I just bought a spare head at weekend but on closer inspection it seems to have a hairline crack between the valves on cylinder 1, Is it game over ??

we had this on a previous head and it didnt cause any probs as it didnt go thou valve seat, ya may have to remove the valves to double check to avoid disappointment when fitted boss

As above, check the valve seat isn't penetrated by taking the valves out.

Mine has been like that for years and no issues. I think it is just a stress relief crack and it hasn't propagated any further.:agree:

Inlet valve could do with replacing though...;)

mine was same, ran it at silly boost for ages, only removed it to lower the compression with a newer head

Cheers guys, I didn't want to build it up if i was a complete non starter,

I'll have a bash at removing the valves and see what it looks like.

Is that because they're slightly pitted ??

Yes. The pits are a propagation source for detonation. Also a weak spot!
