Evening all will try my best at getting this across I have a phs 2 R5 has done 112k fully standard the car starts runs drives very well no apparant issues .The car boosts to approx the B position on the standard boost gauge.Always run the car on Super.I never thrash the car the occasional blast perchance. It only gets used now and again now my question is.Due to the age/mileage how can I check the carb is running/set up as it should be? The car has very good service history but nothing about carb re-builds etc.Since joining in April I notice AFR gauges being mentioned are these a worthwile purchase for a standard set up? or can I just use the normal Gunsuns type affair for testing the exhaust gases? What if any damage can I do if the carb has wained a tad over the years and if it has what other that a re-build can be adjusted to bring it back in line? As I mentioned the car suffers from no hesitancy lumpiness erratic idleling etc in fact starts better from hot better than the 5`s I owned 15yrs ago.So is it a case of if it aint broke dont fix it? Or should it still be monitored.I dont want to leave it at a garage to be set up if they dont know what they are doing plus would rather learn how to do it myself.Appologies for the long ramble but any advice?info on the above would be great thanks in advance..

There are more R5 gurus in here, though my opinion is that u DO need an afr gause. If u can spare the money for an AEM UEGO since it's the cheapest and easiest to install-use, GO for it. I installed it 1 week now and i can't understand how i was using the car all this time without it. It's not a matter of being standard or not, using an afr meter allows you to get away of serious problems like headgasket or even worse caused by silly things like a blocked fuel filter or anything like that.

As i said if u can give the money do it, it's an investment.

Thanks for the advice yes I know what you are saying but how do you know what is throwing out the AFR ie carb not right or as you mention blocked fuel filter and on the carb how can I adjust anything if this is not right or is it a case of worn parts and re-build it? also how can this stop the headgasket popping?

It just gives you information of what is happening ,on what revs on what scenario idle-boost-cruise etc, from there it's up to you to find the cause, but from there it's easy mate since there are standard faults.

For example all this time i had VERY poor fueling on idle which caused MANY problems and to be honest it was dangerous, BUT i wasn't aware of that till i installed the aem. Now it's properly adjusted to stoicheometric value on idle and it behaves MUCH better plus it's lower on rpms. It stays on 800 rpm on idle.

Get an AEM wide band off scoff and look who in your area who can tune your carb for you if you're not confident yourself. I'm sure someone will be willing to help. Try to drive it off boost until you get it sorted. Popping HG's generally is to do with fuelling/detonation.

help save alot of fuel if mixture is out, plus save fuel while driving because you can drive at a certain speed/load with pretty lean afrs :D a little too much throttle cruising and they seem to go quite rich.

Understanding no, just some research will do.

First thing you need to get before a afr set up is either a lambda boss welded into you're downpipe. Or buy a downpipe with an lambda boss already welded in.

Once that is done and downpipe is fitted back up then you can get the gauge.

Now, you have a sensor which screws into the new lambda boss in your downpipe.
Which will connect up to your afr gauge. You need to run the cable for the gauge into the car. Once it is in the car you can wire up the power supply to and ignition live (yellow wire) I chose the cigarette lighter. After that mount your gauge and away you go learning about afr!

No probs thanks I`m an old skool tinbasher so that kind of stuff I`m ok at it`ll be the understanding of whats going on with the gauge that`ll loose me,but at my current rate of play it`ll prob take me a month or two to get round to fitting it...thanks to you all for the quick replys and help...

If its runnig good and pulls through the rev range with no hesitation it will be fine mate! No need to panic at standard boost. Give it a power run on a rolling road if needs be its the cheapest option and will tell you what you need to know. I personally think theres no point in fitting an afr gauge unless you plan on turning the boost up.

Just noticed your only in york, if you want pop down and ill stick my wideband on for nowt and check it out for you??

Sorry mate I thought you had popped a head gasket.... Hahaha. As Brigsy says it should be solid of it is running low/standard boost.

Ha Ha no the car runs great I just wasnt sure if it there was anything that I should or could do to see if anything was worn/needed adjusting due to the age/mileage of the car on the carb fueling side of things but thanks a lot for your advice Josh..
