View Full Version : Renault 5 flooding itself I think
Just got my r5 out for its mot, and I'm finding when it's self to stand it struggles badly to start, if I unplug the fuel pump and spin it over it clears itself and then starts, going to guess its flooding itself when left not running. Any suggestions ??
Probably just heat soak, just keep cranking it until it starts.
nah , ive had heatsoak a few times, didnt seem to be it this time, coudl crack for 5 mins with no joy and really smell fuel strong.. disconnect pump, run it over and it cleared itself and then began to fire.. done it about 5 times.. but now its stopped doing it :S
How much throttle are you giving it when cranking?
What is the best practice for starting the C1J? mine can be prone to this as well! Not for five mins but just difficult to start after being left a few weeks. I just put it down to the old design of the engine.
generally i usually just give the throttle a few taps when starting them, never had the issue before :S
I crank mine over once, if it doesn't start then I turn off, turn on again, let everything prime for a couple of seconds press the throttle to the floor, crank over again whilst giving the throttle a slight blip, it generally fires and I introduce a little choke. But I guess they are all different.

tapping will pump fuel in,full throttle and hold it there will allow maximum air flow and lean it out if your flooding theory is correct.
ah, now you put it genearlly, that makes perfect sence actually.. hmm if it reoccurs ill look more into it.
If you leave the pump running can you see the carb bowl overfilling and dripping into the venturi ? Maybe just a duff needle jet.
I've not whipped the carb top off yet but that's the next port of call, may also swap the float just incase it's cracked.
