some people are running power steering. Alastair is running a saxo electric pump with a megane coupe rack, but this is on his hill climb car which has wide track so the megane rack fits ok. A valver rack is the close match to the 5 rack. Drop him a pm.

I have a spare valver steering rack if required, going cheap.

Would this just be a case of the above steering rack running the saxo/106 electric powered pump with built in reservoir, connect the power feed and two pipes to/from the pump/rack and away you go? Or is there abit more to it than that?

That's pretty much it. You'd need to make sure the pump was on a Relay and only activated once the engine was started of course

Yeah, I was thinking along the lines of a switched live relay set up. It all sounds to easy. What would be the best steering rack for this conversion on a 5, Clio 16v option mention?

I've been looking at Clio 2 electric power steering columns. Not sure if it will fit under a 5 dash though and the mounting points might not fit either and not sure if it will connect to a 5 rack but might find a cheap one and have a go.

A place on ebay sells a controller so the power steering works...

Yes, I've fitted one to my fiesta project & I also know someone who has fitted one to a Mk1 escort.

I got hold of a Clio column and offered it up, the bolt fixings don't match so a plate would need to be made to mount it, not to hard to do.

I tried connecting the upper clio column with all the PAS part on it to the lower steering column of the 5. The lower section needs to be about 1-2" longer as the electric motor hits the heater fan unit, I need to try it with the clio lower column onto the 5 rack but they measure the same UJ to UJ, so unless the clio UJ sticks up off the rack a bit more its not going to fit without a longer lower column. An extended lower column could be made by welding in a section or finding a longer part from another car.

A fair bit of lower dash would need cutting back as well and the center vents would need modifying to fit the electric motor.

Going to look at the Corsa C option, but looking at pics on the net I think the lower part of the column will hit the top of the R5 clutch peddles.

I'm on a mission now though, so I will make this work, I think... :brickwall:

Get a Clio rack, fit the r5 track rods. Bolts straight on.

Mount a saxo/106 pump somewhere.

Connect the pipes or get some custom from pirtek.

Run a 50 amp relay and fuse (embattled merc ones are v cheap) from ignition live or switch.

Job done.

I wouldn't bother with an electric column, too much hassle.
