Hi guys, not new to building car projects albeit it the others are usually on larger budgets and invole lots of paint polish and expensive parts, where as this one is designed to be more function over form , so i have a car i can park in rough areas without worrying about to much, although ive never really had a play at all going sideways, i wanted a cheap winter motor , and stumbled across a cheap s14a with tax and test, it has 3 rusty arches and isnt exactly pretty, but its 100% standard, unlike most of them which often seemed butchered , which isnt a problem but generally the quality of the work sucked.
Anyway, another problem this was had was a boost leak, a big one.. as such i me and chidley on here fitted a front mount last night which seems to have solved the problem, the standard wing mount intercooler feel apart as i tried to unbolt it.
One question is, its of my understanding the bost solenoid that sits on the passenger side wing detects for knock , and also ups the standard wastegate boost up to 10psi from 7. I wasnt 100% how to re input this into the circuit after we did away with the carbon canister etc during the front mount install. Does it just sit inline between the turbo actuator and the cold side of the intercooler ?. and if so which outlet goes to which.
Standard before we begin

and front mounted with 24hrs of purchasing the car :)

Continued in my quest to make sure the base motor is healthy , and gave it frehs oil and filter.
Also ordered a oil pressure, temp and boost gauge to keep an eye on things, aswell as a boost controller on its way.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/another/IMG_3715.jpg
Also fitted a full system to get it breathing a little better, the system was off an s14 so i also had to swap elbows
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/another/IMG_3709.jpg
Also ordered a walbro 255 pump just incase the old one has become weak at all.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/another/IMG_3716.jpg
now the basics are there ill concenrate on sorting suspension wheels and just using it :)
Update
Welded up the diff
Fitted fresh coilovers
Fitted full 3" exhaust & downpipe
Also half way through the boost controller setup, however it began to rain which made is impossible to finish the setup

Nice motor but I gotta ask why your welding the diff? The 14a should have an LSD as standard, the only time they didn't is when it had an autobox
These are such great cars!
I had an S14, I loved it. I can't believe you got it for the winter. That means tail out all the flamin' time, whether you want it or not  It was my first RWD car and took me 6months to really learn how to drive it.
Get that Walbro in ASAP, before you get left stranded somewhere :agree:
Regarding diff, my S14 didn't have an LSD (so fits with what Os says).
Turbo exhaust gasket - make sure you replace that as part of your exhaust work. They are regular culprits for failing.
Great work so far btw. Not sure about that solenoid thing.

Boost solinoid is controlled by the ecu and will allow boost to rise to 10psi, as far as I am aware nothing to do with knock sensor
Standard setup is - 0.5bar (7psi) 1st and 2nd, 0.7 bar (10psi) 3rd 4th and 5th
Bypass the boost solinoid and 0.9 (13psi) is more than safe with supporting mods which you have
DG
The lsd's are viscous type, and im building it just to play at pod and birmingham wheels with (drifting). Viscous are fine for the occasional slide but its far better to have a perm welder in when planning to go from one transition to the next etc, Same story with mx5 lsds. Hence the welded in there :).
I did away with that boost control valve thing and stuck an apexi avcr on there, great bit of kit, and thanks guys, its not the best shell , but if i bend it ill reshell it into an s13 :). I cant wait to get it somewhere nice and open to really play, i need to get better on my throttle control, at the moment its all or nothing, coming from the mx5 that wasnt a problem but in this it really is lol :wasntme:
oh and the pumps fitted :d
fortunatlly my drive to works very short, and its amazingly comfortable, being that im not really to fussed about the bodywork, and keepign on top of the cleaning yada yada its a real nice feeling.. finally car when it goes wrong i can just learn over the wings and bumpers to work on.. really does make things easy.
oh and duncan currently im running 0.85psi, however ocasionly particular in 1st/2nd when loss of traction occurs its swining into 0.92psi territory, think i need to lower the duty slightly in them gears.

ive had a few s14s over the years and even with standard suspension they handle great. Funnily enough all of mine have been emerald green too.
Personally I don't agree with the welded diff, it generally makes them understeer and a pig to drive everyday and not pleasant to drive fast. There are many reasonably priced after market LSD options out there.
If you need them I have a rocker cover which is stripped ready for polishing, spark plug cover, coil packs ad a good starter motor.
Keep this thread updated. I love reading up on 200sx builds without having to head on to sxoc to read crap about body its and skidding all the time :agree:

ive not seen it in the flesh but ive seen the pics, looks an absolute minter that!.
This things somewhat of a dog, but perfect for what i need, I just wanted somthing cheap as possible but as close to mechanically sound as possible to abuse somewhat, Ive got quite a few cars, but i always put to much time and money into them, and then cant hoon the life outa them, whereas this one is diffrent.
cheers for the offer on parts, but ive already got another 2 engines complete with all the parts as spare lol

Nice mate I will pop down when your free for a nosey :-)
had my first session at pod on wednesday.. Was a real good hoot, went with my friend and had a cracking time.
Played in the pens for a little while,Learnt going around in circles and creating smoke is very easy, so then speant the remainder of the day trying to get the kidney right (which was a steep learning curve) but towards the end i was linking the kidney some of the time. Next session i plan a bit more practice on the kidney and then onto the big track.
Car held out fine which i was dead happy with.
Hes my first play on the figure of 8, i managed to sus this one about 3 attempts later :)

Great video :) I've got a drift day tomorrow around a circuit at oulton park can't wait, luckily for me its not my car but watching that vid makes me wanna get some rwd :)
hehe cheers guys..
Your probably right trev, although not in the same ways as r5's etc.. I appreciate them as a motorsport style car.. but i would never ever want to have a prim and proper one.. i prefer just to spank the arse off it, I see the ones cycling at like 6k in perfect o/e conditin and they do nothing for me.. however slagged up with a drifty kit etc i can rep it :)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ugTTC6mwNDg&feature=youtu.be
I'll be getting another S body in the future. I really miss my S15 but I would never have drifted it. I drove both my 14a and S15 in **** winter months and if you know how to handle a rear wheel drive car, it's fun:D
What do u think of the Volvo 340's for a cheap drift car seen a few with the Renault engines in on eBay tempted lol:p
picked up these last night.. When/If i coem to re-rusting this thing , ill be chucking these grp wings on, gives me an extra +25 mm of clearance for the wheels aswell.. so win win all round.
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/another/abajyruv.jpg
chucked some fresh plugs in as the old ones looked a little.. ermm decrepid!
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/another/IMG_4055-1.jpg
Also picked up some subframe locking collars in hope to begin stiffening up everything as currently its all just a bit, 'wishy washy'

Also a couple of pics from Blackett

Since i bought this car its had very vague steering, mentioned it to a few people. Anyway , decided to chuck a pair of steering rods one, track rods appeared to be in good condition , and i wanted to get a spacer in anyway to grab a bit of cheap extra lock.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/another/IMG_4095.jpg
Fitted the tein rods with the 6mm spacer, and tracked it up somewhat by eye, and all is nice.. plus an extra tad of lock.. however.. Steering wobble still there.. Had another look , and then i spotted it... both sides of the Steering uj bolts were loose, like finger tight loose. 15 secs with a 12mm spanner had my steering all sorted, quite scary, my guess is that its possibly been removed/replaced and whoever did it never did the bolts up and since then its been held on pretty much by luck.
Lucky you kept looking mate would of easy to of missed that how did you get on with that 205 you where doing i enjoyed reading what you where doing
Its currently at the bodyshop mate, awaiting a fresh coat of white :), Although if im honest ive been uming and aring about possibly selling it when done, will break my heart as i love the car, but a potential career change means i could do with freeing up some money, and it dosent do enough for me that the r5 dosent already. Will only let it go for strong money though, hopefully the project thread will help sell it
Yea the thread will help but the only trouble is that no one wantsa tidy car i have seen some really nice cars on here that they cant sell but you can sell a nail in no time i guess that poeople cant afford the one big lump summ
This looks like so much fun love it :)..... plus couldn't help but notice the RB26 in one of the pictures, that wouldn't be making its way into this would it lol ;)
Indeed this is true Chris, although my advantage will be the lack of need to sell it quick, so if it takes a year for the right buyer than so be it i guess. Whoever buys it will still be getting a bargain :(, Very smart and well sorted track car it will be.
It is real good fun, i wont play it down and say im not enjoying it :), thats not an rb matey, thats just a crappy ca18 out of an s13 :)
Can u tell me how much u wpuld be looking for my mate is mad on them and i know he wants another after xmas
to be honest its still in for paint at the moment, and theres a few bits i need to finish up, but im going to be putting it up at around 3.5k, with a fresh 12 months.
Grabbed myself some rocker stoppers, mainly for peice of mind
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/another/IMG_4150-1.jpg
Fitted an apexi air filter
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/djinuk/another/IMG_4157.jpg
Small battery and the usual intercooler run as the previous one ran behind my wheel which was fine until hitting full lock.

Is there anything to slap on the tyres to reduce grip and strain on the engine/clutch/transmission/tyres? like oil??? lol
hehe nah , to be honest you need grip on the rear, else you just spin, nothin worse than a completely crap set of rears, to be honest i think it was just very bad luck that day.. ah well happens :(

Quick question - how difficult was it to remove the fuel pump? Apparently mine has been uprated but I want to check it
dead easy mate, 5 min job tops.. take out rear seat.. 4 bolts cold a cover down, then the fuel pump mount slides onto a clip in the tank, just pull it up and look , ideally you wanta walbro 225.
Id get it sliding personally dude, such a good laugh, and your more than welcome to come with me, pods a great place to learn, just turn up and go, tyres are £10 a pair fitted. Im going on weds 20th :)

Now im in a dilema of whether to repace the bumper wing, bonnet and light for another 14a setup, or convert to a cheaper s14 front end ... or just maybe replace the light, fit some bonnet pins and frankenstein the thing.
Id go for the cheapest option, flog it back together and abuse

Id go for the cheapest option, flog it back together and abuse
:agree: looks good enough as is imo, mines a little battle scared from shell island at Oulton... but i use/abuse it everyday so its not meant to be pretty :D
Frankenstein the mofo like you said to me you want something you ain't gotta worry about
Do not put on the S14 front, it looks ****. 14a looks so much better, parts are cheap now, you only need a head light really.
Reading this thread makes me feel like on on the sxoc or driftworks. Love the stanced cars:)
only issue at the moment is the bonnets managed to loose about an inch in length and there for wont clasp, i may pin it.. or chuck another bonnet on.
If i went for the s14 front end id bung a supermade kit on it with the cash left over

Desperate to get to another drift day now the car was back out, but with slight nerves that i hadnt drifted in a while, and also questioning my diff and rear brakes i was secretly crossing my fingers the car worked.
Unfortunately on the sunday before the drift day i had an accident, a trip to hospital, a set of crutches and 2 xrays later im told ive tore my ligaments in my foot.. I almost sell my ticket but then last minute decided i needed to drift some how.. so i kept it..
Fortunately my body seems to heal quick and this was my foot on the day before , and yes thats bruised all the way along.. it is also the same on the other side, but it was better and i could fit my foot in my trainer.. meaning the drift day was on !

so more wheels and tyres came in the boot of my friends merc

Great fun:cool:
DJ, do you remember when you refurbished the outside of a pair of Clio headlight lenses? They were faded/scratched/dull and IIRC you used wet/dry, polish and a lot of elbow grease and they came up like new. You showed before and after pics and they looked great.
Well I have looked thru a ton of your threads, including all the pages of your S14, MX5, 205 and Tungy GTT builds but I can't find that post (which is where I thought it was put as an aside).
If you can remember where it is that would be great. Whatever the case, I'm looking for some info on what products to buy/use and what to be careful of (which I think you already gave me on that thread, I just can't find it now). :cartman:
My sis has a Polo that has faded lenses and her b/f wants to have a crack at sorting them out. I am right in thinking that the Clio headlights are plastic? I still can't understand how fine sandpaper can clean up scratches like that but whatever you did looked mint! :)
Yes Clio lights are plastic. You will need 1200 followed by 1500 wet and dry, that should remove the pitted surface and then use some Meguires ScratchX on a microfbre cloth to bring back the shine though that will be hard work without a polsher of some sort.
It was in my 306 build thread trev, but yea basically if go 800grit, 1200 ,1500 and then 2000, then I use a polishing mop with some form of abrasive polish, I used g3, hope that helps buddy, the sand papers will be done wet with warm soapy water for best effect, any issues just give me a shout but its pretty easy :)
Thanks gents, that's really useful, I'll forward that on. :agree:
Ah yeah, the the 306. How many projects have you done! :D
Even then it was tough to find as the search bar doesn't return anything on '306' despite that being in the feckin' thread title, lol.

I've robbed the pics if that's ok :D
haha yea ive done a few buddy.. just collected a tyre machine for the drifting lark :D yay
and yep rob any pics you want :) , that 306 is still going strong drove by a girl in Ireland :)
found a couple more pics, but better still a video.. i didnt realize this was taken at the time, not of my best run certainly but still funny, Im often skeptical of putting videos up like this as it tends to allow for the .. do its, dont do that brigade.. but still :)

:agree:
Just watched the Mark Webb YT vid from the post a bit further up. He's bloody good! The whole thing looks dangerous though, he drifted up to where he wanted to park, right next to a line of cars, plus you have what seems like all abilities on the track at the same time :scared:
Best bit is at the start where in the background you can see an MGB GT drifting past
hehe yea i know what you mean about the mgb..
On that big track its basically a free for all, but if any marshalls see that somebody is pushing there luck, or isnt really fit for it they put them onto the other tracks.. all the other tracks are 1 car only spec, and designed to teach u diffrent things, whether it be just initiating a drift, or changing direction, or even slowing it down on the handbrake for technical stuff so theres options for a more safer experience.
the bit where he drifts past the que, its pretty hard to get it wrong there to be fair, its quite a tight corner so your slowed down an awefull lot, if anything you go through the fence onto the small track beside it :P

Deft steering wheel control, looks almost second nature through practice :agree:
Yea it took a bit of getting used to ..
Kinda like letting the wheel go and just catchign it where you want it, then when you want to give it a change in direction just giving it an idea of where you want it. Good fun though once you get the hang of it, far from perfect wheel skills but getting there :)
