View Full Version : Running Out of Puff

Currently experiencing an odd issue where, under full throttle, up until I get into 4th gear, everything is fine. A couple of seconds into 4th and it pops with a loss of power. I've only had the balls to keep the throttle open once and it continues to miss badly.

I've changed the fuel pump - about to change the fuel filter. It's had new spark plugs/dizzy cap & rotator arm/HT leads so will check the plug gap tomorrow.

Anything I'm missing? Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

Cheers.

sounds like it may be emptying carb float. an afr gauge would prob be best to monitor it with. what psi are you running?

I couldn't say for sure. It does miss a beat every now 'n then, even on idle.

Fuel starvation is what it feels like. My last 5 did the same thing when it was running very low on fuel. Currently running 16 psi.

When I have the funds I'll get a afr gauge sorted, but for the time being I was wondering where I could source a probe to go in the bung for the lamba and software to run off my laptop?

Cool, thanks Kev. I'll defo have a check tomorrow. I posted some info from the articles on your thread. :agree:

I've never looked into a tune/monitoring software or tool so I'll have to dig around to see what is the most suitable option.

did you get a result on the new fpr, i have the same problem in 5th. 25 psi of boost, seems fine through all the gears up until fifth at around 80mph and just gives up. Havent kept my foot in it as i dont want to do any damage.

25psi in fifth:devil: lol Fifth needs an awful lot of fuel so will defiantly require fuel supply mods at that boost;)

you want a high pressure fuel pump, efi/044 etc and either and adjustable fpr or a rising rate one, from the malpasi range.

If your running a phase 1 pump i have seen even these struggle with that sort of boost:disagree:

A big thanks to Elliot (gardner51) for sharing his diagnoses. After PM'ing back and forth, I've replaced the AEI unit and she's good as gold again. Pulls nice and smoothly and doesn't miss a beat now. :)

Cheers fella. :agree::agree:

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

I've started to experience the same problem I'm currently running 22psi ph1 pump original regulator, I have an afr gauge which appears to shoot up to 22 when it happens but I pretty much lift of straight away cus of all the popping and banging etc. Think I'm gonna fit a fuel pressure gauge and see any one got any suggestions for fuel pumps and regs? as I'm looking to run more boost

I use an efi fuel pump, malpassi fuel reg and I still was getting this problem. Change the aei and runs bang on...

Looks like some AEI units are coming to the end of there life now then, not going to last forever

Wonder if those rebuild kits the Europeans used are still available as good AEI units will slowly be hard to find

I didn't have the time to try it first, but it's worth mentioning that I noticed the earthing point for the AEI on the arch was a little loose. It could have been this that caused the problem. As my old AEI has the Armtech rev limiter fitting I may try putting it back on to see if it acts up again with the earth tightened up.
