Fitted a engine about a month or so ago that I bought off a reputable member on here, it was working fine and saw it running before he removed it,
ever since I fitted it, when I start try to start it I can only get it to start if I put foot to floor while turning over, and then it starts, revs to 3000 on its own for a few seconds and dies, also while turning it over I occasionally get a sort of quietish "piff" sounding backfire from the engine bay, and no other combination of choke/throttle can get it to start

this is what I have tried so far

fitted new leads, plugs, rotor and dizzy cap
fitted new tdc sensor
fitted 3x different aei's
swapped fuel pump
swapped fuel pressure reg
swapped carb
fitted new carb base gasket
fitted new fuel pump relay
drained tank and filled with fresh fuel

all the above makes no difference, and it still has the exact same problem, it has a good spark, and plenty fuel, with good pressure, and the few seconds it runs it sounds ok

Im totally feckked off with it now and seriously thinking of selling up, in the 3 years i have own car I have driven it 3 times:cry:

take some good pics of your carb and surrounding pipe work. also perhaps try a new/good used tdc sensor?

possible large air leak? manifold gasket? servo pipes split?

boysie

tdc sensor is brand new,
I will get some pics up of carb to you to look at soon, but pretty sure there right (as I had cocked them up originally!)
don't think manifold gasket is leaking, there no sound of any blowing when it starts, and don't think theres any air leaks either, checked all pipework and fitted a new plenum o ring,

what do you mean by "servo pipes"

thanks:)

did u make sure the breather pipe(pipe runs from rocker cover to one-way valve in inlet manifold) restricter was in situ?

boysie

breather pipes all seem ok, I checked one way valve and its working ok, never checked for restricter......

Heres a few daft ones:

the choke looks like its fully on in the last pic?

Take the carb top off whilst cranking and see what's going on.

Needle jets in the carb base right?

What's that big red wire connected too? I assume its an earth? Does it just go to the other earth point on the bat side? Seems pointless if so, go direct from bat to block whilst starting for the first time!

Are the plug leads right? Can't see from the pics!

boysie
27-05-2013, 21:44
yea, I was messing with choke earlier just to see what happens after I swapped fpr :(

red wire is indeed a bonus earth that went to block as I couldn't get a spark when I first fitted engine ages ago, so stuck another earth on to see what happens, turned out to be a shagged aei....... so I then used it to earth new aei, just cos it was there! but no I know its not really doing anything:wasntme:

I have tried 2 different carbs, and same fault remains with either carb, so I wouldn't think it was needle jets?

what should I be looking for while cranking:confused:

I reckon timing/leads on in wrong order/out.

If not maybe compression related :(

would it still start if the leads were in wrong order? when it does start it sounds ok

I have checked leads were in right order, but I suppose I could have put dizzy cap back on wrong way round at some point after that

Dave Reed

ye you could still start it, would be a little rough when running though. If I remember correctly you can't put the cap on the wrong way round.

Firing order 1342 if I remember correctly :D:scratch:

Swap the tdc wires and re-try!

Swap the tdc wires and re-try!

That won't do much, it'll just give it +6 degree ignition (old bbpt trick)

have you had the dizzy out at all? perhaps its a tooth out and giving crap spark?
You wouldnt really hear an air leak on the manifold. Easy way to check servo leak is to put mole grips on the two pipes at the base of the carb where the one way valves are.

Bingo.

no, not actually had dizzy out, only cap off when I changed it and rotor,

sorry you have still lost me at servo pipe:ashamed: do you mean the pipe that goes back to turbo elbow?

the only one way valve I have is the one you can see to right of carb on the pics

The one way valve screws into the back of the inlet mani has a hose coming off it to the brake servo.remove and check that it still works.

Tony Walker
28-05-2013, 08:30
two big brass one way valves at the back of carb, below throttle linkage. one pipe goes to breather i think and the other goes to the brake servo(big round thing where all your brake pipes connect to the master cylinder.

if its not going by national day... get it towed there and we'll have a competition to get it going :D

:laugh: might just do that!!!! £50 to the man who can start it!!!:laugh::laugh:

right I will go and check, but I know the pipe from brake servo isn't connected to anything, I presumed that was just a breather pipe:ashamed:

If the servo pipe isnt connected then you will have a badass airleak lol

:crush::crush:Tony Walker......your my hero!!!!:crush::crush:

just checked the one way vales on back of carb and found theres only one fitted!!
stuck a bolt in the other hole, turned it over, and she fired up and purred like a kitten!:D

Thanks for all your replys, I knew it would be something simples ihad missed, and to think I very nearly stuck it all up in classified this weekend I was that p*ssed off with it:laugh:

might even make it to ND minus the trailer now!!

:D great stuff, No problem mate, i would connect a pipe to your servo tho :agree:

il second that i had a universal 1 way valve in the wrong way and had next to no brakes, servo makes one hell of a difference;)

will be doing that, got a few spare carbs knocking about so will take a valve off one and connect it back up:agree:

lol was gonna say that :agree: altho technically it was to the man who starts it... and i think that was probably his own doing.

yea £50 goes to the man who started it, ie me!

I do owe you a beer or 2 at ND tho!
