Just had a £80 fine through the post about my 5 from dvla. Apparently when buyin a car that is sorn, you need to make a new sorn.... is anybody else aware of this? if not beware :(

I had no idea, I thought they would just send me a sorn notice through the post once it was up for renewal again

Hasd this on my 11 turbo when I bought it, had it nearly 1 year then went to tax it and they said theres a gap in the sorn or non taxed period. I wrote to DVLA local office and they tried to fine me £215.00 so I called DVLA Swansea and they said no fine issued, told them it was currently taxed and they said I would not receive a fine just be carefull in future to either tax or sorn the car :ashamed: :wasntme:

So, a year on, no letter and this has popped into my head. Popped my V5 details in again to sorn it and it says it currently sorn.

Now, quick search on here to see when I sorn my 5 and comes up end of Jan, today the 3rd of Feb which is just over 12 months.

Once a car is sorn'd is that it? Or does it have to be renew every year?

I always thought it was 12 months and it had to be renewed

No it's being changed. At some point this year (according to dvla) when you sorn a car that's it until it's next taxed or scrapped. Not sure on the date when it comes into force but it was in last years budget announcement.

Well, it come up earlier saying its currently sorn'd, hence search this thread to try guess when I did it, so clearly over 12 months, so maybe it kicked in the new law? Never had to sorn a car before hence double checking. Il try it again in a week or two just to be sure. :scared:

Ahhhhhh....so hope I don't get caught with this.

My new 5 is off the road. I haven't declared it SORN but I also haven't received the V5 yet.

Assuming as long as I declare it sorn once I get the v5 then I am ok?

Liam, my previous owner failed to send in their copy of the V5 if you have the small form that you cut off from the main part of the V5 apply for it yourself. If not get the wheels in motion anyway. I think it shows you are making an effort to get legal and they are normally helpful.

Thank you dear sir! I do indeed have the little green slip. I shall be arranging a new V5 myself now :-)

The advice is much appreciated :)

it changed on the 17th December 2013, now a single SORN covers you until the car is sold or scrapped

new owner still has to make a new SORN when they receive new logbook

what I don't know is if the cars I SORN'd last year will automatically go to 'lifelong' SORN or if they'll still need renewing to the lifelong scheme as I SORN'd them before the 17/12/2013?

I'm guessing that if it didn't elapsed before the 17th Dec, then maybe its counted as life sorn now? As like I've said above when trying to redo mine that started 31/01/13. :agree:

Can you check online where tax disc/ vehicle enquiry is? failing that call DVLA and ask them to check/explain, they were fine when I bought my 11, didnt tax it or sorn it as it was already done, went to tax it and told there was a 'gap' in the tax/sorn status. So wrote to local office who tried to fine me £215 so called DVLA, they had a look into it, no fines again registration, said everything ok and to watch out for sorn when buying a new vehicle in the future :coffee:

I had a letter about checking details when I bought mine.

I just sorned it online and never got a fine. Not heard anything since.
