View Full Version : A car cover in a barn
Would you put a car cover on a car if its going to be stored in a barn over the winter??
The barn is a unheated and dry with 3 brick walls and one permenantly open entrance.
If I already had a cover I would, if not no.

if its out of the way of rain , maybe a cloth type cover
What about indoor / outdoor cover??
I wont be going back to take it off for it too air out?
I just brought a good cover it says to remove once a week for all moisture to escape so if the elements ain't too bad in the barn I would not put 1 on

Sling a few bed sheets over it.

What if some birds get In ad sh1t on it? Fecks the paint right up, sling something on it just to keep things off the top, but not to keep moisture.

Breatheable cover.

Breathable cover all the way, especially in a place where there's no wind like in a barn (as I found where the ties were keeping the cover tight over the body it would gradually rub the paint over long periods). The way they keep the dust and general crap off is great.

I'd be more worried about the rodents using it as a home through winter. They have to chew to keep their teeth down.
Once the cover is on you could run and fix some boards around the lower edge of the car like a skirt to keep out pests.

You won't stop them getting in. Just run the car every week and keep an eye out for signs of them inside.

Matts got rats in his garage/barn, they chew through wooden walls, tunnelled under the floor so that's crumbled away.. I've had rodents in my garage, dunno how they get in, but the 5's full of paper and rubbish as bedding
Who said anything about wood? :wasntme:
All sounds a bit weak tbh guys. There are ways to keep rodents from chewing on your particulars IMO.
I suppose it depends on what's inside the barn and where it is situated.
EDIT - just read that it has a permanently open entrance, which suggests it's farm-yard related or some such. Yeah, I suppose it's certainly a problem worth thinking about properly :agree:

I have seen the results of mice/rats chewing through wiring looms and grommets to get through from the engine bay, through the firewall into the car interior.
The mess, damage and cost they can cause is unreal.
So what's your advice for helping prevent it?

You can't. Only way is to put the car away from them. I had a brand new kubota rtv on hire. Left it in a barn for 1 evening and they destroyed the fuel lines.
Had a rat chew through my gas pipe on my fork lift and that's out in the open.

they can pretty much fit through a key hole, my garage is free from holes, but they got under the door thats less than a finger gap..
Stay focused stay alive..
Yes it's a old retired farm yard it's stored in, he has campers and caravans there for the winter. There's a few chickens and old bales of hay kicking around so I imagine there's a few rodents too.
I'm a Renault 5, get me out if here. !!
Are they likely to chew through carpet and eat phase one seats??

Well they say you're never more than 10ft away from a rat, so it's impossible then. I'm surprised any cars make it to their first anniversary.

Opened the bonnet of a car sat outside our unit for a few months awaiting being scrapped and literally 20 little rodents scattered everywhere, bonnet lining chewed to bits and a nice nest on the engine. Couldnt/didnt get inside the car tho.

Why do you have to pick and argue everything. If a cars in a barn a rodent will have a go at it.

nice ring of rat repellent or something around the 5. Farms are possibly the worst place for them. Deffinetly worth thinking about.

Why not put it on axle stands high enough so they cant climb in there, they wont get in unless they start climbing on top of each other like a circus act :scared:

I think they would still find a way, but do what you can and hope there's something more interesting elsewhere.. Perhaps you could grease them up so there little feet lose traction..
I mean the axle stands, not the rats..

This threads funny; we're all dreaming up ways of keeping pesky rodents out of a Renault 5!
As my contribution I'd say put a big circle of rat poison around the car - loads of it! :cooter:

They will die hours after eating it. Generally in your car :cooter:
What you want is one of these, except without the child abuse part.

Or better yet, deploy one of these:

Good idea but there's loads of hens knocking around.
I thought I was on to a winner keeping it out the way of the winter, but now I'm worried about the rats and my bonnet lining:(

So the rats eat the car, the cat eats the rats that eat the car, the cat also eats, the hens that eat corn that Doesnt eat anything, what eats the cat that eats the rats that eat the car.... A fox!!!! That's your dam answer get foxy baby
Car in barn means rat traps, poison, and cats are all needed.
I used to keep rats as pets they are very intelligent and will get the 5, start it and fcuk off to the nearest drive through....
I'm sure the rats, cat, hens and fox would like a cozzie cover to keep them all warm....
E I e I ooh....
Maybe a pithon would work pop that bad boy on the back seat.... Its game on for the rats

I've kept cars in a old shippin on a farm for years & I know loads of farmers who store vehicles long term/hoard crap!! Have never had any issues so far, I think rats & other rodents will go to the other areas in the yard with food sources such as the chicken corn ect, there's also usually lots of straw & hay about to make beds in. Could be wrong but you'll prob be alright!!
As for killing the horrible things, You can't beat a feisty little jack Russell!!!
