered? Are you using the gtt loom for the starter and alternator to battery and taking the Volvo loom off the ign switch and alternator?

Hi mate, yeah sure it should be kicking out 13.5v when running but that's the problem, it isn't.... :(

So in terms of testing I mean by putting a multimeter onto the alt to test it directly?

Batt is brand new.

Yes, gtt loom for starter and alternator but its a volvo alternator.

Yeah you want the Volvo alt cut the white plug off the thick red wire off the Volvo loom put a ring terminal onthere, cut the 2pin plug off the gtt loom that goes to old alt then connect the purple wire to alt with female spade connector. Could you take the wires off the alt connect Volvo loom to battery and run off the battery and test from the alt + to batt -?

Done that mate, get no charge :(

Could do, if I get a reading does that mean its working?

Tbh never tried it but it should work. Have you tried another alt?

Does your battery light work? If that bulb is gone the exciter wire wont feed the Alt, and without that it wont charge.

Mine is different now as I'm using megasquirt basicly just the gtt loom going to alt and starter and megasquirt comes off the batt.
