But, after visiting Mike @GT Spares looking for a solid shell, he came rolling up in this:

I was told that this project 5 has a lot of history on here with forum members Scoff & Chris (?). I really liked what I saw. A rock solid shell with some great ideas behind the spec. :agree:

Any other info regarding this car would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking forward to putting my own spin on it.

Cheers.

Last owner from here was Haz I believe.

I personally like the rear mounted radiator. Plenty more space upfront :agree:

Thanks for the info guys... and for having me back with open arms. :D

Last I heard from Mike is that the K-tec carb is no good so a new one is being built, before he lets me get my hands on it.

I'll have to give my word to Haz that she's in good hands. ;)

Think I've found the new colour I've been looking for. . .

Spandex are offering new metallic matte finish wrapping vinyls. A friend of mine finished wrapping this Focus last week.

Quick update:

Picked the car up off Mike on Wednesday night and I have to say... I'M IN LOVE. It's like revisiting an old one night stand whilst on Viagra. :D The car's set up is very different to my last 5. Initially I had plans to add some comfort to the interior etc, but I've really grown to appreciate the nature of Haz's set up.

I think the next couple of steps forward will be:

Full body wrap.
New wheels
Alarm/Immobiliser

After these are done, I may look at increasing the performance, but if I'm honest, it's lively enough for me at the moment. :)

That looks great.

How do you look after the bodywork of a car that has been vinyl wrapped? What I mean is, do you use normal products to wash/polish/wax them?

Also, I'm interested to know what happens if you have a bit of undetected corrosion underneath? Does it bubble up underneath the vinyl? Or is it that there is no oxygen so no therefore no rusting?

Lastly, does wrapping cover up minor imperfections in the bodywork?

Thanks buddy.

I've let cars go in the past (reluctantly) and have seen them in some awful states after. The worst case was with my Supra. It was immaculate when I sold it. I used to clean it almost daily. The last time I saw it, the front bumper had been smashed to pieces with one of the spot lights was hanging on by the wires. The guy I sold it to, couldn't reverse it off my driveway and hit the lamppost. :sad2: It was gutting to say the least!

Hopefully Haz will like some of the changes. Whatever the case, she'll be looked after. :agree:

Yep, normal products. Wash/wax/gentle polish/ - vinyl comes up lovely. I would be confident enough to go through a car wash after a couple of weeks of application. :)

Also, I'm interested to know what happens if you have a bit of undetected corrosion underneath? Does it bubble up underneath the vinyl? Or is it that there is no oxygen so no therefore no rusting?Honestly? I don't know. I don't think vinyl would protect against undetected expanding rust as the chemical process has already started from within. It definitely adds an additional protective layer so stone chips, etc won't get through to the bare metal.

When it comes to protection, Ventureshield is awesome stuff. If I go down the paint route instead of vinyl, I will definitely ventureshield the front end.

Lastly, does wrapping cover up minor imperfections in the bodywork?I would say that anything that has gone below the paint would show up. Minor scratches etc, should be ok.

Went out for a spin this evening and noticed a slight misfire in 4th. At one point it hesitated quite badly so I called time and took a slow cruise home. I've got a feeling its a boost leak, but to be sure I am going to tap up Scoff for a wideband kit. Need one anyway so I'm gona prioritise it over styling.

Big Supes

Well, that was handy. Went to visit the ole' dot and had a rummage through the garage and found a set of uprated engine mounts, some samco hoses, spider valve for adjustable boost, 5 Haynes manual, GTT engine loom, and a gas flowed exhaust mani with a working T2.

Was only thinking today that some uprated engine mounts wouldn't go a miss. :)

Also found my old KTR 'stage 3' cylinder head, but its corroded quite badly...

Just changed the engine mounts and the gear changes are a lot smoother. Think the last set had taken a beating. :D

Well, it's also been a while since I've broken down in a 5 and today was my day. :D

I think the relay that controls the fuel pump has gone. There has been intermittent fuelling issues with symptoms similar to that of a boost leak. Checked over all the vac pipes around the carb, checked over the boost pipes - all ok. Every now and then, it would hold back though and today it cut out completely and wouldn't start. I actually came over with a sigh of relief as I knew whatever was causing the issue has decided to own up and die.

Checked the ignition leads, all hoses again. No problems. Turned the ignition on to check the fuel pump - nothing. The only thing I noticed was a thudding sound every time I put the ignition on. The noise is coming from a relay that has been relocated next to the battery in the back of the car.

Any thoughts, peeps? I'd like to say it's a dud relay, but wouldn't mind hearing what others think just in case...

Cheers.

She's alive after changing the fuel pump. :) I'm pretty sure the clutch needs changing so I'm thinking about sending the gear box off for a service as the synchro chirps going into 3rd a little too often. Any recommendations?

Whilst that's being done, I'll get a wideband sensor kit wired in. Getting some strange misfires so it needs to go on before something goes bang.

Ahhhhh, I've missed playing with 5's. :D

Toned down the rear end a little today. Managed to get a pretty decent colour match on the grey so wrapped the bottom of the tail gate and the panels above the rear lights.

Left the key lock orange and the recesses were the number plate lights sit.

The ole campus has been keeping me busy (wouldn't have it any other way :D)

After replacing the fuel pump, the AEI bit the bullet and now that's sorted, it appears the water pump has taken a ****. I'm just glad both went before this Sunday (retro show).

Will hopefully be able to tap Mike up for a new pump tomorrow so she'll be ready in time.

I've kinda decided to keep the orange and grey - its really grown on me. Thinking of painting the car and maybe tweaking the colours to metallic instead. I'll post a pic I did on photoshop in a bit...

Defo still saving for a new set of wheels still.

Me and tnt!hammond were going to buy this from haz in its original spec, Ross wanted the engine and I wanted the shell. Figures didn't stack up in the end and still a little gutted about it tbh but it's nice to see you doing something with it.

Paint scheme is a little marmite, but it does grow on you, will be following your progress :agree:

Although it would have been a real shame to see this car dismantled, I don't blame you guys for wanting to do down that route. The engine is pretty solid (touch wood) and the shell is top notch.....

It's sad to say she won't be attending the Retro show tomorrow. :( I've been out there trying to bleed the water system, but no joy. Thermostat is fine and I can blow water through the system and out of the bleed nipples.

Oh well, at least she's had another wax & clean. Will try and make the club day, whenever that is.

Quick update: Johnny 5 is A-L-I-V-E!

Water pump was fooked. Went to take it off and three bolts sheered off. Managed to wind out two, but the last one snapped (again) and was flush with the head. :sad2: After running out of ideas I bit the bullet, got an angle drill and got to work. Not ideal, but luckily it paid off. Got a decent pilot hole, then worked up to 5mm and she tapped out nicely. :)

She was a complete bitch to bleed (water system), but got there in the end. She's running really well at the moment.
