All,
My manager just shouted over to me regarding an article he has just read...

http://www.confused.com/car-insurance/articles/why-new-mot-rules-mean-cars-vehicles-more-likely-to-fail

This is aimed at new cars with technology but may affect us also. We may need to look at a bulk buy for "speedo kits" and I dont mean for swimming!!!

Yep, I was going to say the same as they use on bicycles but they have them for cars now. BigDan has one fitted to "scraps", you can also get digital ones.

Just done a quick search, they are around £70/80!!! I was thinking about £15/20

***Did you know, it is iillegal not to have a working speedomewter?***

GPS can be slow, ie, you brake for the camera and it shows the same speed.

The above company said their DS100 GPS speedo polls at 10 time a second and is therefore fast enough. Sat Navs, etc, are too slow.

That's bad news for me. My Fiat hasn't had a working speedo for years as the cost of repair is possibly more than the value of the car.

Problem with a GPS speedo is they can't test it on the brakes test rollers .

It shows the speed the car is moving, not speed of turning wheels.

They'd have to drive the car on the street to see it working.

I wonder how they plan on testing speedometers?

Do they just mean working in general or working in a tollerence to the actual speed? All Speedos in modern cars show that your going faster than you actually are anyway so I don't see the point. Just get friendly with your tester and he will put it through:cooter:

I wonder how many GTT speedos actually work? I must admit I didn't know it was illegal to drive with a faulty speedo.

I'm soon to be a tester myself and when these and other checks come into force we will be doing a short test drive to check the speedo is operational, if its not then yes it will be a fail.

I don't care who's testing my car they won't drive it I don't mind taking it for a drive to show someone it works but won't let anyone else drive it :) it's lucky the local Renault garage is 100 yards from my house and I know the owner. I always help the tester check the lights and sit in the car and do the brakes on the brake roller so hopefully they would take my word for it that it works :)

Found another: http://www.speedhut.com/gauge/GR338-GPS-01/1/GPS-Speedometer-Gauge-120mph

About £205 inc UK taxes plus shipping from the USA.

Nice, but only polls 5 times a second, so too slow really for late braking before cameras.

The DS100 and DS200 poll 10 time a second, so might be OK.
