View Full Version : Intermittant speedo
My speedo is intermittant on the 5, jumps about all over the place.
I've replaced the lower section to the gearbox and that hasn't cured it, is there a common place for the wiring to go on the run to the clocks?
Might rip the old wiring out and make up a new loom to the clocks so it's all fresh

mine was like this because the cable had melted :S

Was the lower section tested and working?
Yeah it was indeed. Exactly the same behaviour than with the existing speedo cable I removed, so it's definitely not that
I checked the cable and it hasn't melted or damaged at all, I guess the wiring must have broken down in the cable somewhere. I'll have to pull it out and replace the wiring.

I went through the same process. I eventually cured it by bending the clip that holds the sensor in. It wasn't quite holding it in tight enough. Sometimes it would work and sometimes it wouldn't.

This, mine started to go wonky again and was a case of just pressing it in more firmly.
Good shout.
It seemed to be held in pretty well but i'll try that.
Thanks.
when i had issues with this it was always the instrument panel plug end,i have left the two torx screws out and when it kept playing up i used to remove it whilst driving (not recommended) :D and push it back in,but have played about with the plug and it fits tighter now!!
:agree:
Well i've got it working now.
Got the car up on the ramp and the little bolt was loose, I must have forgotten to tighten it properly after re-fitting the new sensor.
I removed the retaining clip and put it in a vice and hammered the two prongs in a bit to put more pressure on the sensor. Re-installed and got the bolt nice and tight and the clip is now pushing against the sensor pretty well.
Took it for a spin and the speedo seems to be working perfectly now :)
Thanks!
