Subframe and my big pile of brackets etc etc is now at the powder coaters:) I'm now going to focus on sanding and repainting parts that can't be powder coated, ie steering rack, driveshafts, servo etc. So I've started on my shocks that had some rust appearing, sanded and paint stripped back to bare metal, I've now got too sand the rust back as much as I can then apply rust treatment. pics...

:) I like to think of it as a nut and bolt restoration to non oe standards  my aim is to make my engine bay etc as clean and tidy as possible, plus I hate rust :D

Cheers Jeff, 3 coats of paint stripper lots of sanding/grinding, 1 coat of rust cure, 1 coat of etch primer so far. Just high build primer and then the top coat to go
Nad-5GTT
27-03-2014, 17:37
Managed to put a coat of etch primer on my shocks today, and sand back to bare metal my driveshafts and steering rack. I've also removed as much rust as I could off one of my axles and put a coat of rust cure on, all little jobs but making progress all the same. Pics

Cheers for the comment wilton warrier ;) get some pics up of your work in the projects thread.
Just received a call from the powder coaters with a price  it seems I got a bit carried away with what I wanted coated and forgot about the ever increasing price . I've just worked out that I left him over 60 pieces :wasntme:

Driveshafts and steering rack have now got a coat of zinc primer. I plan to spray my gearbox, water pump, shocks, drive shafts, steering rack and servo with 2k high build primer next week.

Little update for you only small and boring but hey I'm not forcing you to read it :D.
Hubs have now been painted and look lush :) I've also fannied about making a mount for my brake fluid resorvoire as I want it in the scuttle area. Once that was done I whipped the servo out and sanded it back to bare metal. Hope to get some high build on it later in the week. Only small things but most important is its progress, now how many weeks to the FCS

Cheers Matt, I'm hoping for a fairly decent finish on it once I've finished. The annoying thing is I've painted most of the parts that I'm now doing again many years ago, but just used a rattle can and the finish just isn't up to scratch now:scratch:

Right I'll warn anyone who hates shiney things too not look any further :D but for those who do like a bit of bling then enjoy.
Some parts I've collected from the powder coaters
I've also got a few things that I wanted black ie suspension parts, wishbone etc but on closer inspection they have got a dusting of very fine glitter from another job they done today. Somehow it floated onto my stuff aswell:sad2: should get that tomorrow. I'll pop some pics up in a moment.

Are they silver coated or you polished them up? Look good either way. :agree:
Nad-5GTT
01-04-2014, 20:18
They are a chrome effect powder coat, didn't even realise they did such a thing untill I walked in for a quote. There not proper blingy like chrome but more like a polished aluminium, which is ideal.
They defiantly look chrome/polish in the picture.

I'm now working on the engine bay, found a rust hole under the drivers headlight so have cut that and welds in a new piece. I've also welded in a piece of metal to divide the engine bay to the inner wing (by the headlight). Now I'm in the middle of welding up lots of oe holes for a smoother look, I think I'm about halfway there. I've also decided too take all of the underseal off under the arches and then redo it with new seam sealer etc I will then paint it in body colour.
I'm also still finding things to strip and repaint, I've just finished the starter motor, the ball joints and the gearbox thingy that slots into the subframe.

As Goobie is showing us his naked bits I thought I would too :D Just a few pics of my bay etc slowly going to bare metal, I've also been welding in lots of oe holes done about 20 so far and I've got around 15 left  I've now run out of gas oh and my grinders died too  I'm hoping to finish the welding and prep work and get some primer on for next Sunday, then it's a case of some filler work, seam sealer, stone chip, another coat of primer and then top coat  pics
Nad-5GTT
13-04-2014, 18:54
And some more :) I'm happy to report there's no nasty surprises, other than a bit of welding to a hole under the front drivers headlight it's all been good.
Well, at least you know there no rust hiding after a full rub down. :agree: What primer and stone chip are you going to use?
Nad-5GTT
14-04-2014, 14:35
Well, at least you know there no rust hiding after a full rub down. :agree: What primer and stone chip are you going to use?
I'll be using 2k high build primer from my local paint supplies(it's got added corrosion properties and can go straight onto bare metal) I'm not sure on stone chip yet  I've heard u pol or 3m is good. I've just found a different brand on eBay which is a rubbery consistency so I might go for that  I'll be using my stone chip gun for it whatever I choose.
I'm using 3M in black, used it before, gives a good finish, expensive though (compressor bottles cheaper so your ok.) but is really good.
Some body looking for red stone chip/guard... :scared: :cooter:
Edit to add. - You can get paintable stone chip/guard! Just an idea if you wanna go a bit wild. :agree:

As for the local meet, I need to organise one soon. Am sat on my butt in Kuala Lumpar waiting for a flight home later tonight. But once I am back, need to MOT, tax and insure and mine is ready to go :agree:

I've just braved the neighbours moaning and got the grinder and powerfile out :D: my intercooler pipe has been rubbing against the chassis rail and had taken the paint off and slightly dented it too.

I've burnt more underseal/ paint away from under crossmember, welded in more holes ( I think I've filled in about 35 factory holes so far ) welded in bolts inside scuttle area for my aei, removed the steering column, pedal box etc. I've probably got 90% of the old cellulose paint down to bare metal so not much more to go, I'm going to get all me paint etc Tuesday and hopefully will get some primer on wednesday.

I used my blow torch on the arch that wasn't connected directly to the inside ( I didn't fancy melting the paint on the interior ). Nasty stuff though make sure you have good ventilation.
I've used some stuff called Ferro bettol. The paint supplies swear by it. I've brushed it on section of my bay and it turns it into a slightly grey ish metal you then just put your primer etc straight over it

I've finally finished all welding to the engine bay, all cellulose paint is stripped back to bare metal and I've just chucked a lavish coating of rust inhibitor everywhere :yeah: I'm so pleased because I was starting to get to that pissed off point during the stripping part. I don't think It will be dry tomorrow to put a primer over, but I will be primering my shocks, servo, steering rack, driveshafts, gear box, timing chain cover and water pump. Today I made a start on repairing the drivers side sill. It wasn't that bad only a 5pence hole right on the underneath and the start of some surface rust right near the end. So I thought I may as well just cut out from the joining gap to the back.
Then I found that my inner sill has started to rot :crap: underseal can cover a host of disasters and so it seems bodges by previous owners. Anyhow it wasn't that bad, so I've cut out the bad and have welded in some new metal. I didn't have any thicker metal so I made two identical pieces and plug welded them together.

Had a good few hours today filling, sanding and smoothing things out. I'm about 70% done there :) still feel like I've got loads to do but I'm hoping to shoot some top colour on either this Sunday or possibly the Monday. Then just another sill to replace and I can start thinking about putting it back together.

I managed to get a coat of primer on yesterday but unfortunately it will need another as I didn't sand down enough in places and you can see sanding marks. I've just put on 4 layers of rubberized anti stone chip all under the arches, underneath the chassis rails and along the drivers sill. It's supposed to be white but is more a cream, never mind once the top coats on it shouldn't notice. Pics to follow

Not had much time lately, but have managed to repaint my shocks ( I mixed the paint at 2:1 & it should have been 50:50, so it had alot if drips :crap: ) all good now. I've also cleaned up back to bare metal and primed my clutch fork, distributor, lower steering column, fpr and the funny engine mount that slips into the subframe. I'll be painting them with a silver base and then a lacquer over this afternoon. And I've also wet sanded the engine bay ready for its final primer again today at some point :). Top coat tomorrow as well:yeah: I've got to that bored stage of it now, I'm looking forward to dropping the sandpaper and spray gun for sockets and spanners
Keep at it. You will get there in the end mate. There is always light at the end of the tunnel :agree:

Not much in the way of progress and to be honest things are going to slow a little :crap: the car was getting in the way of time with the family especially the last month where I've been flat out on it.
So I've decided to get it finished for the retro show instead which gives me an extra two weeks :D (sorry smithy, I'm still going to the fcs so you can give me a slap  ) and means I can spend time with my better half and my two boys :)
Anyhow I've had a bit of a snag with he paint..... it's the the wrong colour  the pictures will tell the story  needless to say ill be going back to get it mixed correctly. The engine bay will stay that colour as its only just off, but that will stand out like a sore thumb against the door.
I've also ordered some por 15 engine enamel so have started to strip the old paint off the block.

I'll try one more time.
Sheet me it's worked. The bonnet hinge is from the 1st tin of paint which was near on spot on. And you can see what the 2nd tin came out like :crap:. I've dropped it off at the paint shop and they are mixing it up so it's hopefully the same. Also a quick pic of engine paint being stripped ready for new colour.
I've also just bought a 22mm golf ralley G60 master cylinder to go with my wilwood brakes, and have dropped my sump, oil return pipe and my pedal box off to be powder coated. Fingers crossed I can start to put everything back together soon.
Nad-5GTT

Just picked up a few bits from the powder coaters. And my engine paint has finally turned up  I'll start that tonight. I've also ordered some boring stuff from Mike 16v, mainly gaskets.

I'll evaluate things after that, on a positive note I've still got an mot untill June 26th :). I think I've finally finished painting parts now :yeah:. I've just painted with a silver base and lacquer on top my master cylinder, radiator clip thingymejib, timing sensor, parts of the alternator, one way valves on the inlet manifold and the rear subframe bolts ( I couldn't find new ones ). Really looking forward to bolting this all back on. Going to start painting the block tonight before work.

I would have been inclined to mount that oil cooler vertically (next to the side tank on the rad) and block the rest of the hole up so you get as much air through the rad/oil cooler as possible. Your rad efficiency will be massively reduced how you've done it.
Looks minty fresh though fella, keep up the good work :agree:

Electrics are now sorted :) I've also moved the header tank over behind the drivers headlight. Had too cut 20mm out of the tank and get it welded together again as it sat too high and would have touched the bonnet :crap: I'm going to try it first without the swirl pot as its so much neater, but I can revert back to the pot if I need to. The 13mm hose joiner has just literally turned up so I can now complete the water circuit, unfortunately my missus works every Saturday so I'm with the kids and I'm not going to get much time tomorrow due to fathers day  some pics for you

Ye it will get flow, but not maximum as it's not got a shroud around it to force the air through ;) . If you got a fan and some smoke you would see that hardly any air would pass through the oil cooler or rad.. Air always (like water) takes the easiest path possible.
Although you didn't have any problems dosen't mean to say its working 100% efficient :cooter:

I've tapped a thread into the top return pipe on the header tank and put a bolt in it, all ok here but I thought I would just make sure it wasn't leaking by pressure testing it. It didn't leak but I found a pin hole in the bottom weld  so I had to run it too a guy the other side of town too put a blob of weld over it. This basically wasted over an hour of my time.
Then after filling up the system with antifreeze I pressure tested it only too find a leak coming from my water temp sender in the cylinder head blanking plate ( the annoying part is my friend put this in and assured me he had sealed it correctly ). So I've had too drain part of the fluid all over my lovely clean gearbox, take the plate off and basically redo it correctly. Then go over and clean half my engine bay  yet another hour passes and im back where I am before.
I did get my passenger side caliper etc bolted on and have cut 100mm out of my exhaust too fit a flexi pipe in. Fingers crossed I have a more productive evening before I go too work.

I've been a bit slack on the car lately and after seeing the cars at the retro show yesterday it's giving me the kick up the arse to get back on it. Saying that though due to fund issues I won't be getting it on the road untill the start of august so I won't be rushing.

:ashamed: over 2months have passed and I've not touched the car. I've not got much to do to finish it, but decided that I didn't want to insure tax and mot the car for probably only a few weeks worth off Sun. So I'll get it finished and ready for the very first sign of good weather next year.
Off the top off my head I've got too,
Fill up oil and coolant
Paint drivers door shut
Make air filter box
Prep, prime and paint rear arches and standard sideskirts
Fit wings, bumper, grill etc
Cut out rot from passenger sill and weld in New pattern panel
Paint above
Bleed brakes
There's got to be more but that's the basics :D
Once the kids are back at school/nursery I'll get back into the swing off things.

I have recently had to put my Springer spaniel too sleep :( and have been scouring old photos off her.
Anyway I stumbled over some pics off my 5 when I had just bought it back in 2002 I think  there a picture off a picture hence the crap quality

I can't tell if it's just the angle of the photo or is there a huge amount of camber in wheels?
Perhaps you were the first person to start the euro scene!

 no I was holding the photo and its curved as I'm holding it. It does look like it's got mega camber going on

Sorry to hear about your dog.My gifriend has a Springer and they are such clever lovely dogs.
The project is great and can't wait to see it finished.Hopefully mine will be done for next year and will get to see yours at shows
Always great coming across some old pictures of your car you had forgotten about:agreed:
Bad news when you loose a pet, particularly if it's like your assistant and always by your side.
My collie is only five but I'm already worried about when that time comes, one of the crap points about having pets but I suppose it's just part of life. My mum has recently had to do the same thing to one of her old dogs also. :disagree:
Nothing wrong with taking your time with these projects. Sometimes life just gets in the way. It's admirable that you have managed to stick with it all these years and not just get shut when you get bored and then regret it later down the line.
Giving yourself a little more time I'm sure will only increase the quality of what is already an awesome project with amazing attention to detail. I have said it before and I will say it again. I really wish I had your attention to detail. I'm always in to much of a hurry to chuck it all together and go break it again to be arsed.

Cheers Luke, yep I'll be at some shows next year.... in the car this time rather than just in person
Thanks for the kind words Phil, I do tend to get bored of the old girl from time to time but up till now I've never thought of selling up, saying that though I will half heartedly try next year as we're trying to save for a kitchen extension. I expect that my valuation will be slightly to high and I'll still be the owner mind :D

Well over four months have passed since I last worked on the 5 :ashamed: but I have an update :) only small mind but still it's progress and maybe I'm getting the love again for the old girl.
As it was a lovely afternoon I decided to repaint my drivers side door shut. The reason I've had to repaint this was because the paint shop mixed up my paint slightly wrong  I only realized after I'd painted the engine bay and door shut. Any how I left the engine bay the slightly darker shade but got them to mix it properly this time and now I'm hoping it blends in....pleeeease.
Pic 1 shows the difference in shade the bit in the middle is where it's been flatted back, pic 2 is all flatted back and masked, pic 3 shows the new colour to the old darker shade. You can just make out where I've pulled the masking tape away from the right. It's still to wet to go pulling away all the tape but the match looks so much better.

Ye it will definitely be going to some shows next year. I'm planning on cracking on with it in the next few weeks and getting a lot of the jobs out the way rather than wait untill the weather picks up and then rushing. Where's yours been then? You still enjoying that beast of a bmw.

No progress as off yet  just seem to be busy elsewhere in life leaving me with not much renault time:cry:
Anyhow it's pretty irrelevant because it's looking like I'm not going to be able to afford to put the car on the road this year.
For a good few months the rumours have been going that our department is looking to make severe staffing cut backs and today at a briefing they just aren't going away. I'm not looking at redundancy but we will be put into another department where I'll have 2 years too find a job or it will be out the door:( but the worse case is I could be over a grand down per month :sad2: depending on what they get us too do.
So with this in my mind I've decided to save as much as I can untill something happens. So at least I've got something too fall into should I need it. So heavily saving = no funds to put the 5 on the road...again.
Life can suck sometimes. But trying too look on a positive note we had these rumours a few years back and nothing happened, so hopefully the new man in charge will get a blow to the head and will forget about trying to change everything around.

Cheers chaps, well just have too see what happens  I don't normally take much notice of the rumours because it can do your head in but sometimes I do worry. I've still got some jobs to do on the car so I'll still be posting.
Keep the 5 tucked up in that garage mate and carry on with it when things are more stable. That's my wonderful advice :cooter:

Well no updates on the car but very good news on the job front. The rumours have been quashed at our weekly briefing so my job is safe 😄 happy days. Got a little welding project to do which will give me more welding experience then in a few weeks I'll be cracking on with welding in a new ns sill. Really looking forward to getting the car finished for the retro show now. Might even treat the car to a few items too 🚗🚗

Payed for another years membership 😊 and have now started work on the old girl. As normal I've left it really late to finish the bits and pieces ready for the retro show 😆 started to cut out the rotten sill only to find the inner was a lot worse than the drivers side. So I've been making up plates ready to weld in to make it as good as new. Pics won't load up 😕
