Guys
My 5's got a problem with smoking,
It's not smoking at all on idle, low or high revs, but as soon as I drive the car I'm getting grey ish smoke,
At first I was blaming the turbo (which i have removed but seems to have minimal play in the shaft) but having used the search function a bit I'm led to believe it could be a breather problem too , as I have a 1mm restrictor in the hose coming off the top of the oil swirlpot( should this be there ?!!).

Also I'm getting oil pressure 2.5-3 on idle and 4-5 driving.

Thoughts please !

Sorry didn't word that very well, tried to post up a diagram which would have made more sense. What i ment was if running standard breather set up there should be two restrictors one in the pipe from T piece to telephone hose and one from T piece to Carb Base.

2 restrictors??
i was under the impression its just the one in the 'J' pipe from t peice to carb base.
you can just run it minimal, rocker to pot, top of pot to atmosphere/tank/filter and blank the port on the carb and telephone hose n bin the rest ;)

Cheer for the replys guys,

The carb isnt set up perfect but my AFR's arent too far off

I've got the 'cup' breather system so Rocker> swirlpot>sump/catch tank
But I had a restrictor in before the swirl pot, a little 1mm hole in the middle of it, I've now taken this out and it seems to have stopped the smoking, Ive not been able to get it out on the road to properly test it but I've done a couple of 100yd dashes and it seems ok.

Maybe there was too much restriction on the breathing of the rocker causing it to burn oil ??

You shouldnt have any restrictors in the cup breather style setup so that will have been causing the smoke, i.e. partially blocking the breather

Cheers Brigsy,

Out of interest,
Where will the oil have been burning if the breather was restricted ?
Is it passing the piston rings from below ?

Cheers

possible passing the rings, but it also increases the pressure inside the turbo, the oil return is direct to the sump so an increase in crankcase pressure causes it to pass the seals in the turbo.

Ok cheers, will that mean that the turbo's actually knackered because it's had oil passing the seals or would i expect it to recover ?

Cheers for the help
