Looking to get a bigger blower as my tomcat may well be dead after another couple k of boosting. Where's a good place to buy a turbo and what specs exactly do I need/want. Cheers amigos.

The turbo that Turbo Ted mentions in this thread seems to be the ideal blower for a well speced c1j

Might be a grand but I want something big time lethal. My tomcat struggles around 20 psi.

That is a lot of dosh for a blower, well out of my league anyways:ashamed:

However, really the power you can reliably extract from a c1j will always be relative to the fatness of ones wallet;) it can be done on the cheap but to do it properly you have to splash the cash in one way or another. Josh, your lump would make some good power with said blower, that's for sure;) your valve collets might not be to keen tho:wasntme:

I rebuilt James s engine this year and with a gt28 made 206bhp and 202 lbft at 18 psi of boost was only limited because of group a carb with standard carb rejeted and second stage etc would of made 225bhp at 22psi

Just to save confusion that was with a 28r. I think it hit full boost around 4600rpm or there abouts. The later gt30 was doing another 50hp with 43psi but maybe another 700rpm of lag.

Sorry, not just a gt28r. This one has a .42 comp cover for smaller displacement engines.

To clear some out: 53,9 exhaust and 60,10 inlet.
Looks a bit goofy to read.(although i'm confused now too)

What kind of rpm will I hit full boost on a carb set up with this blower??

Hi 5

As scoff said 4700 but that was a .82 exh housing so .64 would be sooner

I bought my gt28r from the bay thought I'd take the chance for £100. Fitted the turbo to another car last weekend and.... Boosts luvly with no smoke:smokin: can't wait to fit it to mine

and could you go even smaller exhaust housing for less lag?

There is a .49 rear housing, not sure who sells it though.

Yes you can go for a 47 or a 49AR it should give you full boost around the 3000 to 3500rpm mark. The turbo I'm using now is a t28 front with a t2 rear, pro's are no lag, con's are runs out of puff top end.

13-12-2012, 11:10
Cheers homies. Brigsy you can get a .49 but I think some machine work has to be done...

Yes you can but would not make as much power josh is thinking long term efi 300 hp no chance with a .49But what do I know am only a painter

The T28's that the tuners sold usually came with 0.42 cover, as you say, a bit better suited for smaller engines. The GT28R is 0.60. It'll work quite well with a C1J that can breath but if the engine is not that good then it might surge. I've seen 0.60's surge then swapping to 0.42 cures it.

Boost surge isn't going to be a problem at 20 psi... I hope. In the future I hope to be going efi. Wastegate etc. just time. Turbo is a good starting point while I have the dosh!

Yeah shouldn't be. Going back a few years when I had a C1J I could run a standard BP285 with a 60trim front end with 0.60ar and it would surge pretty bad at 25psi, enough to make the boost gauge wobble at WOT. Swapping it for an 0.42 from a 4x4 cosworth fixed it. I dare say the cosworth cover will bolt right up to the GT28R if it came to it :)

like I have said, whatever blower you choose it's going to be a compromise one way or another, I think going for a t2/t3 hybrid like turbo Ted had on his c1j is the best of both worlds.

however the 28rs will work well and give you the figures your after and we know your motor breaths very very well and continues to make power after 7k, and also your not shy at giving those kind of revs either:wasntme: looking at the state of the valve stem seals I would have said so anyways ;)

maybe try it with the larger a/r at first and of your not keen then look for a .49.

brigsy, how would you rate the 28rs against your old 60trim t28?
