I had a rock hopper 2010 was a really good bike for the money only got rid of it for a more hard core bike for some downhill action well worth the money

You cant go wrong with a Specialized. I've had loads over the year and my current hardtail is a Stumpjumper carbon. If you don't want it for anything too hardcore then don't let the shop talk you into a full sus, it will be overkill and to be honest not very good for that sort of money. I also have a full sus but mainly use it for offroad rides over 50 miles as it's a bit more comfortable and those type of long rides tend to be at a slower pace.

One of the main things I would say to look for at this price range are hydrolic disk brakes as opposed to cable disks. To be honest, if you get into it, it will very much become like owning a 5 and you will find yourself upgrading bits as you go.

Now's probably a good time to buy as the 2013 bikes have just come out or about to come into the shops so you can get good deals on 2012 models. Also check out www.singletrackworld.com as you might be able to pick up a really good secondhand bike.

PM me if you want any advise.

Cheers

I bought a curveball at that price point 3 years ago now, a landrover mezzana

its an excellent lightweight frame, front sus only, and I opted for some decent lockout rockshocks on the front, cant remember the exact model but decent enough and I specced some Avid juicy 7 hydraulics for it as well, think it came to £650 on the nose and its been a great bike. it came with shimano deore XT gearsets as well so all the components are a good spec for the cash. and as said this was 3 years back so should be able to get more for your cash now!

only slight issue I have now is the rear pads are binding a bit, not had chance to look at them yet........ darn clio taking all my time and money :agree:

I have a Claud Butler Cape Wrath and love it, had it 4 years now and it's never let me down, if I didn't have that I would LOVE a Schwinn or Scott full carbon

Don't compromise on the size. Sit on as many as possible too to find what your most comfortable on. Evans seem to have a good rep amongst the various forums. Last years bikes get heavily discounted too so look out for those.

get the correct frame size to! bike fits are spendy like £100 - 150+ but worth it

defo on the hydraulic brakes, much much les maintenance.
I have hayes nines, I know there not the latest tech but plenty powerfull enough for me with upgraded pads, you should see the spokes bend on a downhill run!!!!

If I were you I'd get a decent second hand one. Id be looking at cannondale chase frame or Le-toy. Decent front sus from the likes of manatou (excuse spelling) like the Sherman's, and nice solid wheels can't go wrong with halo SAS rims and hope bigun hubs.

Like gary said spend your max on a second hand bike, i have a few good friends who do it, one races the other just has weekend fun. He bought a boardman for around £1000 and it was wrecked within 6 months. He now has a secondhand specialised he uses for the downhill stuff, i can find out the model and year if you want, its a highly recommended bike within the mountain bike community. My other mate has custom bikes that cost serious wonga.

If you know what your doing and dont pick up a lemon used is the way to go. Other than that if buying new look beyond the brand/status and go for an ownbrand bike from Halfords like the boardman or voodoo's or even the rockriders from decathlon. manufacturers who already have the popularity dont give you half the spec you get from the brands mentioned.

I dont work for the above "anymore" but another bike manufacturer, we just cant touch the spec these guys create as they are cutting out the middle man. Basically selling to the consumer at trade prices. We have to sell them to dealers who add on 30%-40%. As much as Halfords etc suck, its your best bet, come with a good warranty to..

Paid £550 for this puppy a few years back, would have cost £££££ to build, as mentioned above its like a gtt, you keep upgrading parts and throwing coin at it

Check out Kona, their bikes are great, I got a Blast to get back into XC riding a few years back and with a few upgrades its great to ride all day. Specalized are also very good, I have an SX Trail for freeriding. NS bikes for dirt/street, I've got a custom build Suburban 24". I've also got a custom build 26" for dirt jumping, based around a Giant XTC frame. oh and a bmx custom build based around a DK Flux frame. It safe to say I like bikes :)

Nice, I like Ribble's, nearly bought a Grand Fondo the end of last year. In the end went for a Planet X RT57 as I got it for a silly price through ride to work and introductory discount as it had only just been released. Will try and put a pic up if anyone's interested ?. Dont want to give people the hump with filling up the boards with pictures of my bikes although the road bike is a peice of art in my book :coffee:

I mainly ride my dirt jump trails in Byfleet, I used to live in west byfleet and me and my mates from byfleet still dig and ride there.

I moved to Carshalton in March, I only managed to buy a house off a RTOC member as well  turned up to view the property and there was an 11 Turbo in the garage. Hello Martyn if you are reading this...

There is a skate park in pollards hill I have been to a couple of times since moving in and also the new one in wandle park croydon.

pics to follow when i get home later

edit, st hellier skate park is 2 mins away from me but not that keen on it..

Yer the Planet X are v nice, bit high in price once you stick a nice groupset on for my budget. I'm also doing a bike to work scheme, can't say no!
I very nearly went for the MEKK poggio P20 but the ribble takes the win in the looks department.
