Took my 5 on Wednesday to the main man. To finally turn my boost up and check for det. Do any last additions to fueling. So the engine was making very healthy power. We got it upto 21+ psi and the turbo let go. Absolutely gutted. But at least i know the engine has the capabilitys of 220-230 horses easily. Thanks to Chris/scoff. Wasted a few hours of his time in the end. Oh well onwards and upwards!

 that's the sort of luck I have, your lucky you live close enough to use the main man's expertise. Where you having the turbo rebuilt at?

I was about to say we need some more info,

Basically the lump is a bb tuning yellow spec motor, lots and lots of headwork, 285 112 degree cam, low comp pistons with a lightened and balanced bottom end, crank/flywheel balance, caps all matched weight wise I expect. T25 tomcat turbo.

changes we made were a shorter head 72.4 mm iirc also some of the squish area removed, rebuilt turbo, adjustable fpr 6psi base pressure, and a large frontmount cooler.

it made 208 hp and 200ft/lb's with some decent boost at just 5500 rpm, this engine breaths amazingly well and keeps on making power upto and beyond 7k. We compared the runs to the last time it was there at the rtoc rr day, and it made a lot more tourq than before and of course more power, was a real shame the turbo let up, a lot of time effort and money went into it, still all being well we should get the numbers we are after once the blowers sorted:D

I better pull my finger out and sort mine out, can't have my little bro making more power with his c1j than me...........:cooter:

bad news abut the turbo going, but sounds like a very powerful car. I need to go to see scoff sometime soon myself. I was content with 120bhp but....after being royally embarrassed by my friend in his new audi I need more power.

Are you on the b18?? That's an engine way capable of 200 BHP. Infanct it will piss that power...

Yup mines a b18ft but my mates audi is a new s8. V8 turbo. 500+ bhp. Its unreal how fast it is for such a heavy car. Do you come down these sides often to see your brv. We could do a meet round here.

To be honest we don't know, the head has 1.1mm off compared to standard its had most of the chamfered bit in the squish area removed and it runs dished pistons, we never measured or calculated anything, just told the engineer it was suppost to be 73.5 thick and could he take out some to get close to that.

The main reason it makes more tourq is because the old comp wheel was screwed due to whoever built the turbo before leaving a load of glass matter behind the tomact bov blanking plate, it looked like a nut had been in there whilst it was spnning at 200000 rpm:eek:

You have no luck. Bin the tomcat, they are commonly known for being unreliable at higher boost. Suppose 360 bearing would help, is it a free rebuild? There's a few similar sized ones with good results.

Dog**** Haz I know mate, need to get myself a bigger blower. Or a better t25. But it's all money. I would imagine it will be a free rebuild.

Yeah go down to my brothers a lot. Not all the time in the 5 though. It's usually broken. Hahaha.

If they offer a free rebuild, see what they're offering, upgrade n pay extra for a360 bearing if not already fitted, can't be any more than £50 extra.
