Ok so iv rebuilt a engine over christmas new liners rings crank reground etc..

Put it back in the car and just wont start, got spark, got fuel, checked timing dizzy gear alignment at tdc, tried everything i can think of just nothing starting to puzzle me

any ideas??

Which side of the engine are you thinking is number 1 also when you put gear in for dizzy it rolls around is it stopping in the correct postion

Iv gone off things iv read and been told tried both being flywheel end 1 and waterpump being 1..

Tried dizzy pointer facing front of car towards rad and slightly to the left,

Leads going 1-3-4-2 starting at bottom one

Dunno what it can be ?

Check that the spark plugs havent been fouled and got wet?

I had this problem, kept trying to turn the engine over and was flooding it without realising!

Number 1 is flywheel end have you got a haynes manual

Rotate the dizzy 180 degrees.

w35ty
11-03-2013, 22:27
Yeah got haynes, il check plugs and iv tried turning the dizzy 180 deg even tried the swap plugs way.. Nothing

Could it be anything to do with cam? but all iv done is marked my vernier and crank when pistons 1-4 were at tdc removed then done work and put back in lining the markings up so dont think it could be wrong

Just thinking im gonna check that both valves are closed on no.1 when at tdc and flywheel marking is lined up and check dizzy gear is in right place then?

When I put mine back togeather I was adamant that it wasn't 180 out, but it was... Just swap the leads about and crank haha. What's the worst that can happen...

Pops and bangs a lot when trying to start.

Is it even trying to start? or just turning engine over without any sorting of attempt?

Tried it all ways with leads and the dizzy gear im sure its right.. Aint even popin or banging thats what i mean  blagging me thats why im thinking cam out or? I need to check that valves are both closed at compression when at tdc

12-03-2013, 15:13
yeah its turning over nicely 2bf got fuel going to carb and when take plug out can smell fuel jus plugs aint soaked? Got spark aswell... It dont feel like its sucking loads through carb top compared to before

Did you use new gaskets between the carb and inlet manifold?? Its Possible for it to leak there quite easily

car.crash
12-03-2013, 16:17
Take the main fuel line off the carb and crank it over to make sure fuels being pumped through.

w35ty
12-03-2013, 19:03
Yeh i used new gaskets il check to feel for any leaks there dont think it is though

And iv took fuel line off plenty pissing out there

When you say your getting a spark do you mean out the king lead mate ?

w35ty
12-03-2013, 20:45
Aint done compression test yet gonna do one the weekend beat be good though as put new liners and rings in..

And im getting spark with the plug in too when took out.. dunno if its the beat though really.. Plugs have only done about 200miles though

Ok mate so have you managed to see a spark from the spark plug itself when taken out the head whilst cranking with a lead still on ?

take plug out of no1 cylinder turn engine till you feel the compressed air coming out of the plug hole get it to tdc on that cylinder then make sure that the distributor is then pointing to the lead that goes to that cylinder then carry on the 1342 rule after that. should fire if compression is good if not then pull king lead off slightly from dizzy this enhances the spark and makes them fire when flooded.

compression tests needed after this if you have fuel and spark.

w35ty
12-03-2013, 22:03
Yeah mate done that and got a spark just dunno what it could be tried everthing i cam or im just missing something and being purely thick:scratch:

anybody near who could pop down weekend and see if they know whats up with it?

Sounds daft but I had a problem similar where mine would just turn and not fire up.
Ended up being the little lever thing at the bottom corner of the carb. (Front right bottom when looking from passenger wing).
I greased this up a little and started first time.
Probably not your problem but this was suggested when mine wouldn't fire up

Cam timings out, or tappets are too tight and not closing valves.

w35ty
16-03-2013, 18:12
Rekon? Might be tappets you know seem tight might loosen them and reset them

w35ty
17-03-2013, 19:02
