I sold my mini so I'm looking out for a cheaper car with some back seats. I happened to look at the megane 225s seem to be a nice car for not alot of cash. Have my eye on a 55 plate with 60k on the clock for £4k, frsh 2 owners.

Whats the good points and bad for these car please guys, the r26 or f1 seem to be a better car with the nice seats but i im not paying an extra £3k for some recaro seats and it being 1 year newer.

Ive seen a few 225's sell for £4-5k with 30-40k miles on recently, a lot of car for not a lot of money. The mrs wants one now:)

Not worth spending the extra few k for an r26 if its primarily a road car though?!

nice cars :D check if the cambelts been done, mileage not enough but age is, also if you can check for play on the front suspension they have two crazy bearings on the hub that swivels if these get play in them which i have seen a couple with its £200plus to sort a side.

Do they need replacing often tony??

Tony Walker

not often no, the ones ive done have been 70k plus. You cant buy the bearings seperate they come as a hole hub unit and are a bit of a pain to fit. I think there is a guy that can supply the bearings seperate, he has a website but didnt get back to me and would be a waiting on postage.

Get one phil, a fab car, ive been driving one now for allmost two years, mine has the lux pack, leather everything, all the goodies etc , its a 2006 on 34k, two owners, me inc, its a lovely car , driven casualy it returns 35mpg, ill be sprited with it when i like, i love the fact it just starts and will go if you want it to!!!, a touch of luxury to my grubby life of treework..., ive done the cambelt etc etc and put new uprated discs on the front and new pads and a full service, nowt else... not needed too!!!
ive only used it once in anger on a hillclimb.., third gear is awesome.. , id say to anyone if you want luxury and quite a bit of power, then go buy one!!

If i didnt love the r5 so much id of bought a r26 even an R and gone track with it..

Thanks for the heads up guys, the one I have my eye on has had the belt done.

Jon where the cars at that price from a dealer? The 4 doors seem about £500 cheaper to.

I got a r26 with LSD.

If you can afford it , get it. The LSD is the Daddy. The car is quite literally adjustable on a bend. You can feel the LSD pulling you tight to the kerb.

The remap well and return pretty good MPG for the power.

Window regulators are known weak points as well. Renault offer a good will contribution now.

SOD those bearing having play

THEY sieze solid! steering goes stiff and then hedge finder springs to mind... renault know about it and blame 'our roads' as they don't have this problem in any other country!

apart from that I love mine... keep saying that I'm gonna sell it..... but I've had it from new and its still here... as it does everything i need it to

Whats the best way to check these bearing then guys, drive slow lock to lock or get it up in the air and move the wheel?

I think i might just hang on and look for a r26, found a blue one private and im sure i would get it for and extra grand :)

thanks guys

Never volunteer to replace a NSF lower arm on an r26 either.... It's a bumper off subframe drop job :-(

I had no idea the price on them he dropped that much. A lot of car for the money.

Ricardo

They seem like half decent cars for the money, always been tempted to get into a 225 but the MPG compared to the 182 (constant 38+) stops me. I'd love to have a go in 1 to see what they're all about.

They are expensive to run, insure and maintain, and , hence not really what everyone wants these days in times of poverty!

I would love one if i could afford to run it everyday.

Not so sure about the insure bit. Ok I am 33, 9 years Ncb but my "stage 1 " megane r26 is £525 with business miles on it.

Tyres are expensive if you stick with Oem.

I have had a rad - that wasn't daft money.

Drive with a lead foot everywhere and mog will plummet but find me a car that won't?

Love mine..

This is an absolute bargain for someone. Its the phase 2 with lux pack.

http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/renault/renaultsport-megane/2006-megane-225-lux-model-mint/759897

These are great cars, I had the R26 and now have the R, both great cars for the money. I'd say if you can stretch your budget 1-2K you'll be able to find a tidy R26.

Anyone have any thoughts on the diesel 175 version. Problem I have is I need to swap the golf gti for a family "sporty" diesel car. And I've whittled it down for a seat fr and one of these 175 Megan's.
thoughts??

had mine for over 3years now, got it bang on 2years old and 20k on clock. Havnt had the priveledge of doing the hub yet. But iv done all the work on it. Mines got a forge intercooler, itg panel filter, full miltek exhaust including decat, thats hidden behind back of engine, and a rst stage 2 map. I love it, can get 28mpg out of it normal driving, more on motorway, alot less when booting it.

Iv also had to replace the clutch and flywheel which wasnt as bad of a job as i 1st thought, also did the cambelt on the last service, abit tight in there lol but wasnt to bad in the end.

I've got one , great car to drive but I got probs with it ... Driveshaft is clicking away .... Renault say its a 3hr job and there the only place I can get one from ,parts cost is .. £200 for a recon shaft else £380 for a brand new one. Don't fancy doing it on my drive .... Reno say its a pig of a job , don't know if that's right.

Both inner tie rods were worn ....not a bad job if you can get the tool to remove them as they are round .... No flats on them ... The replacements do have flats on them ... Thank god.

When doing the tie rods I found that the lower hub bolt on the drivers side was loose ... The fella before me has had the cv boot done on the clicking driveshaft so someone hasn't tightened it up properly. Now when I tighten the bolt up the hub is going too tight .. Anyone know the correct torque setting for this bolt ???? So maybe hub bearings have gone ... Not sure yet as I need to check passenger side as to how stiff the hub should be ... So I goes into Reno to price up a hub and the bloke says I need all kinds of stuff ... Saying I wouldn't be able to get the hub flange out the hub and if I did then I wouldn't be able to get the bearing of the hub flange .... Was just happy saying I need this and that .... Oh the hub flange was £700 quid ... In the end... £1200 quid for parts ! ... I just said ok and walked out ....

Going for its mot tomorrow with the clicking shaft .... Lets see if it passes :)

My mrs has just bought one, artic blue 46k miles 54 reg. Its pretty much standard apart from 18" speedline turini's and cat back milltek exhaust. Not sure if its been mapped or not but seems pretty lively, superb on the corners and the brakes are excellent. Awesome value for money.

the standard map is very 'smooth' but still fast. If its been mapped itr will seem more lively when power comes in

The 225s are renowed for cooking there brakes within a few spirited applications.
