Hi folks I've been considering modding my 5 for some time now, and have a little spare cash so am I right in thinking the best way to go for fast road use is a afr gauge and a t2/25 turbo, and if so where is the best place to get these and how much is it likely to cost, also how hard will it be to set up as I'm in Scotland and there is not any places I can think off that specialise in carbs especially on a budget

Hi bud

AFR gauge off the scoff at efi parts £150 deliverd
T2/t25 someone on here could help you contact mike at gt spares see what he has laying around or cgb do turbos or someone else could help you and fit them both yourself it's very easy really just ask for help I know we have Scottish members if you get stuck.. Carb work once the AFR gauge is fitted is easy also..

Is it a good idea to use a t25 off a rover tomcat or is it a lot of effort?

Where would I get one off them? I've checked eBay but there's nothing that I can see

No, the Rover tomcat t25 A) needs modding to fit, and B) dont respont well to much boost without blowing up :D

Its a perfect start to modding with the afr gauge, perhaps with a larger bore exhaust/downpipe at the same time.
T2/25's are great turbos, i ran my old turbo technics T2/25 at 18 psi on a standard engine and it was great fun although once you start modding its really hard to stop so it all depends on how far you wish to go

Lots of great info and help on here for assistance on setting up the carb for good boosting :burnrubber:

im also from Scotland(where members are few), albeit a little further north but if you need any help with carb setup feel free to ask :D

I'll take you up on that, I'm trying to purchase the turbo and the afr before the money gets spent on other things so the exhaust will have to wait

No worries, feel free to pm if you are stuck, i have been assisted by many kind ppl on here so if i have learned anything i will past it on.
Exhaust ain't essential atm but keep an eye on the cladsifieds/ebay for an enlarged downpipe as they are often for sale and usually have the afr bung welded already.

Do you have any power goals in mind or do you just fancy a tinker to make things more interesting?

AFR gauge, boost set @ 1bar with carb mods, perhaps a bit of advance. Decent suspension (Koni) and a decent set of tyres :agree:

Pretty much all of us have been in your situation at some point and some good idea's have already been said..

If your going to start modding any engine then it has to be able to breath properly so you need to get rid of any restrictions such as a standard airbox/filter and standard exhaust, so the air flow is maximised. You'll pick up a full stainless for around £60 on Ebay and a filter for about £30.

Turbo wise you can either up the boost a little on the standard T2, great for a standard engine as it spools up quickly. If you want to go that little bit further then yes a T25 would be good, takes a little longer to spool up but it'll stay there for a lttle longer too. When you start putting bigger turbo's on then as advised other mods would be a benifit such as re-jetted carb, alloy intercooler, big down pipe etc...

In my last 5 I ran a modded carb with a 135 jet, front mount intercooler, Ported head, Garrett T25 Hybrid, 285 cam, big down pipe, full stainless and a filter. That was just over 5 years ago but I think technology has come along was since then  it was quick for it's day and regulary ran a 13 second quarter mile with a bit of spin off the line.

Do you have any power figures in mind you would like?

Hi I don't have any figures in mind aslong as its a bit faster than it is at the moment, I'm going to order the AFR today and will probably up the boost on the t2 till I source a turbo, ive also got a subaru thats 345bhp so I'm not looking for anything crazy out of the 5

Well that's the AFR gauge purchased, does anyone have a pic of where to weld the boss onto also where is the best place to put the gauge id prefer not to cut up the dash

Thundercat
22-08-2012, 16:37
Hi bud, i welded my boss approximately 6 inches from turbo elbow top of the cross over pipe. I also didn't want to mess with dash board and so opted just to remove the lift up flap and plastic inlay. This allows you to drill mount pretty much anything you want and when you want it standard again just refit removed parts. I presume you'll be fitting a boost gauge too as there's plenty of room there.
Not a close up shot but gives you an idea.

160-170bhp would be ample in the 5 just for a toy then, just sensible mods would be good. Get it over 200bhp and it'll give your scoob a run for its money ;)

I didn't mean to sound patronising before I didn't know if you had any experience with cars so I started with the basics :agree:

Had a thought what you might end up doing with the 5?

For a car that looks ok and is running fine its getting spoiled at the moment I'm collecting parts at the moment I've bought a door, bonnet, 2 sills, a welding machine and disks and pads all round for a restore but until then id like to see or feel where the money is going hence the performance mods, I'll start with the AFR and up the boost and see where I go from there

I'm going to be doing the exact same in the next fer weeks after getting my latest 5. Hopefully it's going to be abit of a beast after a full rebuild, already booked it in for a full paint in and out so all I have to do is strip it and then crack on with the engine whilst it's away.

Probably going to take some time I imagine, can't wait to get stuck in :)

Nearly got a phase one shell same as yours just over a year ago. I went to see it in congleton cheshire just down the road from me, a lad Al Gresty was selling it. I bidded £1300 on it and it went for £1550, Gutted...

Did anyone on here end up with it? D-reg if I remember, 6 digit plate I think?

(apologies for the hi-jack there )

One piece of advice that is not only free, but invaluble: BE CAREFUL if you're going to deal with Mike Wilson of PCS in Scotland. :coffee:

He's a bit of a dodgy geezer & has mugged off countless members in the past, so much so he's been banned from the RTOC but continues to trade on eBay. If you live close to him you may be able to visit him to get the parts, but beware of sending money in the hope that things will turn up in the post.

That shell was an absolute minter. Before Al actually put it on Ebay I was asked to rebuild the whole car for him with a fully re-built engine etc... but in the end he decided to Ebay it. I have worked on numerous 5's, 1 owner cars, minters, modified etc... But I must admit that shell was probably cleanest I had ever seen and I had been all over it. I do actually know where there is a brand new shell sitting that the lad won't part with, but for an actual origonal road going car in my opinion you will struggle to beat the condintion of the one you got your hands on :)

If only I had of know you were selling that :crap: Did it still have the wwf panda sticker in the window lol

Hi Billy,

I remember you & your mate coming to look at that 205 gti I was selling & spending more time having a good root round that ph1. like penfold has said I sold it on as I was in need of the cash at the time & to be honest my first love has always been the ph2's. Of which I now have another project, its in need of more work than the ph1 but has a better history & story behind it, also all the hard to find original bits are all there & in good condition, unlike the ph1 which had no interior wheels or engine.

http://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=29090

Glad to hear that youve got a project on the go too.

Anyway back to topic ha.

Ok folks the AFR gauge has arrived, I'm going to weld the boss onto the downpipe tomorrow and was going to wire the gauge into the cigarette lighter, I got the gauge that on the link above so am I right in thinking I only need to use 2 of the four wires, also what's the easiest way to feed the wires into the cabin? How easy is it to adjust the fuelling? I was going to adjust the actuator to up the boost to about a bar as its running standard boost at the moment
