My journey with F789 NLB.......aka Bricktop.

In December 2011 I started looking out for a good bodied phase 2 gt turbo, in January I found one with no rust, good body and pokey lump......

Bodywork was mint as it has has a full respray with all new panels, seals and rubbers, the engine didn't miss a beat at 12psi with a t25 felt good so I decided to buy at 2.5k with a set of refurbed speedlines thrown in.

Got the car home with no problems until I opened the header tank and found this:

http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r600/RedOctober5/IMG_0407-1.jpg

A quick call to Justin from ep who lives down the road and the head gasket was swapped and few other bits were tidied up.........

http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r600/RedOctober5/KGrHqZHJCE8fiKjimjBPNm3ZSlC60_121.jpg

Had a relatively problem free summer until the Wednesday before national day when the car went in to have some custom decals put on:

And because I was working I dropped the car off at a mates garage for new redstuff pads and hoses. When I picked it up on the Friday I was due to drive ND a young yts scrote was underneath and I could hear a cracking sound coming rom the bay, the car was running and had been a while. Tunrs out the lad had forgot to put any coolant in ffs. After falling out with my mate and giving him a big bag off fcuk all I drove ND carefree a little hotter than usual but still normal.

Put the car on the rollers and she made 170@12psi which was a bonus.

Spent all day on track but the dials kept getting higher and higher each time we went out. Finally on the last set of laps I decided to turn the boost up a lot and then this happened:

and
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmpasxLBQPY long
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwaO3fKXFko short

Got towed back to the campsite and found out underneath the charred remains of a newly powder coated engine bay id split the top rad hose and cooked the head.....
Over the next few hours we raplaced everything and got back running again and managed to get the car home through buxton and Sheffield with no problems and a little boost:)

Little did I know this was the start of the ultimate decline of the engine.......

Car seemed lumpy now didn't use it as much and a little smoke had developed at full boost. Nest the afrs seemed to be swinging to extremes until the car was so lean I daren't run it any longer. id had oil coming from both manifold areas and multiple fires had broken out like the one at ND.

Sent the car down to GT Motorsport in stoke on trent who managed to help blunty achieve his 230bhp and I knew mark at gt is one of only a handful of tuners who had seen 500bhp out of the Subaru small block so it made sense.

http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r600/RedOctober5/010.jpg

Im a big believer in built not bought but when I started the engine rebuild with too many differences and variables I decided to let a ex wrc mechanic have the headache.

Mark took the lump apart:

A quick call to mike at gt turbo spares and id got a full bottom end rebuild kit bearings washers tarabusi pistons liners ect

Purchased a set of piper high lift springs, 285 cam, campus pulley and belt and a mocal 13 row oil cooler and sandwich plate.

Purchased a cossie 2wd fmic and pipework, carb refurb kit and jets, MLS gasket set, new pump, pins, bolts, nuts, washers, jubilee clips, hoses
http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r600/RedOctober5/305546_10151237691784361_514749525_n1.jpg

Now was time for the turbo refurb by Bernie at bernies blowers

T28 with billet comp wheel and wet bearing

Then it was time to get the head sorted:

Reading the thousands of threads I came across marky bs build thread and decided to get the head maxed.

I put larger valves in out of a metro turbo a series, with retainers and collets. The head was extensively ported and polished, throated all on a flowbench at chase engine services who supply heads for the mazda duratec series.

Next I decided to get the nodiz pro ignition controller and do away with the aei and renix dissy setup.

Purchases all sensors cabling from demon tweeks and scoff at efi parts along with a 36-1 trigger wheel that's welded against the campus pulley

http://i1173.photobucket.com/albums/r600/RedOctober5/20130223_115633-Copy.jpg

Have already purchased a 8psi fpr, uprated pump, 3 bar map sensor wasted spark 4 pack with competition leads on iradium plugs.

Cooling wise I managed to pick up this big radiator via james on here and fitted a 16" pacet fan.

Car has also had full interior swap with black and red leather trim. pics to come.

Tubular exhaust manifold, turbo housing and downpipe are being ceramic coated next week next week with pics to follow.

The build is currently underway and should have some more pics and info in the coming week

Cheers Tony I tried my best to put it in order, gutted the links didn't show the pictures. Every time we went out and did another stint the temps and gauges would go up another notch, on the last few I turned it up 20+ and it was fun while it lasted. The powder coat from the fire extinguisher has made a right mess also. Its on trailer this time around thank god so if it blows I can fix it at home.

Cheers for the encouragement lads.

Forgot to add the head is being dismantled to enable the introduction of catcams inner springs and double retainers, to help with the valve float that occurs hopefully around 8 to 8.5krpm to compliment the roller rocker, uprated rods and 285 cam.
Get some legs out of the T28.

Just one thing though.. I'm not sure I would of used the metro turbo valves being as they are a 2 piece valve and tend to break of :crap:

I'm not sure mate, I know the standard ones are.. Worth a phone call though, coz as soon as you rev that thing it'll spit the valve out :(

Been on the phone to mini spares and they reiterated what the head people said is that the valves are mini metro competition valves, not the 2 part ones you mentioned. My bad with the wrong description.

Camcoat mate, 277 delivered including vat. zircotek want 20 working days turnaround and offer 1 45% surcharge if you want it 8-15 working days ffs.

I went for camcoat because of the turnaround time at zircotek and the attitude of the sales woman was gash, when I asked specific info all I got was copy and paste off their website which I could have done myself.

ill bob some pics on soon pal.

Bit of a update...................

Fell out with my engine builder at the end of May as his divorce and extra curricular activities were too much of a burden.

Had the car back and had it transported down to sunny Tipton where Sparkie has kindly offered to build it back up.

He stripped it down completely and uncovered many problems...

sump full of melted stem seals.'
Cam journals fooked, block also worn to the point of rattle (new block required)
oil pump fooked
Carb has a crack bigger than sticky Vicky
0.75 crank had took a whack and was also fooked!

Mark has took many pictures and we've replaced more or less everything for new or reconditioned so despite costing a fortune at least ive got a A1 lump. Fingers crossed it should be running of sorts in the next few weeks, albeit on a base map and a T2 ;)

Pics and update coming soon watch this space............

Had a massive valvetrain catastrophe on idle after startup basically. Dropped many valves its shook itself to pieces. Then next week we shall find out if we are correct in our diagnosis of the susprct areas. Once we have established factual evidence I can go from theres and see what the options are, or break it.

Its completley ruined, 3.5k in the bin.

The following video was taken 1 week after it died catastrophically idling on its mot.

If you watch the video in HD you will see the galleries are full of needle bearings from the rollers as they disinterested at 1200rpm. Due to the disintergration collets were ripped off and valves were dropped. As said before sparkie or a independent garage will strip it under camera to ascertain the full extent of the damage. Ignore the commentary as I was shaking and hadnt actually realised the rollers had come off.

Enjoy, because after 12months of hard slog I definatley aint.

Its not the money ive lost its the time thats done my head in, a full year in the making is time I will never be able to recoup. Im aware this isn't an isolated case so it will be interesting to see how this all pans out with sid. He has been the perfect gentleman so far and if its conclusive that his rockers are to blame then im sure he wont just leave town and run away from this, id be an idiot to think hes just going to hand over a bag of cash based on a load of recipts and what me and sparkie reckon. But somethings gotta be done, like I said before this build disintergrating has blown my mind and disposable income for 2013.

Thanks for all the kind words and encouragement especially the offer of help coming from all angles has been great. See whats what next week and ill get some pictures up.

i had friends in the past that raced minis with A series engines that had roller rockers fitted and these engines revved well with no probs, but they were designed to work on that engine

also they both have push rod engines so not that different

I think these rockers work just that the rollers cant take the hammer, the fact the needle bearings escaped and they fell apart was testament to that. The other dubious thing is when the elongated pushrod needles are installed this massivley changes the angle of the ratio which may also have a bearing on what happened tuther end.

Obviously everyone knows there has been some issues with my build due to unforeseen problems........

here's some more pics of the 1st engine restoration(before the roller rocker problems)

Decided for optimum track and heavy boosting cooling the c1j would be high on the agenda of the build........fitting of the clio 172 radiator is tough as it requires chopping the engine mount slightly. It fits butt up against the front of the engine bay and with the 16 inch pacet fan it snug to say the least but sparkie is the man!

Now being a bit of an oddball that doesn't really follow the crowd I decided to get a FMIC with the PWR as to cover all the angles, im aware of carb freeze etc but the CC will be on a switch and a piece of cardboard always solves the trick........

I spoke to forge about a bespoke FMIC that would allow me to keep the oe look without chopping up the front and it had to fit behind the grille not lower down (orthodox FMIC position) as that would where the 2x 450mm CC rads would sit. Forge were useless and I decided to get a decent one off ebay that has again different style of fin.

Just some updates on the car if anyone's bothered.

A little swarf/needle bearings caught in the turbo oil filter.

Everything was re-taken apart by Sparkie, jet washed, degreased and cleaned to make sure none of the disintegrated roller rockers parts remained.

Its ready to go back in, running on a t2 for at least 1000 miles for the run in.

Once its run in I hope for the car to go to EFI parts for the rest of the nodiz to be installed and mapped, in addition the T28 (pics in earlier part of the thread) will be fitted and fuelled.

Jobs left to do are:

Big brake conversion R21 (calliper's need grinding down to fit).
calliper's need painting.
Nodiz fitting and setup.
Decent twin pump bracket for the charge cooler pumps need fabricating.
Finish fabricating a custom scuttle panel.
Give the new leather interior a good treatment.
Remove the dash/full interior plastics for flocking locally.
Re-spray of a brand new OE bonnet from Renault, wings, bumper and grille including a few odd spots on the inner sills due to scuffing from a low hanging door issue.

Installation of the ICE system.

Have bought a very good condition parcel shelf and installed 2x Vibe 6x9s 360W
1x1000W Vibe amplifier
1x10" Vibe subwoofer 800W
Alpine CDA 9855R head unit
Alpine KCA 420i iPhone interface adapter and cradle
Alpine 65mm 125W coaxial's in the front doors.

Hopefully all complete by March 30th ready for summer..... :p :smokin:

Sometimes I come across maybe a bit wrong, im not after sympathy of more comments but sometimes it seems like there's no point in updating the resto as its something that's been done to death! Either that or I am perceived at a tw&t haha.

Thanks for the positivity guys I feel a bit better now, you've all got a can waiting for ya at some shows this year! :):agree:

Like a nodder splitting before the event I was a lucky boy, no kittens.

Even a novice could tell the engine sound was appalling, good mot man switched it off before it got worse.

If the head was damaged I would have gone f7, I couldnt cope with going through that again. The mathematics alone with the springs was honours degree level ffs.

Sparkie used a magnifying glass and the intuition of sherlock homes to find this final needle bearing, magnet sounds like a good idea davo after all we've been through to be fair. Id prefer another warranty from Sid in reality :)

Can't see that happening mate. From what I've been told you're in safe hands with Sparkie.

Definitely agree with Matt too. Pop down Maplins and buy a blowtorch soldering iron and shrink wrap and get rid of them crimp connectors & choccy blocks. They have no place in an engine bay :)

I've soldered every connection on my loom pretty much.

Took the bumper off to replace some wiring and for a general electrical tidy up. Swapped the fan switch, sump plug and a general service after running the fresh engine in to 450 miles.

Swapped and re routed the hoses for the chargecooler in red to match the rest, built a decent black bracket and clamps for the 2x bosch pumps also. Re wired the fan override and chargecooler system adding new cockpit switches.

Ive been driving round with it off to be honest because I was getting carb freeze (I was doing long distances on motorway and dual carriageways for the run in) sat at 70mph in 5th off boost!

Tyres definitely put the willies in ANY car I've rolled up against at the lights, they look at the tyres then look at you and look forward.......... almost like they want you to burn off so they can watch! I've noticed when you put Meguiars hot shine tyre spray on it penetrates the paint and starts to slowly erode it  Bit of a double edge sword im afraid, either cool tyre art or shiny tyres you cant have both :crap:

Bad day at the mappers, took old trigger bracket off that was welded to the timing cover and the weld had decided to make its join stronger and when it was worked off it left a hole. Then took off the cover to find vernier damage to the cover in the shape of a circular groove it had cut in so the lid was toast anyway.

And the circular bearing thingy that goes between the pulley and the crank which the pulley bolt goes through had a hairline crack in it spotted by mike dulforce!!! Which was causing the seal to weep oil slightly.

All in all a day that should have been a mapped success turned into taking the c1j apart exercise AGAIN!
its a good job its easy to take apart!

You have a point there, sometimes if you don't actually use it and enjoy it for a while motivation can evaporate into thin air.

I used mine a little yesterday, only about 20 miles or so but when i walked out from the supermarket and it was parked amongst all the non discript boaring modern motors and all the thumbs up you get ECT plus giving it some lead foot and i was smiling like a Cheshire cat afterwards. :D

And all the pissing about was worth it.

I've had to have a time out with it till Monday anyway as Mike cant get me the parts until Saturday then its down to royal fail.

Fancied a day off it watching virgin media and eating crap instead haha.

Ill start again Monday and refit the cover, put the EFI parts bracket back on and finish dressing the loom. I think ill have to get a scuttle cover as its a bit of a mess in there with the wires!

Once its all done and the base map gets it idling we can have a play with the launch control and hard cut limiter.

One phone call to mike at gt turbo spares and a new cover and cork gasket, all glued up with 600c silicone.

Next we wired the Nodiz pro MK1 up. This consisted of.........

1x nodiz pro
1x ford wasted spark coil pack
4x leads
1x 3 bar MAP sensor
1x exhaust temp sensor
1x coolant temp sensor
1mm wire various colours
EFI parts crank sensor and bracket
36-1 trigger wheel which was already fitted
1x IP65 waterproof adaptable box
various stuffing glands

Well, we tried and tried to get it to work and after 10 hours of messing with the software and difficulty timing it the thing still wouldn't work. We tried different earthing points and moved the coil and it worked, but with a borrowed base map we didn't want to push the envelope.

ALL this took 6 MONTHS!!!! one because im lazy and 2 because my mate the tuner did this as a favour, also the garage is toasty warm shelter for the 5.

Mark at GT Motorsport finally got it mapped to a decent standard with no idea of figures but no det and no leaning out.

During this time I could not resist revving to 8k and having a blitz, which resulted in my very first bent rod arhhhhhhhhhh!

I also decided to remove the shoddy wiring and connectors, I used a soldering iron to do a proper job. Also I used silicone pipe from ECU box to plug connector to ensure no ingress or mechanical damage, when the tubes came through the bulkhead I used stuffing glands instead of grommet holes to prevent fumes entering the bulkhead.

At EFI I asked if the car could be ran up on its initial setting out of curiosity....

It was 159bhp@9 psi with a Major boost leak at the bleed valve.

Scoff drilled a restrictor and placed it in the vac hose between the carb lobster and bleed valve that runs to the actuator.

Scoff has said that with an extra injector at the carb activated by a solenoid is the next step in the tune as the carb is emptying in 4th and 5th gears. The nodiz pro has output features to allow a solenoid to be activated by it wherever on the map which again gives me the bonus of fine tuning a carb. The FPR is set at 7psi and I have a uprated pump so fuelling shouldn't be an issue.

So for now a visit is planned for next year with the extra injector which is a small job, and looking at the curves I certainly think 240 isn't far away with the extra fuel.

The car is set to have a new bonnet fitted and a complete front end and wings re-spray as well as the GT turbo badge on the rear getting a red and black re paint.

I really like this build. Did you data log the inlet temps at different boosts? Would be interesting to know what they were if you've got them? :agree:

The sensors I've got are just bosch standards and do not read real time, I can only see max tempts on the logger. Hopefully on a track day or dyno this year I can bring the laptop and read the live mode and see what's going on.

When the car is up to temp and is being driven hard the needle doesn't move from its perfect position in between the 2nd and 3rd bars on the engine coolant temp WHEN the chargecooler is switched on the engine coolant needle drops onto the 2nd bar exactly. This leads me to believe the CC cools the engine by 15% so we must be talking super cool exhaust gas temperatures.

Cheers Phil. It was a struggle like yours, perhaps we should have self help books out by now based on our experiences haha.

I've been down my friends body shop today and was blown off my feet at how many cars were booked in because of bumps over the xmas and new year period.

The car is booked in next Friday to have the front and rear bumpers repaired and painted, the grill repaired and painted, brand new primed OE bumper painted, both wings, and various scratches around the car sorted.

The body shop lads will level up and make the front end look like new symmetry wise.

The tax runs out at the end of the month and the car will be squirreled away until March/April once yhe bodywork is sorted ready for the 2015 season so to speak.

What's your thoughts on the extra fueling ? You going for the banjo method?

Don't think so mate, I really like the way the chap did his (the picture of the one from the old RTOC website) where he had drilled the carb bowl and used a nitrous fueling solenoid.

Adam Ford on the FB page mentioned feeding the carb bowl from underneath through a hole where you put the screwdriver to remove the main jet. I need to understand the carburettor first before I decide.

There are 3 ways. Banjo, underside fed (as explained ⬆) and drilling the bowl as the old rtoc page shows.

Friends on FB have sent me pictures of EP motorsport method of drilling the very top of the inlet manifold just underneath the diamond shaped mount that the carb sits on. There is a cylindrical part between the diamond and the inlet manifold itself, 2 cm above the start of the branch. Drill it, thread it and put a standard bosch injector in using a pressure switch etc to activate it.

You won't have to drill the carb bowl. The banjo would screw into the drain plug on the front, same as in the pic I showed you.

The old DD Autosports car had two yellow injectors via bosses into the back of the inlet manifold. This directed fuel straight into the ports. Crude but worked. Send ashy a PM. He might have a pic of it.:agree:
