Can you work out the engine power by weight and 1/4 mile times and speed. If so whats the formula for this.Sure peeps have talked about this, just i was having a dispute with an ex rally mechanic for barretts motorsport who said it was not possible to get 300hp from a 1.4 engine.

im sure scoff did a bhp vs 1/4mile trap speed before...

Next, he'll be telling you a dump valve is vital at 48psi :wasntme:

So are we saying stu clarkes car is around 300hp, or anyone elses for this matter. As i want to shut this guy up.He worked on scoobys but i only ever see him building engines for private customers and believe this is all he really did for the company.

On his defence mart they won 5 british championships in 9 years so i doubt being in a team like that,he knows nothing.I said around 300 and the guy said well around isnt 300 engine horse power is it.

I meant with regards to the c1j engine.

Stu's trap speeds don't lie - If his engine isn't producing 300hp+, he's defo knocking on the door of it.

Does it really matter what your mate Jean Todt thinks anyway?

So what does the power calc work out at with Stuart's trap and ET? Or do we need his car weight to work it out properly?

You'd need the weight as well.

Most 230/240hp, 780-800kg, gtt's trap at around 110-112mph. Stu's car is trapping at 125mph...

Edit to say - Ok, just looked; it says 122mph for Stu in the 1/4 mile table, but I'm sure he's run a 125mph pass as well.

I saw a c1j gtt hit 330hp on the rollers at the weekend, okay so that was with a lot of help from the laughing gas, but yeah, 300hp has been done from a 1.4 :D

And thats with a tiny choking carb :) wounder what his car or anyones in that case would go like with efi and larger tb.. we all going to be walking 120mph traps and knocking on the 300bhp door in time to come.

I think your rally friend just doesn't imagine it's likely, and you can't really blame him for that, I'm sure he's tired of hearing bhp BS just like anyone else who spends enough time around it. he hasn't seen first hand the work some folks have put in to get those results. instead of telling him bshp figures, tell him about the 1/4m results and trap speeds, if he's worth his salt then he'll have some more respect for what your saying.

for a rally mechanic youd think he'd know about the formula one turbo cars from the 1980's

they used 1.5 litres turbocharged engines, I'm sure they ran upto 6 bar in qualifying knocking out near 1500hp

awesome things

just my 2p's worth lol

Adam L
05-12-2008, 17:15
Yes, but they compensate low cc with very high revs (18k rpm) That's why they get away with making that power. They're drawing in a VAST amount more air than a 1397cc only revving to 7k rpm.

Philclubman
05-12-2008, 17:37
the f1 turbo cars of the mid 80's only rev'd to around 13000rpm. But youve totally missed my point that 300 bhp is far from imposible to get from a 1.4 litre engine. not easy granted, but not impossible

Adam L
05-12-2008, 17:42
I didn't miss the point, I just pointed out the fact that F1 cars aren't exactly the best comparison to use. We're talking road cars, not something secifically built for a world championship...

the ability to swap a gearbox quickly in a forrest doesn't automatically mean that you have any idea about anything else.

I know a lot of professional motorsport mechanics, I seek the opinion of very few of them.

Anyway, as a rally man he must have heard of the Turbo 2.

If I may have my tuppence worth, 300 BHP (without gas) is entirely possible from a road driveable c1j.

The engine i did for CTM had EFI, a monster BVH, VNT, tubular exh man, Custom inlet manifold (not perfect) with a not overly large TB and made 256bhp with a slipping (std volvo) clutch on 21psi. The cam was an experimental one which didn't work (peak power much too low). With a decent clutch allowing some boost it would have made 300bhp and with a cam which peaked around the intended 7000-7500 it was going to make WELL OVER that, unfortunately the budget dried up so it was sold as was.

That was a road useable package. For a dedicated race engine.....

Beware people who say things aren't possible, they may be difficult, expensive, maybe even pointless but in the early 80's they would have said 1000+bhp was impossible for 1500cc's, 5 years later they were well over that.

It now has an adequate clutch it was crying out for amongst other things ;)

I believe this engine will produce over 300bhp as well.

By the way I now own Deans engine :D
Granted there has been a few teething problems but this engine is phenomenal.

I'm hoping to have it finished for 2009 and attending as many of next years events I can.

Big Jim, I'll be in touch. I need to have a chat with you about a few things :)
