I've been getting messages from Big Steve and Bigfoot (is that a coincidence? :wasntme:) who were both after original towing eye covers... apparently they're hard to get or order in the UK?
Anyway... it's no problem at all over here, so if anyone else wants one... gimme a shout and I'll order it for you. They're €10,55 and P&P will be about €1,50 or so... :agree:

These used to be available from CGB for about £5 plus postage so am guessing he's all out then. They do indeed come unpainted etc. Which was great for me since it went straight on the Ph1 :D although far too light a colour, which is weird.

Scoff
26-12-2008, 12:42
Ah, the phase 2 bumpers are a light version of "phase 1" when you buy them new, I guess the towing eye cover would have been destined for a phase 2 but was un-primered.

Trevhib
26-12-2008, 12:54
You'd think so Chris but I bought a brand new Ph2 front bumper for my car from Paul B in 2005 and when it came I was really pleased to see that it was dark. Darker in fact than the rest of my kit (without some trim shine that is). When the towing eye cover arrived subsequently, it was far lighter than the bumper and certainly lighter than the rest of the arch kit. I rubbed something or other into it to bring it into line :)

Btw, you can see in my profile pics how dark the bumper is. I haven't touched it. It just came out of the wrapper and went straight on. I was very pleased indeed for £60.

Trevhib
26-12-2008, 12:58
Actually, in my pics you can see the edges of the tow eye cover where the stuff I rubbed on is coming away at the edges slightly.

26-12-2008, 13:02
Ah thats odd then, the one's I've dealt with have been much lighter than that, positivly grey.

i thought the phase 2 gtt arches and bumpers came semi primed which is why they are lighter in colour than the phase 1 items. i found when i bought all new arches etc.... that i took them out of the packaging and could rub them down straight away due to the coating of primer mixed in with the mould of something when they were made.:)

I work in Injection Moulding & know many toolmakers but i know for a fact that a mold tool to manufacture these & the associated moulding costs would be prohibitive.

Our best bet is to get a towing eye cover off someone then make a vac form mould of it, then just make resin replications of them????

Who's going to offer one up for reproduction.......

There are a fair few options dependant on volume . All is possible and some mould tooling can be done very cheaply ,but you're still talking a fair few hundreds ................+ the moulding and moulding setup charges .
Rapid proto SLS .....A laser solidifies the shape in a tank of plastic resin .This has come on leaps and bounds in the last few years .I can model up a unit in 3D given a sample and then the worlds your lobster ,the more the cheaper .
I model up a lot of O gauge trains for a local outfit and they also do their own resin stuff for lower quantities ..
Send me an original and I'll check it out :agree:

I used to mold replica Tamiya model car parts which was pretty inexpencive.

Infact I still have enough to make a mold of the part and would just need resin.

I would definately give some a go for the club if needed. I am trying to find some pics of the parts I made before.

Again it would need someone to offer up an original part to copy?.

Just food for thought if everyone gets stuck ;)

Weird. I'm starting to think mine came from a particular batch or new supplier or whatever. I do remember Paul saying that he checked it out in its packaging when it arrived and said it was certainly one of the better ones he's seen stating that the finish was very god in comparison to many. Mine didn't have any primer on it. Maybe it's the primer that makes it a lighter grey?

I've spoken to my guys and can get a silicon tool made to produce some resin units .I just need an original part to take a cast from .
The only issue with resin is the strength of the clippy bits on the rear but until I see one I can't really make a judgment .
It's not coming on and off a lot so it may be OK ,if not I'm sure we can sort something to beef it up ...

Thats not good news about the piston and liners, is that just with GSF mate or are the manufactors stopping production of them?
I'll have a word with my local engineer i use as he can supply me with pretty much most parts, see if i can get a steady supply of them if peeps need them. I'll see what else can be sourced mechanical wise, word was a supply of brand new heads could be in the pipe line i'll see if i can out more on it.

I've put out some initial feelers on tooling for this .Vacuum resin tooling and proper injection moulding.
Bear in mind these parts will be almost identical to the OE part .I can even put the part number and ****e on the back face
The only thing I can't replicate is the material they are made from ,unless Old Turbo says I can set fire to his original and sniff it

You have to remember that that £25ish figure includes the TOOL to produce the part in the first place .
I've always wondered ,being in the industry ,what happens to all these mould tools when they have gone past the 10 year parts supply legislation :confused:It cost something like 150 million to design and tool a new car .
Do they throw them all in the skip or crush them ???On the whole they should be good for producing thousands of more parts but obviously there is little call for 20 year old bits of Renault plastic.................

I'll definately have one also!!

As for the material by the look of it i just think it's a filled Polypropylene?? It looks to be the same material as the bumpers themselves but they're GRP impregnated?

Whatever you have them made of Clee as long as we all etch prime them before we paint them with the colour i'm sure it'll be all gravy! :D

Just throwing my toys out the pram and I've got the reaction I wanted :cooter:

They should be under £15 each .I'm beefing up the clips and guide ribs as well .Once I get a first off sample I can see how strong the clip area is .If it turns out a bit fragile then my man says he could easily cast in some metal clips that will do the job .They do this on some of the train models for that authentic look and feel .

If it all turns out well I should be able to get other things knocked up ......

I've just picked up the first off samples from the silicon tool
The locating ribs and clips have all been beefed up .This is fine as the only reason they were delicate on the original was to stop sink marks on the visible face ,a common issue with injection mouldings .
I shall be needing a 5 to test fit but I reckon I should see one or two knocking around Pod on Sunday :agree:

These will be direct from me personally .
I did ask the committee if we could look at the injection mould tooling etc but it was getting on towards £1500 to produce 100 units. It might have sat in the shop for ages and that sort of money is better spent elsewhere ( we have a lot of 5 parts in the shop now ;) )

It all went a bit dead so I've just got one done in silicon through one of my customers for now .It will produce around 35 I think ...I can get another one done if needs as and when :agree:

I've let them know it fits and am just waiting on a reply for the delivery .
