Hi all i hope this is not serious , it was driving fine yesterday,
I drove to work today and as soon as i slowed down at the end of the road i hear a noise i havnt heard before ,
It drives as normal but when i take my foot off the gas with the revs dropping i hear a constant knocking defo from under the bonnet, its loud but not very loud , it sounds almost muffled or dul, like you would expect if it was coming from inside the engine.
The noise stops when i depress the clutch or put my foot back on the gas.
no noise at idle, but loud tappets when reved.
It might just be me but it seems to be "popping" more than it was now too when slowing.
There is a knock if i lift the clutch too fast.
I have given the manifold , turbo , downpipe all a riggle (cold) doesnt seem to be any play.
All ive done with it this week is change the front brake pads.
could it be as simple as a wheel bearing ?
Any ideas ?
Thanks.
Im supposed to be driving it back to England in September

My mates 205 did this thought it was the bottom end. Turned out to be the gearbox output shaft bearings very strange

I can twist the shafts going into the gearbox (more so with the drivers side) with my hand and it does knock when it stops.
A good half a turn each way id say then a clunk.
Do you think this may be my problem?

Could be cv joint on driveshaft

how much play is there supposed to be in the drive shafts ?
the noise seems to go away when i press the brake then comes back when i lift off.
Im going to get the car up on stands at the weekend check all bolts etc.
Any more ideas for me to check , im being drawn to the Drive shafts and wheel bearings.
Drive shafts look abit tricky in the Haynes :crap:
Don't worry driveshafts are dead easy to change. Dont forget to drain the box though before you remove the nearside :agree:

If youve just fitted pads, and the noise has started then id check there first, check the carrier and calliper bolts. Also check pads fit nice in the carrier.

the knocking noise seems to go away when i brake .
pads and calipers seem to be fitted correcttly no loose bolts pads are snug.
Ive removed the drivers side hub and the bearing looks fine (not sure what im looking for tbh)
Ive also removed the driveshaft which looks in good nick too ?
Under the gaiter on the shaft at the gearbox end, is this meant to have oil or greese inside??
Next im going to take another look at the mounts and get the other hub and drivshaft off
im going to take the hub and shaft to a garage to get them inspected

ive taken the drivers side strut off and the rubber ring around the hat had came off,
ive replaced it but i dont think that is causing the clunk when i lift the clutch in 1st.
could it be gearbox internals?

Ive taken my drive shaft to the garage and been told its no good.
They said the cup end bit was worn and that the spider bit is no good.
ill get another and hope thats was the problem.

my suspension strut top hats have a rubber cover/ring on them .
are these just to stop them getting damaged in transit ?.
or are they left on when fitted to the car.
mine are on the car.
ive searched but cant find anything.
cgb and mike sell them without the rubbers rings.
thanks

so ive dismantled and put back together the strut, ive replaced the drive shaft and replaced the lower ball joint on the wishbone while i was there.
Put it all back together today :) problem solved.
Allthough i noticed i only have one screw on the brake disc, it was covered by a spacer stuck on by Ktec around 2006 when they fitted new discs :crap:.
