hi, i have had a couple of 5's now but i have treated myself to this one. i cant take any credit at the moment for the work but it will is by no means a finished project.

the engine is only 2k old with a lot of uprated parts, the body has good paint and the interior is tidy with a nice set of flocked door cards

hope you like

thanks for the comments, i am so pleased with it and the detail to what has been replaced is second to none.

i think i agree i will leave the dash alone.

i am undecided about the wheels also, i am very tempted to get some standard wheels refurbed to complete the whole original look bar a little lower.

Is there any difference or pro/con to these instead of the normal dump valve?

I have hit a problem

i mocked up my cossie front mount pipes today but really think i prefer my original look with bread bin
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x222/boodle_01/20131108_131800_zps289c80d2.jpg

here is before
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x222/boodle_01/IMG_20121116_140941.jpg

i am annoyed at myself as i like all the front mount pipe layouts i look at but in front of me i prefer the normal ...... typical

Jonny5

Cut your telephone hose in half, insert a bit of metal pipe and rotate it round then put your airfilter where the old intercooler went.
Will fill the big hole nicely :)

bood
08-11-2013, 17:17
Good point that would help. although i thought if anyone you would be for the original look

i am going to ponder it as i am still not sure

Jonny5

although i thought if anyone you would be for the original look

True
Im at that point with mine where im wanting to improve on the o.e layout and do away with a few pipes to clean the look of the bay up, but how far from the original set-up can you go before you lose that o.e feel.
Its a balance between mods for performance or mods to make it look nicer.

bood
08-11-2013, 18:18
Yeah i can understand. you have the o.e setup looking great but there is still the night for you to continue.

Looking at the pics above i can see how cluttered the small pipes are that i have over looked.

You haven't added anything then :D

:smokin: i like your thinking,

i have just written my pipe work plans for a chap via pm and this may not suit everyone and i am sure there are different methods but here is mine

Air filter to turbo

.cut telephone hose
.100mm long 60mm od (from memory) insert pipe
.flip second half of the hose to face forward

Turbo to intercooler

.90 degree reducer 51mm (turbo outlet on mine) to 57mm
.57mm od x 100mm alley pipe
.90 degree 57mm id
.57mm od x 200mm alley pipe
.90 degree reducer 57mm to 62mm (think thats the intercooler inlet size)

Intercooler to carb top
.90 degree reducer 62mm to 57mm (think thats the intercooler outlet size)
.57mm od x 250mm alley pipe
.90 degree 57mm id
.57mm od x 200mm alley pipe
.humped silicon joiner pipe 57mm id (i used a humped one to allow for engine movement)

other jobs
.rad had to move one mounting hole to the near side
.i had to cut and extend the top rad hose (used 30mm x 100mm pipe)
.i had to extend my fan switch wires

Mods to fit the Intercooler
.cut off and weld up the 90 degree pipe on top of the intercooler
.cut the side supports off the mounting lugs to allow tight fitment to the renault cross member
.cut off the extra casting on the endcaps so nothing pertrude further than the front face of the intercooler

i used this company for my hoses as the put the swaged ends on the metal ones as well

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Metal-Alloy-Aluminium-Hose-Joiners-Pipe-Connectors-Silicone-Rubber-Select-Size-/270867577918?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&var=570047214941&hash=item3f10f73c3e

all this is to fit a 2wd cossie cooler, the 4wd is bigger

hope this helps any questions just shout

i have just had some black vac hose turn up so i can relocate the bleed valve to the scuttle tray then i still need to pull my finget out and move this header tank but i seem to be putting it off for some reason.

i am tempted to paint it balck and then do like Jonny done and get a black hose from the breather pot to take your eye away it.:scratch::scratch:

i have just purchased an old set of wheels, they are in good condition but desperate for a clean. to be honest i think i will give them a full refurb before putting them on.

the are oz superleggera's 15x7 and the weigh in at only 5.2 kgs per rim which is one of the lighter wheels available. my plan like i said is to refresh the grey fit new red decals and i am very tempted to wrap them all in toyo 888r's although maybe a little ott for what i use the car for.

oh and the pic is the car they came off no way would my brakes look that bad

Did the previous wheels have a lower offset? The OZ's seem to sit slightly further inside the arches. Maybe it's an optical illusion caused by the differing designs of the wheels.

The did slightly but only by 2mm. The spokes on the other wheels pertruded more where these are very flat so i think that gives that impression.

Thanks i am pleased with them. You and nad-5gtt have said what i was thinking, i already had the black paint i just had a thought of red this morning.

Thanks again for comments/help/opinions

The did slightly but only by 2mm. The spokes on the other wheels pertruded more where these are very flat so i think that gives that impression.

Ah right. Nearly said what about 3mm spacers in my previous post, lol :wasntme:

B18ftmojo5 thank you sir very kind of you. I would suggest these wheels to anyone, they are over half the weight per rim of my old ones.

Jonny cheers mate, i know its not like me to go more than a day without posting an engine bay pic and there have been a couple of changes ;) but i am in the process of cleaning up the inner wings so she would not be best pleased if i took a pic without her makeup on :laugh:

nothing much to update, i was going to paint the inner arches my self as the engine bay was never done sadly but after a polish they have come up ok although the paint finish is naff so i have decided next winter its gonna be engine out and have the bay painted properly.

sorry for the poor pic quality my new phone doesn't seem to take them as crisp once i load them into photobucket

for the time being i cleaned up my chrome swirl pot bracket and i have added a forge dump valve to the pipe work

it getting there thanks.

i know i really need to remove/move the header tank and swirl pot i just cant seem to get my head around removing that amount of coolant from an already small water system on an engine that i am asking 60-70% more from and it still being sufficient :brickwall:

Trevhib
17-02-2014, 19:49
I can't see that being a prob.

How much is being removed? It can't be that much.

:agree: the swirl pot can't hold that much. But can the swirl pot be removed with no ill affect. I'm curious as I'm thinking of doing this too.

Your probably right and I know it has been done enough times I am just a worrier.

And I also can't see how no swirl pot can be a good thing.

Then lastly  I don't want the header tank on either arch so if I move to the scuttle I don't like the new pipe runs :scratch: I am seriously tempted to gloss black my forge header tank :ashamed:

Brigsy has a very simple coolant system on his van, no coolant running through the carb, swirl pot removed etc and he beasts the living day lights out of it at 230hp and it's fine.

I wouldn't worry about it;) only reason i haven't ditched it all is because i quite frankly can't be arsed. I would rather spend my spare time driving it or fixing it when it breaks so i can drive it again.

bood
17-02-2014, 20:54

:laugh::laugh: ok ok,

i think i need to get a couple metal joiners, i have been looking at it this morning and my scuttle cover wont allow me to put the header thank underneath and i dont want to loose that as i think it keeps it looking neat so my new thought is gloss black the header tank and put it on the bulk head so everything is within and clear of the inner arches

Cars back home again..... Yay! !

No pics?????......2/10 for effort :)

bood
04-04-2014, 21:16
Haha I know very poor effort

It's been raised nearly 2 inches at the rear which normally goes against my vw grain but it's so much nicer to drive and now nose heavy instead of bum heavy.

The exhaust has been rehung so no more horrible vibrations

And the carb has been set up for 18 psi manifold with a 4 psi drop so 22psi carb top. It's still giving us a little jip by running rich on initial start up but there is a plan for the way forward.

The car was also given the going over of its life time and I was supplied a very comprehensive report with compression test results coolant system pressure check and every area of the car examined.

I do have a to do list now but I also know the eyes that examined the car are very experienced and have high standards which is what I liked.

Big thanks to Tony @ gt turbo spares for his efforts

new ride height pics

as much as i am a 'low car person' and this went against my grain it feels much better on the road as the weight is forward and much more fun on the country roads as before when it was dragging its bum on the floor it was doing the car no favours

I don't think there is any point of having it if I don't use it. The bike rack does have padding and anything that touches the paint does have a soft pad on.
