I think some caliper extender brackets and renault 21 txi discs are a good upgrade.

Not done it myself but I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Put a wanted ad up in the classifieds for the caliper extenders. Tuners used to sell the discs and extenders as a kit not seperately bur someone might have a set knocking about.

I still have the drawings/dimensions for the extenders and had a batch made in a group buy years ago

Anyone offered the 172 front brakes up to the 5GTT hub? The 21 TXi discs are a good fit @ 285mm but the hubs are different and hence the calipers are very different fit wise.

I can't help but note that the front discs (280mm) would fit on a 5/9/11 etc hub, and the actual hub arrangement is pretty much the same as the 5 one. Balljoint, wishbone, track rod, shock etc etc to the point where I wouldn't be surprised if the hub casting was interchangeable as it is between the 5/9/11/19 and so forth.

Are we missing an easy 280mm brake upgrade here? (I'm too lazy to go outside and try it myself lol, its WET today!!

172 discs fit but you still need an extender bracket for the caliper
