View Full Version : J5221 Freshen up
Hi guys, recently I did a head gasket change on my 5, all went well its allowed me enough time to set up the fuelling an boost I preferred before giving up again.
It failed whilst I was driving to work (30mph) just started smoking and then misfiring. I left it a couple of weeks and spent this past week looking at projects on here to give me motivation to crack on with mine.
Well today I started, ill let the photos do the rest.
Here's one from when I finished last hg change -

Head of to discover this.. Can anyone explain what causes this? Last hg change I noticed a slight bit of this "pittin" on the head but thought I'd risk it, which ending up biting me in the ass..

http://i339.photobucket.com/albums/n465/kialstopher/null_zps678f0134.jpg
Also noticed a slight bit on the piston. Can Someone give me advise on what to do with this ? Replace or will it be ok?
http://i339.photobucket.com/albums/n465/kialstopher/null_zps400bcf9f.jpg
Then gave the block a degrease and a deep steam to get rid of the **** and ready for some paint :cooter:
http://i339.photobucket.com/albums/n465/kialstopher/null_zps00fe3e4b.jpg
Then gave the engine bay steam clean also, so can start work on rust in the bay and also replace steering gaitor and cv boots.

That was enough work for today. Car pushed back inside and left till Monday now :-)
Any advice or helpful comments more than welcome. I've never done this kind of work before today was the first time i had removed a engine, so anything constructive would be appreciated.
Would also like to thank Mark Butterworth, Steve light and Mark Galvin on the advise given to help me on understanding so far. You've been great help and a credit to this site
Thanks
Ps is post better bloody work on the time it's take me!
looks like youve had some serious det in the past that head looks fecked mate

What causes this?
Haven't messed with ignition timing only just done my fuelling and used a wideband and the fuelling never dropped below 11.3 on wot?

thats good mate but it must of been there before hg change or something that heads deffo fecked mate or somethings got in cylinder somehow
Looks like its been detting heavily at some point. The head needs a face to be used agsin, might be a new head if loads needs skimming off.
Also I forgot to mention, there's a drought of super unleaded over here so I have been using 95 which Steve just me could have set it off..

What are original measurements on a head mate ? I measured mine up an it was around 73.5ish mm I don't really want to be skimming in case it's already been done in the past? Aliso I personally think the det has gone to deep into the head for skimming
You could get away with it at 73mm, standard is 73.5mm. If you skim it any more you could open up the squish area. If you dont want to skim its new head time matey
Cool bud. Most likely going to get a head mate, what about the piston? Will I get away withit or need renewing also?
The det marks in piston arent ideal but you will get away with it mate :agree:

Completely forgot u mentioned that! That's probably a likely cause by itself

Hopefully that's the cause, will be gutted if I get the same issue on a new head :scared:

If you can't get super unnleadded where you are and still want to whack a fair bit of boost through it I would make the tdc adjustable and retard the timing a bit.
Put the tdc bracket in a vice very gently clamped on the metal bit and tap the metal bracket so it moves the plastic sensor and take it off, clean all little broken bits of plastic out and slide sensor back on the bracket. The sensor should still be tight on the bracket but now you can tap the sensor toward the front of the engine to retard the ignition timing.

Fantastic work, is that your trade? I've just done the same thing on the bumper although I have a centre exit so was able to pinch the moulding from there to cover the oe exhaust space. Keep the updates coming.
Thanks for all your nice comments

Really good work mate. Its best IMO to put engine in with gearbox attached I have done it both ways and I painted my bay and had to do it again when I changed gearbox due to scratching it engine craneing the whole lot in together is much more controled and saves the back:)

Hello guys small update.
New rad come down today.
http://i339.photobucket.com/albums/n465/kialstopher/null_zpse1c75b7f.jpg
It's quite well made, and fits well. Other than not being polished very well, and polish being left on it its all good :p
Although this is just basic engine work that I've been doing its a learning curve I've enjoyed. been toying with the idea of f7p turbo for a while and I feel confident enough to take it on and give it a go.
So today I've been given a lump which has had new crank fitted 3 years ago and not moved since. My plan is to finish this c1j get it running well at a reliable 16 psi.then start this new one ..

Thanks guys. Also if anyone has any advise to do with the f7p conversion please fire away ears are open and ready to take it in!

I know what you mean mate, mine is off the road at the moment because of Sills, but I have the added logistic problem of getting the parts to Australia!
I'm about to "post" a whole Renault 21 Quadra to Australia :)
New poster! (less than 10 posts)
Very smart!
:worship: That colour and finish is fantastic :niceone:
Looks great
wheels and colours work nicely
That looks lovely mate, as already said the bodywork and wheel colour combo looks really well :agree:
Thanks a lot guys appreciate it.
Turbo went on the weekend unfortunately. Shaft is as loose as your local lass. Thinking about leaving it for now untill I sort the f7p lump, pointless buying two turbos :-/
Some parts for the f7p

Looking good.nice to see something a bit different. Did you paint the car with the body kit on?
Looking good.nice to see something a bit different. Did you paint the car with the body kit on?
Yes wasn't tight up againsed the body, so there was Enough room to get paint down. The reason for this is simple, want the paint to be even and not look out of place when in the sun. Also didn't want to risk different colour body kit lol

Yeah. Thought the paint might bounce of the kit or be thick above the arches. Looks like it turned out well.:agree:
This may be really stupid of me, as I know nothing about painting. Could you give the car 2 coats lol, one with bumpers and kit off and another with kit on??

youd be left with a stitch where the archers go matey. ive got bits behind the arches where its not a great paint job but ive masked them up and gone over with some black. same under the bumpers too where u couldnt get the gun. minor thing but blacks good enough for me:cooter:

looks good, not sure on colour though... still undecided whether orange works on a GTT with grey wheels....
Not been on here in a while, not much has happend on the 5 front for me other than endless messing about trying to get it to run right. Find myself constantly learning by mistakes (expensive mistakes)
Anyways I've bit the bullet and have agreed to buy a f7rt engine from a known member. Hoping progress will start in the next month will keep this thread updated 👍
I'm containing my excitement
