Cheers! Just interested if I can use its original french plate, etc....
This one is going to be a bit of a project....;)
With any luck anyway!
I expect its the same as the other way round and importing into France (Adam's parents recently did this when they moved to France) . You usually have a few months to switch the plates over/change headlamps to RHD if required, new MOT etc and register in the UK
AFAIK, UK law states if your car has foreign plates after 6/12 months whatever it is, then you need to have the car insured in the country of origin also.
I've just had a read and cars over 10 years old need an MOT, anything under 10 years old need a full SVA test doing. Here's a good thread on it: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=439572

Cheers dawno, this is a 1960's thingy.
Yep, saw that pistonheads thread when I googled importing a car from France.
i just bought a kangoo off a guy who has a 2000 scenic that he registered on Uk plates from france - he goes from country to country.
apparently you need to goto an MOT station and take off the reg plates outside - so the MOT place has to use the VIN number. - so as it gets an MOT on the VIN you can then go and register in the UK more easily ( or summat like that?)

Cheers sparkie.
:smokin:
For importing/re-registering Whitey, the DVLA told me I need to fill in a V55/5 form.
As Sparkie said, you can get an MOT carried out on the VIN number, and likewise for insuring the car - Not sure about the insurance certificate, but the DVLA will defo want to see the MOT certificate.
A 'receipt of sale' from the owner is probably a good move, and it'll probably make life easier if the seller gives you the French log-book/their V5 equivalent as well, as the DVLA may also request that.
