adjusting tracking with string

Can anyone tell ne how the cup car boys would set their tracking up using string? I need to get it set up roughly so I can drive to mat at code red to sort it properly:D

Got some axle stands, some quite thick fishing line and a decent ruler?

leave the car on it's wheels, fix the wire on the rear wheels.
measure the difference in track width, add something to equalize the front and rear track width.

hold the wire from the back alongside the front wheel and make sure it hits the front and rearside of the wheel. you could do it by eye too, that's how i do it with my 9...

I have axel stands fishing line and a metal ruler. Do need to do this with the wheels on or off? If on how do you adjust the tracking? If with wheels off do I need the axel stands under the ball joint to keep sus geometry the same?
