Low temp thermostat and fan switch

Why do you not want your car at normal operating temp?

It sits too high for my liking, i'd rather bring the temp down a touch, especially when sat in traffic.

Also.. my fan switch is knackered as it seems to stick so it needs replacing with a new one.

At the very least i'd like a low temp fan switch, might drill a small hole in the standard thermostat.

I used to drill my stats but on long motorway runs it used to run to cool. Best to replace the oe equipment and make it run properly.

It does run properly, I just don't like how high the fan kicks in when stationary, I'd rather it came in a little sooner

I'll keep the standard thermostat in that case, but i'll get a lower temp fan switch (or at least one that works properly and doesn't stick)

Just keep the o.e stuff and save your money. The fan will be on/off all the time with the low temp switch and the engine wont warm up properly

^ This, I have a low temp rad switch on mine and the fans are on nearly all the time, Pisses me right off !!

I have the pro alloy intercooler in front of my radiator so i thought i'd need the low temp switch but even when i'm in traffic i only get in between 2nd and 3rd mark on the temp gauge.

Also have you checked the cooling system to make sure its running efficiently before changing stats and switches ?

Cooling system is fine. The fan cuts in on the third mark as you would expect, but according to the guide on here anywhere over that mark is head warping territory, so i'd just really rather bring it down a touch for peace of mind.

id put money on the fact that the needle position on the gauge isnt quite the may west. ive tried loads of gtt clocks in my cars and the difference between temp gauges differs....never take it for gospel

Why dont you fit a switch which will bypass the thermostat?

Have the switch inside the car and you can flick it on and off as you please, this will give you what you want as well as letting the stat do its job.

Just saved you a few pennies as dont need to replace stat!

Do you mean a switch to turn the fan on so you dont need to worry about the temp fan switch putting it on too late. Get it right with the temp switch and you dont need to worry about switching on anything.

I would use a normal thermostat mate, the third mark isn't as hot as you think its only around 90degish so not even close to warping the head if it went over it.

I would only worry if it started going over that line close to the vertical mark and the fan didn't kick in, if its comes on just below the third mark and comes in as i should then i would leave as it is :agree:

Cheers for the help, looks like the guide on here is wrong then.

I need a new switch anyway as mine sticks so i'll try the lower temp fan switch and see how we get on. Would rather it kept the oil that little bit cooler when commuting as i'm going to need to use it for work whilst my other car is being fixed.

Keeping the oil cooler on a daily driver is probably a bad thing you want it up to working temp as fast as possible? I agree with mart the third line (3/4) is nothing to worry about, ive had the gauge vertical on track in the van no probs.

It's only the stock oil cooler so probably not very efficient.

Chunk - mine runs on the third line in traffic and between 2 and 3 on the motorway/driving. Don't worry about it man. Want the engine oil nice and warm so it can do its job properly!
