hi, im after some help, i want an r5 gt but i need to know a few things first, i currently have a td04 starlet gt which soon il be selling to get a r5, however first id like to ask what i could do to a c1j for £3k and what problems do i have to look out for? plus what is insurance like on them as i 19 and on my starlet its quite cheap, so im wondering if the groups would be similar?

Welcome...

For 3K, you can do a lot. All depends what you want the car for, track, road use, drag strip? and also what power you are looking for? 180bhp, 200bhp, 250bhp+?

As for what to look out for, check out the tech section on here, it has all the little and big things to look out for ;)

http://www.rtoc.org/boards/forumdisplay.php?f=17

As for insurance, you can get classic car policy (I think if older than 15years)... The R5 is only a 1.4, group 14 if i'm right?

Good luck with getting an R5, there are a couple for sale on the club here.

P.S. what you looking to get for the Starlet?

i think someone said your ages can be a problem with some classic policys, shop around first..

building a bad a55 gtt costs 5 times the price as buying one, if you know what your looking for.. watch out for bullsh1t, many 5's have it fitted:crap:

this is the best place to start looking for a gtt, sling up anything your going to look at and watch the members rip it to sh1t.. :agree:

Is she able to see that link, not being an RTOC member?

Katie, the problems and potential outcomes for £3k are myriad. You need to join up so you can hunt around the site for the advice you're looking for.

As for insurance, the only people that can give you the answers you need are your insurers, although there are lots of insurance threads on RTOC discussing how best to get the cheapest and most appropriate deal.

would it not be better to spend the 3k on the starlet ? its a bit more modern has already got efi and from what i hear there is plenty of power potential with the right bits and with 3k to chuck at it you should be able to get more power

As i understand it, shes assuming 3k from selling the Starlet. If i'm wrong correct me.
Starlets are very nice and as already said already EFI. Though 5's are a love affair.
Best imho is to get a solid base with a clean motor on. Not a super mint-OE one cause obviously you're gonna invest some money on it so spemnidn thousands to buy an OE so you rip it apart and make it hardcore racing is not a good idea.

Just watch for previous crashes, rust and decent engine. Rest you're gonna fix yourself :smokin:

hi guys, ive had a couple of starlets now, and mine currently is 240bhp, external wastegate, td04 etc etc and is really clean, just fancy a change and love the look of some r5's, plus my mate had a clean white ph2 that was nice, id spend £1500 on a standard gt then £3k on top, ideally id like the same power as my gt at the momment but obviously being old school lol :D

thnx :)

Get a gtt then spend your 3k on fitting a turbo'd f7p with a gt28 and you should see 300bhp:D

You could have best of both and do what I did.

My brother had a few starlets/glanzas,and I always thought the 5 was better in the twisties, and looked better

Keep the gt turbo and get the engine forged! Few engine mods and you will be seeing bout 350 bhp with cash left over! Unless you pick up a mint oe r5 and your good at mechanics spraying and welding

I'd say that a gtt for £1.5k could well need a lot of money throwing at it before you start thinking about the engine. They're over 20 years old now, rusty, and worn out, as most have had a hard life.

Just something to consider.....

You might as well added steer clear altogether.

You've got to totally love these cars to buy one, they aren't the kinda car you can just buy new parts for when it breaks, even the mint looking ones need fair few £'s on top. Carpet, trim etc hide all sorts of body work problems.

Then, if some one happens to bump into you after you got it how you want, the trouble starts all over again for finding parts or even worse, another decent shell!

As Billy said, "just something to consider"

What few mods mate would make a c1j make 350 bhp I would love to know as I'm looking at more mods now to try and make just about 300 with the c1j

Yeah a lot more over the years as it's been a slow process of building then breaking things.

but the basics of my engine at the mo is

EFI 2K
Turbo £500-£1K
intercooler and pipe run £150
Cam £250-£300
paddle clutch with using valeo cover and bearing £250

So not too far away from 3k. it can be done on just a carb but I got fed up of my carb being crap every time temps dropped below 10degrees with my set up and other stuff. 200-250bhp can be done on not a lot of cash. But the power and realiblity comes with a good tune and set up over time.

i heard you were close to 150:dearme::p
