View Full Version : rebuild - dizzy drive gear

Just finishing a rebuild on an engine, is fairly standard other than a cat cam (quite a mild profile)

When i was installing the dizzy drive gear, I couldn't get it to fit at exactly to right angles to the block (as it says in the workshop manual) I'd estimate it being 5 / 10 degrees out. is this normal or a case of needed a vernier pulley as the cam timing is out? (which I haven't checked yet?)

Cheers

Oli

Hi oli,

thats quite normal, don't worry about it :) you might have noticed the cap contacts don't sit at exactly 90° to the block anyway.

Piper 260? never heard of that.

So this is a custom cam from Catcams?

haynes gets it wrong too. 80° from the block is possible though assuming standard cam timing, it'll be close enough for the dizzy to work.

hmm, really winds me up when they can't write technical manuals properly, just goes to show that half the time they don't actually take the car apart before they write it! :sad2:

think its only 5-10 deg out, going to whizz the head off a spare engine that i was planning on giving a refresh of after xmas to double check against that tomorrow too.

yeah, custom grind, to make the most of the standard turbo... managed to get a decent deal on it, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered..

I was assuming piper did a 260 grind, which is what it more or less is, but with slightly different lift, overlap and duration..., will enable the turbo to spool up slightly earlier and create more mid range torque, won't do sweet fa for the top end, but I now know how the WRC boys feel, the T2 tubby might as well be a 25mm restrictor :dearme:

if you want to share the numbers that came with the cam I'll show you how it really compares with a Piper 270.

possibly, gonna rolling road it first and see what (if any) benefits it makes.. There are a couple of peeps who have made noises about preparing a 5 for Toyo tires saloons next year. I doubt it'll make more than 3-7% difference on the standard cam (if that) but if it does make that (or possibly more - expecting an increase in torque rather than bhp) don't fancy posting the exact spec out in the open..

More than happy to pm though if your interested

I can understand why you don't want the guys you race against seeing what you're up to, so yes PM me and I'll do you some graphs and email them back to you.
