Got lots done on the r5 today, however spotted an oil leak between the gearbox and the engine .. gona guess either the sump half moons or at worst the crank seal..

If you get the sump off (can be done without engine removal) check it isn't cracked round the bolt holes nearest the flywheel, had to weld up a few in the past.

indeed thats presuming its the sump leaking , and not the crank seal though :(

Very true, loads of brake cleaner to dry it all off and then run it up with a torch shining at the seal....then wait.:scared: Might be worth taking off the little ally plate round the flywheel to get a better view.

No its not - you have liberally applied oxidisation prevention liquid.

its a fresh engine with 0 miles on the clock , hence clean.. Was built by a company who specilise in r5s so im not best pleased to be quite honest :(

Im going to have to get it moted and drive it with the leak first off as i cant really leave it idling as i need to get the rings bedded in. Anoying !!

Had mine leaking from there, half moon seal, when it went back on put bit of sealant around the seal and its fine now, just a small leak elsewhere now :( alway worth checking sump is still flat along front and back as bolt holes can bend if it gets cranked up too much.

whipped the cover off and it appears to be coming from the sump as i presume if it was crank seal id be seeing it flung all around the flywheel.

Promising news, still not great when you have paid for the lump to be built, at least you know the engine can stay where it is for now at least.:)

Use decent sealant and don't bother listening to the Haynes manual on this one, just make sure the mating faces are all clean and dry and use **** loads of sealant even on the half moon seals. ;)

could possibly still be crank seal mate. mine did excactly the same and wasnt on the fly,

Woth a drip like that its probably the crankshaft seal mate. The half moon seals dont usually leak that much.

:( gutted.. also it only seems to leak whilst running

erm yeah. it wont leak not running as theres no seals as low down as the oil sits when standing. try your sump but i do believe itll be crank.

well i whipped the sump off earlier.. only sealant on the edges of the half moon seals (ive always sealed the whole half moon), also it appears they they changed from a white to black sealant half way.. ..

grr i really shouldnt be having to do this
