The gf mini one (1.4 petrol) has developed a loud ticking noise which you can hear when you are driving.

A couple of weeks ago we had topped up the oil as it was low and garage asked if we had an oil leak, which we haven't.

Anyway, drove 600 miles in last week, checked the oil about 400 miles and it was fine.

Anyone shed any light?

Timing chain tensioner, my cooper s had low oil, then it started to sound like a desiel.

It was about £15 for the part and 15 mins to fit it :)

My s sounds terrible until warm, then it sounds lovely - it's not uncommon for an R52 to do this.

What year is it?

Titles a give away :) its a r56 I guess on that plate. The tensioner works by oil pressure, google it, it's common fault on all minis.

BMW where going to charge me about £200 :(

is it the PSA 1.6 EP engine, same as a peugeot 207 vti?

timing tensioner as above, also timing can slip and cause noise and poor running

really really common issue with them, along with using lots of 5w30 low ash oil

My mrs has a 08 mini one and I think it's ticky... Can you put a video or sound up of it??? I've seen YouTube vids of ticking cooper s's but no ones that sound like her 1.4
It sounds like she's running 1000cc injectors lol

My mrs has said its done it from day one, do minis all sound the same?????

thanks for the quick replies, appreciate the help.

after a better listen i now describe this as a tapping noise which can be heard best down by the drivers side wheel.

see this video below, i start off with the camera by the wheel where you can hear the tapping noise quite clearly and then pan to the engine when you can hear the 'standard' sort of ticking noise and then pan back down to the wheel...have a listen!

That sounds 'bottom endy' :crap:

I'd be tempted to get a stethoscope and listen around the bottom end/timing chain areas.

The timing chain is down there, mine sounded a bit more tappy, but the tensioner is what my money is on, the low oil and ticking was the same symptoms as mine, buy the part and fit it.

maybe the garage did overfill it when she took it in.

shes taking it to a garage later so i'll post up here what they say.

i'll get one of those tensioners brought Phil, cheers.

Mine was a bit different to that, but mines a r53. Ring the dealer and order the part, im sure mine was about £15, i may have the receipt still, but the part number will be different.

Its called the death rattle or something like it, when the oil gets to thick or low it does not push the tensioner out fully and it causes the chain to rattle.

I got in from behind with the wheel off, you can access from the top, just double check with your model. I then fitted the new part, removed the mail coil lead, cranked the engine till i got my oil pressure, fitted he coil lead back on, bingo :)

Maybe change the oil to if its been in a while ;)

the oil has been changed at the correct intervals so i'm not to concerned in changing it before it's due.

she has taken into to a garage this morning and he has said the oil level is fine and that the tensioners are prone to failing.

hopefully the tensioner should sort it!

The garage had the car on Monday and inspected further, cut a long story short he has advised us to take the car back to Mini as he suspects engine damage, possibly pistons slapping.

He said he could obviously strip the engine to diagnose the fault but said it should be given to Mini to diagnose and best case scenario they foot the bill, as it's got FSH with mini, its only 5 years old and done 44k, but all that's not a given so we are in a rock and hard place situation...

We have looked at new cars, old cars, additonal warranties, engines on ebay etc..

But it's forcing us in to changing a car we intended to keep!!

At the minute the car is drivable but we are just using the Clio between us!

Sorry to here that, not good. The r56 seem to have so many more problems with them, I hope you get it sorted :)
