View Full Version : Would love to see some Renault power in drift

As some of you may knowni took the plunge in buying a nissan drift car which is great fun, now at drift events I've seen just about every model of car there, but no renaults ever, it's a massive void that needs filling by any rtocer, what about a 21turbo quarto modified or even a rwd Renault 5,' lots of people use the volvos with the f7p block however these are always considered a basic low power car as people leave them stock, never seen a boosted one on the drift circuit, certainly turn some heads I think. Be really cool to see something new and fresh, I know renaults exel at more general circuit racing but it's just a though to try something new.

Nothing would make me feel better than seeing a 100percent non Jdm home brew Renault ripping up the Tarmac. When you consider most drift cars are typically bolt on spec mods, and s14s on average sit at around 280bhp it wouldn't be difficult to make a French tin can have comparable power.

getting a renault engine to make power isn't the hardest part, trying to have it make those power reliable is a whole different story!

drifting with a rwd rear engined short wheel based car would only result in 180's/360's.

it isn't as suprisingly you won't see renaults as they are not rwd. atleast the majority of them....

Plenty of early starlets ( I know there rwd) mk1'fiestas and the like cropping up though, I always presumed as much with a short wheel base but a early start with a cosworth engine is smashing lots of events,'I imagine the setup is just much crucial. Just my chain of thoughts on an early morning,'random blurb :)

The main problem is no cheap rwd renaults are available. Alpine gta, r5t2, clio v6 are all big money, nobody would risk smashing one up & parts are mega expensive. 21t quadras are as rare as rocking horse ****e. This is why everybody goes for 200sx or similar jap rwd as parts are available and cheap to tune?

From what i read the transmission is pretty weak so any more power than a bog standard f7p/r and your asking for trouble?

Brigsy are you on about the Volvo 340 rear mounted gearbox being weak? Even the 1.7 version? If so that's a shame as I had a plan:D

Is the starlet a yellow kp62 with escort running gear and a n/a carbed yb lump?

My mates 340 dealt with 200bhp+ happly enough the main issue was getting a clutch to fit as I remember they kept on slipping. :crap:

Jon is right there's no affordable Renault option for drifting.

Gary maybe we should implant the idea of turning up to drift what you brung into James's head. ;)

Poor old James

Pretty sure my mate had to cut the throttle body off and weled it on the other side and also something similar to the exhaust manifold to fit the b18ft inthe 340.

James was lucky to limp away, it's lucky we can even take the pi55 out of him.. There's a whole thread for mocking him, it's called his project thread..

:agree::laugh:

I was lucky and I don't mind the abuse reminds me not to drive like a dick:D some rwd drift sounds fun in a controlled and dedicated area not sure how good a rwd 5 would be at drifting going around in circles is prob more like it:laugh:

Yep from what i read they arent the best...the 360 stuff is better but not sure if that would work?

I recall seeing a c1j converted one on retro rides, ill try and find the link later. Clutch a problem too

According to scoff it was a handfull in a straight line with just a 230hp c1j, do you know if there is much weight difference between a c1j and the vag lump?

I can pick up a c1j if I awaken the hulk inside of me but a clio 1.8 16v was a struggle with 2.. I'm pretty sure the vag lumps twice as heavy as the c1j if not a touch more..

Agree i think a five is too small to be a good drift car. I had a nice E34 M5 now that was effortless. 3.8 340bhp rwd.

So considerably more weight over the rear wheels and I'm guessing the front end will be very light.........so that coupled with the short wheel base most definitely means circles as opposed to drifts:laugh: opposite lock will soon have you facing the opposite direction:wasntme:

I suppose it wasn't purchased for drifting, traction off the line should be quite fun however;)

Maybe wih a rwd 5. You should weigh all corners and add weight to the front to compensate.
