Hey dude, yeah am actually looking at a long term project, I've had three 5 gt Turbos before. My aim is to restore a shell that's on the Brink of death and basicly revive it! I
Love O.E but complete O.E isn't quite my cup of tea, so the aim is to create a 5 with a modern flair nothing majour, just subtle inputs. I have spoke very briefly with a tradesman on the forums about what he has in stock come november I hope that A shell will be on my drive way! Not overly fussed on the phase as both have potential that excites me!

Advice required, Can any one help?!.

Today I spent a short period of time down a yard that I know home
A few "dead" Renault 5 gtt's,

Now am after a "long term" project and one that I can start from scratch. However am looking for some structural advice, the one I have chosen is a D' reg electric blue and it's in a state the bottom of the rear quarter panel has had a blow. Before I get to deep into something that can not be fixed, I've listed some problem issues maybe you could help with ?

can the R/Q panel be repaired?.
The front end had some rust around and on the cross member! (behind the front bumper is that the right name?) Can this be replaced?
Inner and outer sills?

This car has stood in more or less the same place since
2005 and probs before that. I've been offered this car at a very reasonable price and being a leccy blue one thought maybe just maybe I could with all your helps save this one

Many Thanks! (ps sorry if this is in wrong place)

Pretty rare colour. I'd personally say as long as the windscreen isnt rotten then go for it, pretty sure one of the rear quarters is still available, think its the pass side but not sure, you could allways cut the side out of a scrapped campus or something. front crossmember is easily repairable(mainly because its not visible so doesnt have to be pretty) theres a fair few fast 5s out there with no front crossmember anyway.... silly intercoolers lol.

Hey tony, just priced up the following

New:
Head light surround panel,
Near & offside sill replacement panels
Near & offside jacking points
And two new wings ... All for a price of £500

Given this and the price of the car together actually comes well under the original "budget" so to say. I know this is a million dollar question, but what sort of price do you think could be spent on having these panels done?.

Tony Walker

id bank on it needing inner sills too. Ashy does replacements, not sure if he still has or does them you'd have to ask. wings are easy, bolt on off yourself, front panels not too bad as it its the sills that take time, and you will probably find a few other little holes, rear chassis legs and rear axle mounting points tend to rot also the boot floor where it joins the inner arch is common, i'd say bank on 600 labour worst case? and you shouldnt be too far out? but prices will vary alot from place to place, you could probably find cheaper, and almost certainly dearer. Then depends if it needs paintwork. also depends what can be done with the rear quarter. your best bet is to get handy with a grinder/welder :D

Thanks matty:agree:

Yeah Tony I am really considering this now I set aside a rolling shell budget of up To £1000 so this car + panels + labour will come only a couple of hundred Over so really tempted plus like you say it's a hard to find colour! Is there anything else to take into consideration with a car been stood that long, appart from the obvious breaks and suspension probably being Knackerd.?

Tony Walker
09-09-2012, 17:11
Not really, rear discs little dearer than norm as the bearings are pressed in them. Everything's still pretty cheap. You'l always end up spending more than you want to lol.

m5tt
09-09-2012, 17:58
Ha yeah, I've spent a fair few unjustified pounds on some 5's before hand, So this is another reason why perhaps taking the bigger step here in buying a shell requiring some attention is not such a bad idea... I mean at least I know for sure there won't be any rot after I've replaced the affected area. The panels I've looked at are fixable, how ever like I say just that R/Q is my concern!

my previous car was a camparse so i cut the rear quarter off that for my gt. wish id just converted the campus and got it painted lol

Welcome back. Just had a breif read and it looks like your considering taking on a rotten project that needing both sills, both jacking points, a crosember, headlight panel and qtr repair and more than likely other bits and then paint. I presume you aren't taking on the work yourself? Personally, that ain't gonna be a cheap project, and that's before you get into what else it's gonna need after many years off the road. Either reshell into a campus or save for a bit longer and buy a better base to start with or I can't see it gettin finished, that's alot of work if you don't have the tools, even if it's 500 materials and 500 labour (which I doubt) thàts still a grand which could buy a better project and be further along with less time ànd effort ;)

To be fair, Ive spent some time pondering over the whole concept of this project. For obvious reasons the chance to rebuild and restore an electric blue was what attracted me. Yes in a frank way the shell is rotten. Perhaps just that little to much :( .

Not trying to put you off, just be realistic. There is always something suitable for a project, bare in mind if your planning oe, or close, then a ph1 could cost more trying to source and fit the usual good condition rare bits. Although restoring a car to how you want it is very appealing, the fun is driving it so most people only take on a project that severe if they have owned the car a while and attached, have all the gear to do the majority themselves or a decent budget to make it happen.
Just find something in the colour you want with a joblist that is copeable, by all means push the boundaries and get involved but nothing worse than starting something and never get round to driving it ;)

Hey Haz,

Completely understand your advice and it's advice from yourself and Tony that have helped me realise that my decision was right to end any dealing with said car. I just think everything weighed in made me step back and ask can I commit ex amount of time in restoring something that I may never get to fully finish! Especially being in the forces I dunno whether am coming or going at the minute accommodation wise. Really hoping for a black 5GTT:)
