I thought after lurking around here for a number of years I would start up a project thread for my 5 restoration as the work is now well and truly underway !.

First of all a bit of history.

My love of the GT Turbo started in the 90’s when a friend of mine had a Tungsten grey which was fettled by Prima Racing. Some of you older members may remember this car as it was a demonstrator / competition car for Loud Wheels in Norbury. It had a huge Phoenix Gold ‘Son of Frankampstein’ amp and USD horns etc and the sub box fitted in the scuttle area. It was featured in some of the ICE mags in the 90’s. I think the amp was like 2 grand on its own and in total it was getting on close to £10k worth of kit!. Everytime me and another friend went out in this car we both had a huge grin when it came on boost, I then knew I had to have a 5.

So in 1997 having finished Uni and having to finally get a job the hunt was on for a 5 of my own to replace the 1.3 Escort I had been driving until then. Now there’s an old adage, never buy the first car you see. However in my case the first car I went to view was a 1989 Pearl white 5 GTT with one middle aged lady owner since new, full service history and a stack of paperwork longer than the bible. The car had covered around 40’000 miles and apart from a blowing exhaust and some laquer peel to the spoiler was perfect. £3800 changed hands a week later I had my 5. I remember thinking when I pick it up I’m going to drive sensibly but the first dual carriage way I came too I couldn’t help myself and booted it. From then on it kind of gets addictive.

The first thing’s I did was get a CAT1 alarm installed. Living in Fulham it was kind of a must. Actually I remember years later coming out of my house to see some guy, quite posh looking, trying to open the rear windows. He reckoned his had been nicked and wanted so see if it was his ?. Being 6’1 and about 15 stone a quick word in his ear and he soon buggered off. Then there was the other time some drunk / druggy though my bonnet was his bed and was trying to sleep on it. Anyway after having the car for a couple of week’s I took it down to GT Tuning in Dorset for a service. The car was given a clean bill of health by David and Roland and they actually commented it was one of the best std cars they had seen. So I left Dorset happy, knowing I had bought a good un, and somehow mysteriously a GT Tuning sticker had ended up on the boot ?. Surprised as I hadn’t asked for it and these days even more surprised they didn’t charge me for it !.

At the time I was living in London but working in Surrey so was racking up around 70 miles a day. Therefore many more trips to GT Tuning entailed to have the car serviced and also some small mods such as a dump valve ( yes the posh and expensive Bosch one !) and a few other shiny bits and bobs. Apart from clear lights I never really changed the appearance of the car. To me the Skeete and later Carisma bodykits were just too much and changed one of the things I loved about the car, its boxy look.

After a few years everyone started raving about Andy Cutler at GDI. His prices were certainly more attractive (read cheaper) than GTT so I took my car to him. One of the first mods Andy did for me was to raise the boost to 1Bar. Wow what a difference it was like regaining the experience you get when you floored it for the first time.

After an issue with GDI I then switched again over to the newly started K-Tec. I had always found David Kirk to be a nice guy when he was at GT Tuning so had no problem with the journey back down to Dorset to have work done on my car by him.

After a few years the car was getting old, and fairly worthless, so as it was my main mode of transport I started thinking what the hey and doing some of the work myself. I work in IT by trade but most of the mechanics are fairly common sense. Just to point out way back when we all believed the hype about GrpA this and that which the tuners talked about. People then started to realise that most of it was just off the shelf parts you could get from GSF ( or Andy Spares, showing my age now ! ).

Jump forward about 6 years to 2007and my 5, now with 160K on the clocks was starting to look a bit tired. Must point out it was still on the original turbo and head gasket so all this nonsense you read about 5's blowing head gaskets constantly is rubbish. I started thinking about restoring it but wanted to make the car as near to new as possible. Therefore I started the daily ritual of searching Ebay for parts and buying up what new parts i could within reason.

Whislt searching for parts one day I saw a 1989 F Reg Campus advertised in Reading for £95 BIN. As I was now living in Hampshire I thought it could be worth a look. Pile of crap for that money your thinking but no this had only covered less than 25k and been in the same family from new. So I went to have a look with the old man thinking something’s not right here but the car was as good as it sounded so I bought it without a second thought. In fact I gave them £100 quid as they didnt have any change :). This now allowed me to take my GT Turbo off the road for the restoration to begin. This was back in 2007 so its taken me a while to get to where I am now.

Not having a garage to use, its full of other rubbish, the restoration would have to be done on my drive. Therefore I wanted to make sure I had 95% of the parts I wanted before starting. I didn’t see any point bolting on nice new parts for them to be rusty again 6 months later and before the car was finished.

So that brings me up to where we are now. The car’s in the body shop having new sills and any other rust removed and repaired. Then a full respray in the original Pearl white. Gearbox is also away with The Master for a full rebuild. I have more new parts than Renault France tucked away at my parents house, actually having been to Mike’s he has loads more than me it just seems like I have tons of stuff.

Pics to follow and then I will try and give regular progress updates. I need you guys to give me a kick up the arse if I am slacking !. Plan is to have it all up and running by the end of the year. There is going to be a few top secret mod’s and little 'trick' touches, you’ll have to wait until you see the car in the flesh for those as I’m not giving anything away at this stage :)

Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed the history of my 5 ownership.

A picture of the car pretty much as it was before I started ripping it to pieces. For some reason I have no pictures of the car when it was complete. If anyone has a copy of the TV program that was done for Channel 5 many years back it may be on there.

I always though the car was fairly rust free, then I removed the kit !

This was the better of the two sides.

And here's a blast from the past for some of you other long time members,

Here's a pic of it stripped and ready to go off to the body shop. Looks pretty sorry for itself. The tailgate was shot and rusted from the inside out. I picked up a replacement from a Monaco years ago so I threw that on. Car is having sill's done, both inner (thanks Ashy for making these :agree: ) and outer's. Rear bumper mountings are being replaced and both jacking points along with any other rust that is present. Jacking points were OK but I thought may as well get them done anyway. The plan is to do everything once and do it properly. Was surprised to find no rust around the rear quarter windows which was a bonus and once the screen was out that wasn't too bad either.

A couple of quick pictures to show how work is progressing at the bodyshop. Hope to have the car back in a few weeks ready to rebuild. Note in the first picture the seam/joint has been left on the sill inside the bottom of the door shut so it looks like it did when it left the factory :agree:

Why I think of it here's a picture of the £95 quid Campus. As the lights were liked brand new I took the clear indicators off the GTT and swapped them over so I could use the orange ones for this restoration. Inside that thing was immaculate !. I sold it a few years back and got the 206GTI at the rear of this picture, what a mistake that thing was, no more a GTI than the Campus. That's gone as well now and I have a new'ish beetle cabriolet instead as a run around, yeah I know girl's car .

Sounds like a good project with some decent history.

I grew up in Hammersmith (Mum still lives in the same house) and have frequented some of the same establishments and fell for some of the same hype (GTT) although I always thought that Roland and Co were very approachable....

I was living in Odiham (not far from Farnborough) when I left for Australia and also remember Andy Spares in Reading.

Hope the project goes well and you can count on the guys here pushing you along as they have with me.

So this morning I though I would set about cleaning the gearbox casings ready for paint. As mentioned previously Colin (The Master) is rebuilding me a good box out of a couple I already had.

After about an hour with some degreaser I had one of the casing parts about 90% clean.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/SAM_0562.jpg

And then whilst doing the second half I found this crack !.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/SAM_0563.jpg

So the way I see It I have a couple of options.

1) Weld the crack up.
2) Go and get my other casing off Colin and clean that one up instead.

What's peoples opinions/experience here. Open to suggestions please.

I think I have a good spare sitting in the garage you can have for free, it will need bearings etc though....

OK, decided not to muck about with this. Spoke to Colin and going to get my other casing in a bit. Pain as I spend all morning cleaning these but cant be arsed with it causing an issue further down the line. Looks like an evening of degreasing for me tonight.

So a small update. I went to the body shop this morning. Both sills are now on and they just need to finish off the welding and then will be removing all the crud from under the car, making good anything they find, and then applying stone chip. They have also now fitted both rear bumper mount repair panels that Ashy supplied.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/MOUNT2.jpg

Whilst they are working under the car new brake lines are going to be installed. Has anyone replaced the metal fuel lines under the car ?. If so any recommendations.

As for me I need to finish painting my gearbox casings then get those back to The Master.

So a quick update to say not a lot has happened recently. Been busy with work and training for some marathon mountain bike events. Also been busy battling with my nemesis, our Grand Scenic DCI, I swear it goes wrong at least every other month. Went to the body shop yesterday and the car is still having the underside sorted so no pictures to share at the moment. However I did take delivery of this little lot last week off a fellow member. Whilst I am going for the OE look on the outside the engine bay is going to be somewhat different to the way it left the factory.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/SAM_0587.jpg

Job for this weekend is to finish getting the gearbox casing sprayed and returned to Colin for the rebuild. I also need to make a list of all the parts I have so I don't keep buying the same thing twice !. I seem to forget what I bought years ago and stashed away.

No real progress again. Went to the body shop and they assure me work on my car will be happening again next week. Some cheeky sod had wrote a D on the side sticker so it now reads GT Turdo. I have however been collecting more parts. Been trying for a while to get a drivers side (i think its that one) door handle. Local dealers couldnt get it and Mike tried as well but to no avail. Managed to track one down in Italy so I now have new handles for both sides :). Also got a host of other new goodies but won't spoil it by giving the game away just yet.

A question however. I am planning on running a T2/T25 turbo as big boost is not my ultimate goal and would like fairly low lag. Currently I have both Forge and GT Tuning T3 actuators. Any suggestions what would be most suitable ?.

Fingers crossed some new pictures of how the body work is progressing next week.

I picked up a spare cylinder head yesterday and upon inspection its stamped KTR and CTM 293. Do Ktec use CTM for their headwork ?. Anyone know what the 293 means ?. Also the valve springs appear to have some red paint on them. Uprated perhaps ?.

Brigsy
18-09-2012, 19:37
Red valve springs are standard. Ports might be fettled a bit?

markg
18-09-2012, 19:59
Cheers. I wasn't sure on the significant of the red paint. The ports do like they have been smoothed a bit so perhaps it has been fettled with.

I also picked up a spare turbo. I thought it was a standard item. Just compared it against the original T2 from my car and the exhaust side is different. It's stamped AN 13 HT28. The compressor side looks the same as the original. Again anyone got any ideas ?. The only reason I noticed it was different is because it has some unused holes where the elbow bolts on. To be honest I only got it to use when I run my engine in but if its a hybrid I might just stick with it for the time being, if it's any good of course.

markg
18-09-2012, 20:09
Just found some more numbers on the turbo. Compressor .48 and on the exhaust side 505 ? and 2414 I think. Must be getting old I cant read them properly.

Finally managed to get some free time this morning so painted the gearbox. Thats not primer it is going to be white !. I also couldnt resist chucking the chrome end cap on :). I will get that back over to Colin this week, work permitting, to be reassembled. When it comes back I will touch up any paint I missed :ashamed:.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/SAM_0604.jpg

Also got these from CGB in the week as a job lot. I polished my alternator a while back so these fixings should finish it off nicely. Once I have seen which bits I need I will put any spares in the classifieds cheap for anyone else that want to do the same.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/SAM_0602.jpg

Finally this turned up today. A brand new FPR which I was told are no longer available from Renault. I have some good condition ones but being a tart I wanted a new one. I figured the current one has lasted 20 years, so this one should too, which made the cost bearable.

It's been pointed out before, but the chrome tends to let things slip, alternators can lose tension and I think a few other area need watching.

Small update. I spent a couple of hours Saturday at the body shop getting rid of 20 odd years of dirt from the underside of the car so it's ready for under sealing. I also found a couple more small holes so they will be getting rectified. Sorry for the rubbish pics.

It is indeed, a standard cast manifold that has been chromed. CGB did these a while back. This is just my spare however as I have a new Ktec/Raceland manifold to fit when I build the engine up.

It's been a while so I thought I would give a quick update. Recently had a blood clot in my leg so that's slowed me down a bit. The body shop are still working on the car, although to be fair due to my leg I'm not in too much of a rush to get it back for the time being. Picked up some more parts and also had a chance to sort through all the new parts I already have. I was surprised to say the least and glad I started collecting parts when I did as some items would be near to impossible to get hold of now.

One of the next jobs is to start stripping the engine for a rebuild. I had 5 minutes the other day so thought I would whip the water pump off. Fail - At least half of the bolts snapped so they will have to get sorted when the head is sent off for skimming. As a reference here's the engine as it was when it was taken out. Looks pretty grubby but to be fair it was running fine despite the big mileage. It's going to get a full rebuild then painted white like the gearbox and treated to the chrome goodies and a full set of SFS hoses and many other new bits and bobs.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/SAM_0725.jpg

Once I strip the engine in the next couple of weeks if anyone wants the chrome rocker cover and yellow Samco's (there are 4 in total) pictured on the engine they can have them for the cost of postage. The rocker cover bracket to the right of the picture has come away at the bottom and it does have some rust. The Samco's are filthy but may clean up. If anyone is interested I can always upload some more pics plus you can't beat free :agree:

Alex
17-11-2012, 13:56
Seems to be coming along brilliantly. What are the plans for the engine build? keep it standard or uprate?

PS..... I'll have the cover and the Samco's thank you very much! :D Just let me know when you have them ready.

markg
17-11-2012, 14:18
Alex, Parts are all yours. Will let you know once they are taken off.

Plan is to keep the engine internals standard'ish. I have a vernier pulley I will be fitting but most likely will keep the original cam. Pistons and liners are perfect circle jobs rather than forged items. I'm not chasing big power I just want a reliable car I can use when I feel like it. That's kind of why so much will be changed for new.

I do have some new performance parts such as 2.5" downpipe, enlarged turbo elbow, tubular manifold, double cap i/c, lightened flywheel etc.... so hopefully they will free up a little more power. I will probably stick a mild hybrid turbo on as well but that's a little way off yet. I'm going to run it in with a spare turbo I have kicking about just in case there's any crud in the engine that damages the turbo.

Alex
18-11-2012, 08:44
Cheers mate :agree:

Sounds good. I've got Perfect Circle pistons and liners in mine and they're great - stand up to a lot of abuse on track so if you do decide to push things a little further at a later date they'll be fine.

Good idea re the turbo. I'd recommend a new braided oil feed with an inline filter. It's amazing how much crud comes out if a new build, even when you think you've been super clean building it!

markg
22-11-2012, 22:02
This week I have managed to pick up some more parts. The trouble with replacing so many bits is you then start looking at the most mundane items and thinking they are going to look rubbish against all the new parts and bodywork. So I got sot some new wiper arms today for that very reason. Not cheap and I could have painted the existing ones but just didn't think it would like quite as good. It's all starting to get a bit OCD but hopefully the end result will justify all the expense.

If anyone has any sources for new window glass I would be interested to hear about them. I can get the new rear quarters in green tint but struggling with front windows and rear tailgate glass. I have a new windscreen tucked away that I picked up years ago so don't need that. Although Renault still list some of the glass they cant tell me if they are green tint. The only way to find out would be to buy them and they wont refund it they are wrong :dearme:

Yet again not much has happened to the car. Bodyshop swear they will be making progress on my car again soon. In the fourth picture I posted in this thread you will see the drivers side door had a rather large rust scab. When I bought the car it was about the size of a 5 pence piece but being stupid I never sorted it and now it's pretty huge. Original plan was to cut out the rot on the door and weld in new metal. However I managed to get a replacement door skin which I am told wont be too bad to fit. Was a bargain £10 from ebay and I was surprised to find it's a genuine Renault part rather than aftermarket copy so hopefully should fit better too.

My hoarding of parts is continuing so can't wait to actually get the shell back and start bolting some bits on. I know the Rtoc like part's pictures so here is just some of the new parts I found when having a sort out the other week at my parents house. Sorry about the crap picture.

It's been a while since I last updated this thread. Bad news is still no car back from the bodyshop. Lesson learnt, don't get a mate to do the work for you !. Still I'm in no real rush as I am collecting yet more parts and looking to move house in the summer which should give me much more room to get this all bolted back together. Good news is I now have a rebuilt gearbox back from Colin. All bearings are new and Col used the gears out of three boxes to give me the best condition ones. Hopefully that should now give another 20 years of service without issues. I will give it another paint and get the chrome bits bolted on and post up some pics of the finished article.

As I said in a previous post it's all starting to get a bit OCD. I have a new center console, gear knob and nos red carpet  and was thinking it would be a shame to put some second hand switches for the windows and c/locking back in, yes it really is getting that sad :). So after some searching I found new switches in Germany and Spain. Next up was a new handbrake lever which I managed to find in France. I could have painted my old one but I never thought I would be able to get it factory fresh and it actually wasn't that expensive. I also found a new front wiper motor, pretty random thing to change but it was cheap and should be yet again one less part to fail in the future.

Fingers crossed we may have some pictures of a newly restored Pearl white shell in the near future... but don't hold your breath...

Still no car back to start bolting all the new bits onto so I started a few little jobs today in preparation of it's return. I got a Devil strut brace some time back off ebay but it had numerous scratches and marks as you would expect from a 20+ year old used item. Not content with how that would look against everything else in the engine bay I got out the wet and dry and started the rather boring task of getting rid of all the damage using increasing fine grades of paper. Certainly not the quickest job in the world but should look spot on once done and polished. I will get some before and after pics up once I have finished one of the pieces.

Before Christmas I managed to pick up a pair of front mats for £25 delivered which I thought was a bargain. I also had four of the rear mats from my old Campus which I have been using in the Scenic up until now. I gave them a clean up today using shampoo and Autoglym vinyl and rubber care. A bit of elbow grease and scrubbing with a toothbrush and they have come up pretty good. The rear mat at the bottom of the picture hadn't been done to show the comparison. I found the Autoglym cleaner made the mats pretty slippery so after leaving it to soak in for a few minutes I washed off the residue and they seem pretty good now :agree:.

I already have a set of Lucas branded lights but as I have read comments about some headlights fitting better than others I thought I would hedge my bets and buy these too.

If the weather is nice at the weekend I plan to get the gearbox finished off in between some other jobs. Will post a pic of that as I am hoping it will look pretty good when its painted up again.

Yeah I do have a couple of new parts :). Just started making a spreadsheet of everything I have new as I forget and keep buying doubles :dearme:. It also doesn't help that I don't have the parts at my house so cant quickly go and check what I have. I think it will be in the region of 1500 - 2000 brand new individual parts once I add it all up, hope the wife doesn't see that :). I will post up the spreadsheet once done. Despite being an old git my 5 was made before I could legally drive so really want it to be as near to new as possible as that's the closest I will ever get to a brand new 5.

Original plan was to get it finished for ND this year. However I still don't have the shell back and work is looking stacked until Sept so realistically it will be next year now. I do miss a good blast it in though, it must be getting on for 6 years since I last drove it or went in a GTT for that matter. Still the grin I get when I first drive it and it comes on boost should be priceless.

Still no car back  but I have been busy. Managed to get over to my folks house and inventory all the new parts I have collected over the years. As suspected in some cases I have bought more than one of things due to forgetting what I already had. Once the car is done any left over parts will be offered on here to members.

If anyone is interested take a look at the New Parts PDF here for the inventory, sorry about the blank pages not sure why that happened (and I'm too lazy to fix it)

http://www.rtoc.org/files/index.php?path=Miscellaneous/Project%20Old5kool/

This list is all the brand new parts (chrome parts are refurb'd in fairness) I have to fit when I finally get a car back. I thought I'd better make note of locations of where things are stored as I don't want to search through all the boxes again just to find something.

Note to anyone just starting a project. Document all your parts now, this lot took bloody hours to do...

Small update. Yet again still no progress at the body shop although they tell me it will be done soon. Not holding my breath on that one.

After repainting the gearbox it became fairly obvious the paint I used was going to be a nightmare. It was a slightly textured matt finish and any dirt or grease simply could not be removed. So I have now started to repaint it again but with a white engine enamel this time which should allow me to wipe any dirt and grime off.

I have also been rebuilding my new carb with chrome brackets. Just one more screw to get out and then I will post up some pics hopefully tomorrow.

Been fairly quite on the new parts front lately but I did pick up this nos header tank recently.

Old vs New carb. Chrome brackets and linkages fitted although I am keeping the originals in case I ever want to put it back to standard. Not sure about using alloy bolts to hold the carb top in place so they may well get replaced at a later date.

I went to the body shop today and was pleased to see work has started again. Subframe and rear beam are now off ready for cleaning and painting. The rear beam bushings have seen better days so a quick call to Mike and I should be getting some new rear arms.

Quick pic of the beam after starting to remove years of dirt.

This afternoon I finished off refurbing the inlet manifold. Originally I was going to polish the manifold however as you barely see it once fitted I thought my time will be better spent elsewhere. Therefore I painted it using some aluminum enamel vht paint and fitted chrome brackets, stainless bolts and new hose tails. I have a spare manifold so you never know maybe a job in the future to polish that one.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/IMAG0315_zps23261580.jpg

Then I fitted the new carb. Decided not to go with the alloy bolts to hold the carb top / lobster on so got some drilled titanium instead. Arguably a bit extravagant but as they are so visible I felt it justified the expense :).

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/SAM_0881_zpsc4ff9267.jpg

I then set about refurbishing the top mounts. I removed all the old rust and dirt then primed and painted. Still go the other side to finish.

Old vs new struts for comparison.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/SAM_0885_zpsc21a6277.jpg

Originally I was just going to get my oe springs re-powder coated as I didn't want to lower it. However the springs look in quite poor condition, not surprising really considering their age and the mileage. As the rear beam is being rebuilt I am in two minds now weather to lower it a little. Anyone got recommendations for lowering springs that only give a marginal drop, ideally 10 - 20mm.

Job for later today is try and hunt out some new shock boots/gaiters as mine have disintegrated and Renault tell me the part number is not valid. I am sure there must be something universal out there that will fit. Failing that the Mk1 Clio boots on Dialogys look remarkably similar, anyone had experience of trying to fit these ?.

I had some time earlier today so I went down the bodyshop to do a bit on the 5. The old sound deading in the boot was rather past its best so I set about removing it with a heat gun and scraper.

Before,

and after about an hours heating and scraping it ended up like this,

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/SAM_0905_zps32d1f7bd.jpg

I found a small hole in the boot floor so that will be getting addressed.

I also took my old steel spare wheel down to the blasters to be cleaned and powder coated. Will post up some pics when I get that back next week and new tire fitted. I have quite a bit of time at the moment so am hoping to make some rapid progress. Look out for more regular updates :agree:.

The Continental tyre despite being brand new is pretty old as I have had it stored away for years. As it's only the spare wheel it should be cool. I have some Uniroyals to use on the car and may change the Conti at some stage to something newer. Sadly the MXV was knackered so has been binned.

I have been fairly quite this week as I have been hunting for a new job. Looks like that is all sorted now so I can carry on with the 5 :agree:

First of all thanks to Tony (Fishead) and Mike @ GT Turbo Spares for sourcing the new rear suspension arms and also fitting them for me. The rear beam is now back in the bodyshop for painting and fitting.

After looking at the screen surround the rot was repairable however as said before I only intend to ever do this once so a new surround was sourced and yet again Mike came up trumps. I have dropped this to the bodyshop and hope I can get them to get it fitted next week for me.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/screen_zps2230eaa2.jpg

I also found some refurb front brake calipers pretty cheap on ebay. I did have a fairly good set but originally painted them red. To be honest the finish wasnt great and I now would rather have silver so decided to get new. If anyone has a new brake servo they want to sell then please let me know. It's pretty much the only part of the braking system that will not currently be replaced with new parts.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/SAM_0923_zps327a2877.jpg

From speaking to Tony earlier this week he has put the idea into my head that maybe a 285 cam and T25 are the way to go. I don't want a drag car just a reliable fast road car. To be honest that's probably the way I will go but need to do some more research. Happy to hear people experience of running such a setup, I will be using standard internals.

I cant actually wait to drive the thing but it's probably going to be next year now before it's finished. Think I said that in 2012 as well

Alex

Re cam/turbo choice. A T25 and 285 cam would be a wise choise although I wouldn't really want anything bigger for fast road use. What turbo do you currently have? A standard T2 @ 15psi with the TDC wires reversed makes for an excellent fast road car ;)

Hi Simon, Trim was from these guys - http://www.sealsdirect.co.uk/ but you can also get it from places like Car Builder Solutions.

As for refitting the shield to the tank that's a good question. The original fixings were knackered so I need to see if they are still available once I work out what they actually are. Plan B is to use nuts and bolts with washers either side but not tightening too much as to damage the tank. Whilst the tank is off I am also going to araldite the yellow bung. It didn't leak before but best to future proof it now whilst it's easy :agree:.

Water pump was a bargain for £11 delivered from ebay so bought as a spare as I already have a new complete pump. All were cheap but help to ensure I have enough spares to keep the car going for years to come.

As the original heater fan has a tenancy to squeak I thought I would treat my ears to a new one.

I have made a start cleaning up one section of the exhaust as a test. I will try and get a progress pic up later today if I get some more time to spend cleaning it up. Like most polishing tasks its not going to be a quick job but hopefully will look good once done even though you will never see it when fitted. Still it will make the MOT man smile once a year that someone was sad enough to polish their full exhaust.

A few more bits this week :)

Water pump was a bargain for £11 delivered from ebay so bought as a spare as I already have a new complete pump. I also picked up a new petrol cap and a life time supply of sump washers plus a spare head gasket set just in case its ever needed. All were cheap but help to ensure I have enough spares to keep the car going for years to come.

Nope, Euro Car Parts. Just need to dig out my old fan to ensure it's exactly the same.

Bugger, just seen they have a promotion on, so it's now cheaper than I paid earlier this week.

A few more bits and bobs this week. The two large boxes are the interior seals for the front windows. Renault tell me the O/S is no longer available but I managed to track one down in Italy. I would not have bothered with these but as all the other window seals will be new I thought I might as well do these too. There is also new clips to go one the refurbished rear beam which is hopefully getting painted next weekend. The original clips seemed a bit brittle so it made sense to replace as they only cost a few quid.

I managed to get a rare couple of hours in on the car this morning. Nothing major done but the subframe and anti roll bar have now been cleaned and dropped off with the media blasters. Below is a pic of how it currently looks. It doesn't look that bad from this picture but there is a small amount of rust and the other side is pretty ropey from years of catching on curbs when parking. I was surprised to find that both arms appear to be original as they had a 1989 date code. I certainly don't recall ever replacing them so hope the new ones will last just as long.

Si, I think there is a very good chance yours will be done before mine. Still I do seem to be making some progress.

I got the subframe and anti roll bar back from media blasting today. Very happy with the results and I think it was worth doing to ensure we get a good finish.

The old bolts holding the arms on had welded themselves to the bushings so we managed to cut those out, thank goodness for air tools.

Few more bits and bobs this week as well..

We are getting closer. The body shop now has the paint for my car so we should have some pictures of painted parts next weekend :agree:. They are going to paint some of the smaller items first so we can check the colour match before doing the shell.

A few more odds and sods this week but nothing exciting.

I managed to make some progress on the subframe this morning. In the previous posts you can see what it looked like before and after media blasting.

First of all the subframe had been primed and a guide coat put over the top. I then set about rubbing it back to get as good a finish as possible. My philosophy is simple, the underneath of the car should look as good as the top.

Here is a picture of it rubbed down ready for paint.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/IMAG0399_zps55988fcb.jpg

Then it was time to get spraying, not by me as I wanted a good job so left it to the professionals. First up was the base coats.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/IMAG0401_zps3f4f2b65.jpg

This was followed by the Pearl coats and then lacquer.

And here you have a finished subframe in Renault Pearl White.

Still got the arb, suspension arms and assorted brackets to paint and then the subframe can all be reassembled

A few more new parts. I noticed when stripping the rear beam that the original plastic disc protectors had cracked around the bolts holes. Rather than putting those back on I thought I would get some new ones. From speaking to Mike it seems that Renault have changed the original plastic ones to a replacement metal disc protector which Mike was able to supply. These are the last set so I am told so yet another part that is now nla. Being metal these are ripe for some colour coding, no prizes for guessing what colour !. The TDC sensor was only a fiver from ebay so a useful spare to have for the future. I now have some nuts and bolts etc on order so next week should see the freshly repainted subframe put back together.

I've got quite a bit done at this end, parts wise I'm done. Car is not back yet but basically arranging everything so that its a bolt on job when it returns.

Ordered my final bits this week from Renault, also got the wheels being refurbished and purchased the uniroyals.

Was thinking about updating my thread but it would take so long to bring it up to date.

Love the collection of new parts for the front sub frame. I'll PM you a link to the work being done on the 5.

If the weather is as predicted for tomorrow I should get some time to do polishing of parts. Expect some pics of shiny bits tomorrow evening. :)

Cracked on with some polishing jobs this morning. It must be the most boring task ever !. Still I think it's worth the effort in the long run. Rear strut brace and one section of the exhaust is now done. Further up this thread you can see what the exhaust looked like before. It wasn't bad but I knew it could be better :ashamed:

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/IMAG0418_zps33374c4a.jpg

After polishing the brace it would have been a sin not to use new nuts, washers and bolts.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/IMAG0419_zpscfcdfdd3.jpg

I might carry on with the rest of the exhaust this afternoon, 3 sections left to do. No matter how though there seems to be no quick solution with polishing stuff. So far I have found the best method is to use a scotch pad, or wet & dry for any major marks. Follow this by a machine polish and then finish it off by hand used Autosol or Peek.

Went over to do some work on the car this morning. We were going to get both the door skins fitted. Upon removing the first door skin we found some rot at the bottom of the door. Pointless fitting the skin without that first being cut out and replaced so that stopped play for today. I was quite surprised how easy it was though to remove the old door skin though.

Also been playing with a few bits recently. I have a new copper core rad but thought I would give one of those ebay special alloy rads a go. I know people have asked about these before, I think it was around the time of the Koni group buy, but I have found some new shock absorber gaitors and bump stops. Once I confirm these fit I will post up the part details.

I saw the Koni's in the club shop Trev but only really need the fronts. However if I go the Koni route I may just buy a full set as it's probably cheaper than buying just the fronts elsewhere. At the moment I have 3 new pairs of rears shocks, Koni, DeCarbon and KYB so really need to decide which to use and sell the others on.

Was just having a tidy in the garage and found some more bits :ashamed:.

It's getting closer to me getting the car back :). I went to the bodyshop and progress is being made again.

Both door skins have now been fitted. The only rot was at the bottom of the N/S door and that has been cut out and repaired.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/IMAG0476_zpsc7179738.jpg

The scuttle area is now repaired. I always wondered where the leak was on the drivers side. Turns out there was a hole under where the washer bottle mounts. The windscreen surround has all been cut out and the new one just need fixing into place.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/IMAG0471_zps7f55cab3.jpg

Battery area in the scuttle was pretty rotten so its all been cut out and fresh metal welded in. New battery tray ready to bolt in.

77 00 679 693 is the part number. No idea of retail cost as I got this and the water pump from a chap on ebay. I bought one years ago and think it was about £15. I saw on a French site there was some potential issues with Renault supplying incorrect length dip sticks but this one seems OK compared to my old one. Hi Si, We managed to get the old ones off cleanly although I am not sure if I am going to use them. In fairness my bodyshop told me the same thing but personally I quite fancy a clean painted look in the boot rather than the carpeting. If it comes to it I may just get the full sized arch covers from a later model.

Carried on today with trying to remove the sticky residue from the n/s wheel arch. Still not quite finished but I got bored and gave up. Another hour should see if complete. Also the replacement tailgate has been trial fitted. Need to now bond the spoiler on before we paint it. Glad I got this tailgate as a spare all those years ago as the original was totally shot and this one is 100% rust free.

Trevhib
17-08-2014, 12:51
I would paint the tailgate and the spoiler separately and then use double sided tape to secure it. That way both items get painted on all sides. Sticking the spoiler on, it's easy, you can't tell and if it's done right it will never come off of its own accord but you will always have the option to remove it in the event of a problem or wanting a change.

markg
17-08-2014, 16:32
Hi Trev, I was going to do it that way until reading on here a few weeks back about the paint on the spoiler potentially cracking if you paint it off the car and then fit it. To do with the spoiler being so flexible I believe. I will be making sure they paint it all however before it gets stuck on. That's the nice thing about the car being stripped down to a shell, they cant cut corners as you will be able to see if any hasn't been painted. I'm a bit anal about these things and in my mind the inside should be as good as the outside even though you will never see it.

Trevhib
18-08-2014, 09:32
Good stuff Mark :agree: Whatever you do, I know it will be top quality.

I don't know what the painter did to my spoiler in terms of the type of paint or the way it went on but it never appeared to be fragile or susceptible to cracking. Maybe I just got lucky, though that would be a first :D

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/Mobile%20Uploads/20140819_153734_zps0itfeiiv.jpg

So I gave the new radiator end tanks a quick polish as the factory finish wasn't great and it now looks a little better. All new stainless fasteners fitted, I hate seeing rusty bolts, and thread locked so nothing works loose in the future. Just need to find and fit the rad fan switch and this can be packed away again ready to be fitted.

Finally managed to get rid of the remaining sticky rubbish on the rear wheel arches from where the oe sound deadening had been fitted.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20140906_092207_zps0hxql8in.jpg

We then set about filling the repaired areas so we get a nice smooth paint finish in the boot.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20140906_122725_zpsop9gigqk.jpg

Then it was a case of rubbing it all down. It probably needs going over again but not looking too bad so far. We still need to put the seam sealer on to give it a factory look.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20140906_131532_zpsjnvmgfwc.jpg

The other side has been filled but needs rubbing down. I also still need to sort the boot floor. Its going to have sound deadening fitted but there is a couple of repairs that need tidying first.

And also thanks to Mike@GT Turbo Spares for sorting me out a new spare wheel cage this week.

Small bit of progress today. The other wheel arch has been rubbed down although it all wants another skim to get spot on.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20140913_110618_zpsrkgudlw5.jpg

I then rubbed down the repairs to the boot floor.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20140913_105645_zpsthlh0nc1.jpg

Some sound deadning trial fitted to ensure you cant see the repairs. I need to order a larger sheet however so I can do it in one piece.

Project looks amasing. How did you get fan frame to fit without fan touching rad? Got a problem on mine at moment needs about three washers so fan will clear?

markg
14-09-2014, 21:47
Hi James, I didnt need to use any washers to space the bracket away from the rad. Where is the fan catching, all the way around ?. Perhaps you could pull the bracket to tweak it slightly ?

Jimmy5
14-09-2014, 22:04
It just catches on the top lip of the rad, if I mount the frame flush then the fan is touching the radiator lip. Rads a Valeo OE one so its a tad puzzling.

OK, so we have a bit more progress.

Windscreen surround has been cut and spotted into place. Just needs tidying now.

All the way back on page 2 I mentioned some new rear suspension arms I got from Mike (GT-Turbo-Spares) and how they had very slight surface rust but that didn't matter, and actually suited me.

And here's why.....

Pearl White rear beam to go with the subframe :)

Just got off the phone to Mike and he is going to sort me out with some new fasteners so we should have the car rolling again next weekend...

As you have probably gathered if you've been following this thread I don't mind buying a few parts :ashamed:. In fact I quite enjoy trying to track things down or get a bargain, it's all a bit of a challenge. I'm not saying too much until it's in my hands but I have one of my all time holy grail parts on it way to me from overseas. In well over 5 years of hunting it was the first time I had seen it for sale so had to snap it up. Don't want to jinx myself so pics will be up once its in my grubby mitts...

Anyway for the time being here's a few more mundane bits I have picked up recently. It seems things like genuine Purflux filters are getting much harder to find so I grabbed one as a spare as it was pretty cheap. I must admit if I was starting my resto from scratch today I would probably be going down a different path to OE+, or whatever you want to class it as, because lots of new original parts are getting so hard to come by.

Renault did supply subframes in an off white colour at build when models were new. My old 21 Bob had a subframe in this colour that was an F registration. However why the majority were black I don't know.

Not much of an update. Still no car back

Picked up some bolts from Mike to refit the rear beam and shocks. Still waiting for a few more as may as well replace them all. Also managed to get a genuine Renault air filter for my parts stash. I should have enough spares to last me a good few years once the car is finally finished.

I mentioned previously about trying to get a large piece of sound deadening for the boot. After purchasing some from eBay that arrived with numerous cracks these guys came up trumps -http://www.woolies-trim.co.uk . Admitedly it cost more but I now have a good single piece to redo the boot with. Once painted I don't think you will be able to tell it's not OE, I quite like the diamond pattern looks Renault'esqe.

It's not a competition dude. The two main things in my opinion are,

1) Build the car YOU want.
2) Then use the damn thing, too many people seem to spend an age restoring them and then they appear for sale shortly after.

Ages back I mentioned I was polishing up a Devil strut brace. As polishing must be the most boring job known to man I kind of put that on hold until I could be bothered to get back on it. I spent another hour today and now have one fixing nearly complete. Hopefully you can see the comparison between the two in the picture. The brace was in quite poor condition as you would expect from something 20+ years old but its come up OK.

Anyone know if Devils were highly polished when new ?. All the ones I have ever seen are quite a dull finish but that could just be through age.

Small bit of progress. The underside of the car has now been seam sealed ready for stone chip to be applied and then paint. Sorry no pics didn't have my phone with me.

Also picked up a few new parts. A gearstick rebuild kit and a spare wiper intermittent relay. Looking on the web these relays are no longer available and were big bucks when you could last get hold of them so I picked it up as a spare. I think I also have the rebuild kit for the bottom half of the gear knob assembly somewhere so all in all it should hopefully feel like new.

Picked up some mundane bits this week. Mike sorted me out with a couple more genuine oil filters, you can never have too many ;)

I was surprised to find the radiator / top hose clip was still available from Renault. Don't recall my car ever having one fitted so I grabbed one. Judging by the old packaging this has been in stock some time.

A few more new parts this week. Thanks to RTOC for sorting out the fuel relays, great to have a spare :agree:. My rear view mirror had started to go brown in the corners so I wanted to replace it. I couldn't believe how cheap a new one was from Renault, cheaper than second hand on ebay. Just need to find the old one to make sure it's the same. I also got some new grab handles. We have some progress...

I went to see Matt and Callum at the body shop this morning and the underside had been completely stone chipped and loads of seam sealer to stop any water getting into panel gaps.

This is how it looked

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20150523_110201_zpse55vocmh.jpg

Then then told me they were getting the underside painted pearl white to match the top today so I hung around to get some pics.. The pearl coat was still wet hence the shine on the pictures. Just needs to be lacquered now and we can spin it back over and get the subframe and rear beam back on. Then the top side can be done and I should get it back :)

Ace bud :) you don't know how much I would love to do this instead I'm doing it on axcel stands and on my back my inners are shot and my rear jacking points too  keep up the good work :agree: the only thing I will say is don't use seam sealer on the drain holes along the inner sills that's what happend to mine the guy who did the new sills thought he was doing right well ten years on after I took the seam sealer off the inners were gone because it has held the water in and rotted them away. Seam sealer isn't all it's cracked up to be if used too much. Now I have to have new sills again everywhere they didn't use it after 10yrs is still mint..

Still need to get a few bolts before I can get the rear beam, subframe and suspension etc bolted on so the car can be wheeled into the booth for painting. After not buying much for a while I found some interesting bits lately so have been spending again. Some of these are in anticipation of another project I keep thinking about. Not going to say too much until it happens.

New clock for the dash was a nice find.

As always Mike came up trumps for the bolts I needed to put the beam back on.

As anyone who has been following this will know there was no way the old rear discs would be going back on so it was a case of pushing the new bearings into the discs.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20150627_095158_zpsyg99gc72.jpg

A word of advise. The circlips supplied with the new bearings seemed slightly too large so I took the circlips from the old discs instead which fitted much better. The lesson being don't throw anything away. Old discs were K-Tec drilled but to be honest I couldn't tell any difference and I think they had actually warped slightly so I just went for bog standard solid discs this time round.

Old vs New discs

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20150627_103619_zpshg4hpgga.jpg[

After spending an age cleaning up the spacers that fit behind the discs the new discs were dropped into place. Only hand tight currently as they need to come off again next week when the disc protectors are painted and fitted.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20150627_113025_zpsbz4juhaa.jpg

A couple of weeks back I got an email from ebay with a 20% off code. Would have been rude not to use it !. So after much deliberation I went for a Piper 270 cam. With the discount it was £128 so about the cheapest I have seen. As I'm not really going to be running a big turbo I felt it was probably the best compromise. Whilst I was at it I got a new Rheostat from Bob as well. Nothing wrong with the old one but it seemed a false economy not to change it whilst the heater box is currently out.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20150627_121553_zpsnememeha.jpg

I'm currently working on something a bit one off whilst reconditioning the alternator. Pics to come if it works out as hoped !.

I managed to get the rear beam all bolted back on properly today and also fitted some new De Carbon shocks. The rear disc protectors had been painted, but are slightly the wrong shade, however for the minute I will live with that as I wanted to get the rear sorted out so we can get it rolling again.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20150711_113820_zpssrxqxeye.jpg

Then I hit a problem. The disc on one side all bolted up fine but on the other side no matter how hard I tighten it there is some play. I put the old disc back on to check and its fine so I can only think its an issue with the bearing. So new bearing has been ordered and will try that next week. That's kind of stopped play for today but not so bad as I'm doing the London to Brighton night bike ride this evening so means I can get on sorting out stuff for that rather than doing it as I'm rushing out the door as normal.

Some progress....

Fixed the problem with play in the rear wheel bearing. New bearing from CGB and it seems OK now. However nothing is ever easy is it. Taking the nut back off resulted in it getting jammed. Eventually got it off but messed up the threads on the axle. Managed to clean it up and get the new nut on but need to replace it really. Spoke to Mike and he is on the case to see if a new one is available.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20150718_125812_zpsr0elyp80.jpg

Pic of the rear beam all fitted from underneath..

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20150718_130322_zps5vubhwji.jpg

So next up was to fit the subframe back on. Word of advise the nuts which fit into the subframe clips are no longer available from Renault so make sure you keep your old ones.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20150718_133539_zps1335l35v.jpg

Then it was time to put the new suspension arms on which had also been colour coded..

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20150718_142928_zpsl8zbg3ry.jpg

Followed by the suspension. Hub still to be painted but just wanted to get the car rolling so they can finish the bodywork...

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20150718_155023_zpshdtitq2h.jpg

And mission accomplished. We now have a rolling car again...

No work on the shell today so have been sorting out parts for the rebuild.

Only the other day I was looking at the price of alternator bushes and wishing I had bought some a while back when they were cheaper. Low and behold I found these earlier in a box with other stuff.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20150725_112247_zpsyaoyw7ol.jpg

A smear of washing up liquid later and new bushes fitted to the chromed alternator bracket.

AI have been getting all my fastners sorted out in preparation to start rebuilding. Theres loads more genuine Renault ones but need to dig them out and more importantly remember where they fit.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20150725_132938_zpstbchbvqp.jpg

Also I found some more rocking horse poo hidden away !. Sadly not been available from Renault for some time now. Looking at the sticker I bought this back in 2006.

I also found these tucked away :) Crazy to think how much I paid back in 2006 compared to what they sell for today.

A little progress. The roof has now been taken back to bare metal and ready to be sorted prior to paint. The paint on the roof has always been quite poor, I suspect a bad repair job when the sunroof was fitted. Therefore taking it back to bare metal seemed the best option to omit any further issues in the future.

No exciting purchases this week but did pick up a spare inner windscreen rubber cheap and the unopened bulb kit was a nice touch to have in the glove box.

I did briefly think about getting rid of the sunroof. However to do it properly meant a roof swap which is a lot of work. Plus despite all the new parts I still want it to be my old 5 when it's finished.

Still no car back but they have started prepping the bodywork so hopefully not much longer now.

As always picked up a few more goodies ready to fit.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/20150905_151038_zpsvcaczwe8.jpg

Phase 1 grill badge just in case I decide to fit a ph1 grill or even buy a Phase 1 in the future. Thanks to Mike for supplying this. I picked up that new fuel tank heatshield on ebay last week. Although I have already refurbished my old one there was a couple of holes in places where the rust had gone through the thin original metal. Hopefully this one will fit OK and plus its White which is a bonus !.

These I thought were a bargain !. A set of workshop manuals for £15 delivered. I already have the one to cover the gearbox so these may well come in handy when putting the old girl back together.

Some more goodies... I found the wing mirror in Germany, I just need to find a new genuine Renault N/S one now. The door fixing kits are pretty good including hinges, pins, bodykit rivets, gromits and plugs etc etc.. More obscure parts on the way as well. This parts gathering is really turning into an obsession :)

Hi Chris, thanks for the kind comments. Door kits were from the link below although it may be worth asking the local dealer if they can still get them, part number is in the link as well. If you contact the seller I found he was happy to post to the UK.

Cool kit!

What are the rivets for? And those funky spring clip type things on the right?

markg
11-09-2015, 14:37
I believe the spring clips are for a model with door mouldings and the rivets hold those clips on. However the rivets look the same as the side skirt clip ones on a gtt so that's a bonus especially as they are so expensive to buy.

So a bit more progress has happened. The guys in the body shop wanted the rear bumper, arches and lights as they weren't that happy with the rear quarters. To be fair even though they have had my car a very long time I am happy that rather than just knock it out to get rid of it now they still want to do it properly which is all I have asked for from the beginning.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee492/mark_garner25/Mobile%20Uploads/20150912_122349_zpsyykc3xku.jpg

It seems like no post from me would be complete without some more new parts pictures :) Picked up a pair of front bump strips and a telephone hose from a person in Cyprus. Although my engine bay will be far from OE I would like to have all the new parts to put it OE if I ever wanted to in the future. Still waiting on a few more obscure bits to turn up.

Mark am loving this thread quick question on the rear beam, I have attached a pic of yours the bits with the arrow on how is it attached to the rear beam?? is it bolted on??

markg
21-09-2015, 21:51
Hi James, If you mean the part the caliper bolts onto then I believe that is held on with Torx bolts. If you mean the axle the hub nut goes onto then I dont know yet as I havent got a replacement axle which reminds me I must contact Mike and see how he got on finding a replacement. Does anyone know if the axle is removable ?.

The obsession continues, more new parts .

I know people moan about parts no longer being available from Renault but occasionally they do surprise you with obscure parts. For example the gear stick linkage and the plastic cover that goes between the door and the door card. Only one side is available now but at a tenner it's a bit of a bargain really. The fact it's in the really old Renault packaging makes me think they couldn't have been that popular as this must have been on the shelf for what 20 years ?.

I was particularly pleased to find a new bonnet lock and cable. Unavailable from Renault so I am told but I got these from France for about £20 the pair. As I always say if you keep looking long enough you will find it eventually.

Hi Webber, Chrome parts were from an old member on here that had bought them originally from CGB but never fitted them. Bob at CGB used to sell a lot of chrome parts a few years back but sadly it now seems the only way is to get them done yourself.

Bodywork is still not finished but some more work has happened. Stopped by the bodyshop today and all the repairs are now finished so the shell is 100% rot free. Door and wings have been temporarily fitted back on so the bodywork can be preped and panel gaps checks to ensure everything fits correctly.

A few more parts, the trim above the rear light was a rare find, not seen a new one before, just need to find the other side now . The plastic box is all new torx screws. No point putting the old marked ones back on :). Original turbo heatshield just in case I do ever decide to go full OE in the engine bay.
