Hello all, is the story goes I put a new clutch gearbox and flywheel in my car and now when it goes to start it sounds like a bag of spanners. I described the problem to my former Renault parts man dad and he said that I've missed out some bush or sleeve type thing of when lining it all up, anyone know what this is ? Ideally I need a pic to show my mate as its at his unit and he's looking at it while I don't have time

The problem is only while cranking it over and my dad says that this part is something to do with getting the starter in the right place but this was in a discussion over the phone so it was tricky to describe

So can you help ?

If you can thanks in advance

All there is to put starter on is 2 little guide dowells. Does the car turnover and start?

It turns over and will start but while turning the starter motor doesn't sound cool it sounds like those dowels that my dad was on about is it possible to leave those out ? If so that's what may of happened not leaving it lined up properly

Its possible to leave them out but normaley they get stuck on gearbox so there in there ready for when you refitt starter. Does the noise disapper when engines running

I'm not sure I've not actually been there to see if he's fired it up but it doesn't make a noise when turned over by hand

Yeah I'm sure it's starter related as the noise comes from that direction

Ok I fitted a new starter today and its still making a noise it's much quieter though the only thing I can see possibly wrong is there is a slight burr on the ring gear teeth we fitted the dowels also today could the burrs be doing something to the starter making it play up ?

does it sound like its grinding/slipping or screeching/overspeeding.

It's really hard to describe but it doesn't really sound like grinding just a sort it " jangling " but even that doesn't really describe it
