Thought it was about time I put a little progress thread of my r5, I have been into renaults since I started driving. Mostly clios though. But I now have a work van for week use so could now get myself a weekend toy :),

Here's my old clio..

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv31/gardner51/2012-03-16_20-13-11.jpg

Swapped it for this r5..

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv31/gardner51/IMG_5792.jpg

I didn't like the look of the front end or wheels but this could easily be sorted. It had a good wod of recipts and a nice engine spec and with a quick test drive I new it was the one :)

Quick spec list...

ported polished big valve head triple angle valve new valve seats shortened valve guides matched manifolds oil gallery mod,1.9mm head gasket set.uprated bolts.
piper 285 cam
Group a carb
Low compression pistons
New liners
All new bearings mains, big ends, thrust washers. New oil pump, balanced crank flywheel, new gaskets. ,group n clutch,

T28 roller bearing turbo.
Braided oil feed turbo.big turbo elbo k Tec 2.5 down pipe side exit system
Pro alloy grill mounted front mount
Full set blue samco.
Alloy header tank
Alloy swirl pot
Alloy breather swirl pot
Alloy breather tank
Alloy carb top
Alloy bleed valve

In car boost k Tec
Big brakes 285mm
Spax 40mm kit

So first of was new wheels as I really didn't like the ones on it. So purchased some William wheels cheap :)
Also I didn't like the side exit so got a rear exit,

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv31/gardner51/IMG_2442.jpg

Next was to get rid of the gt tuning bumper and fit a standard Ph2. Picked this up for a good price but did need abit of work

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv31/gardner51/IMAG0315.jpg

Came back from the body shop looking like New,

Off with the old.. on with the new...

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv31/gardner51/IMAG0335.jpg

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv31/gardner51/IMAG0340.jpg

Next was to lower the front end as sits way to heigh for my liking. So apex -50 springs was orderd and fitted..

Well went to tcs performance last week for some power runs AMD check fueling, best it made was a 190hp,

Fueling was lean tho so its back their now getting this sorted, I would like over 200hp,

Will report back once I kno how she gets on,

Ellz

16-06-2012, 00:17
190 aint shy though mate, but lean running is a no no if you want to keep your head gasket in one piece ;)

get the carb sorted and she'll fly :smokin:

gardner51
05-07-2012, 08:35
So its been over 3 weeks since I have updated this..... That's because I havnt had the car. It's been at a garage who is ment to be sorting out the fueling....

In the first week they found a blocked fuel filter, so put a new one on,

Following week they found something wrong with a needle in the carb. so changed that over also found a boost leak from where the choke had been removed..

This week their saying theirs a low down missfire and its.getting spark blow.. so new cap and leads on their way,

Now I'm getting really f'ed off with this company, I have read a lot on how easy it is to get them set up nearly rite. Drill out second stage ect,

I'm tempted to just go get the car back. Get myself a afr gauge and try myself or get someone of here to help me out n pay them...

Update time...

Finually got the car back, its now producing 192 Hp at 24psi, only couple more hp but I have gained 10hp in mid range,

Have also fitted some front fogs, buckets and harnesses. Will upload some new pics later on,

Havnt updated this in a while!

On the 22/9/2012 took the 5 out for a spin after fitting a new front mount,

Plodding along down a main road at about 40 and boom. Looked in the rear mirror to see nothing but white smoke!

Revs died and I just rolled to a local laybye. Instantly thought head gasket but the temp was fine! Had to get recoverd back to my garage and start investigating what happend...

Ill let pics do the talking.

Wow that's quite interesting head work you've had done would that be a three angle valve.

That's not good mate I dropped a valve two years ago as did Dan last year. It'll be worth taking the exhaust housing off the turbo to check you've not damaged the turbine wheel.

That's good as I've seen some quite chewed up rear wheels after valves being dropped and one person has only just spotted it a year after it happening. :agree: good luck getting it all back together. :)

Abit of a update for ellz-

The head that failed measured in at 73.2mm thick - so above the 73.0 limit for big boost people talk about. Im not totaly sure why it failed but ran sweet, was very quiete on idle, probably the quitest c1j iv heard. Was a shame as head has had alot of work, valve guides ground down flush, heavily ported, and was running different valves, ctm stamped on it so its had the work.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/sr50james/cylinderheadddd004.jpg

sourced a 2nd hand head which measured in at 73.4mm - standard thickness i beleive? Has also had some head work - not as much as previous head but some nice port polishing

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a371/sr50james/ellz23buiild005_zpsd684e80f.jpg

Head was stripped, chemically cleaned and all valves cleaned and re lapped in - then re fitted with piper valve springs and some valve stem oil seals off a 16v vauxhall as told these are tighter and should not lift

got cold towards the end of the day though! While I was there I checked Elliott's carb - it had been to a mini tunning place for carb setup. Biggest drill bit I had was 1.5mm and it fit in the main, so suspect a 1.5/1.6mm main in there. Cant remember what ac was 1.1/1.2mm - probably standard. And you guessed it 2nd stage untouched. I drilled 2nd stage to 1.2mm and will be fitting a standard main and then checking it all on his new afr gauge and going from there

another step forward :)

got everything plumbed in and ready to start priming oil ect,

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv31/gardner51/915401FE-967F-4221-B8BD-A15A5C02B338-2848-000001514B43BA98_zps0911b7f0.jpg

removed king lead and cranked over, but noticed fuel pissing out the side of the carb, so thought must be the diaphragm split, so orderd a new carb gasket kit,

so I removed the fuel pump relay and continued to crank over trying to get oil to come out of the turbo oil feed,

tried this for a while but no joy,

didn't want to take sump back off to pack with Vaseline, as I had just siliconed it up and its abit anal to get off,

so tried over filling the oil and crank over but still nothing,

so drained excess oil back out and orderd a second hand dizzy drive to mod to spin oil pump.

parts arrived day after ordering ( Thanks Mike)

went back down garage to sort everything out, modified the dizzy so I can spin it with a drill, I had a spare distributor aswell so I used this to spin the drive...

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv31/gardner51/B15A8E56-810C-4971-8345-E0DB07228C87-2848-00000151397F67FB_zps9cd80470.jpg

http://i667.photobucket.com/albums/vv31/gardner51/69D44CF2-B48E-43CF-8DDE-10831D7F4997-2848-000001513F20F51C_zpsa7818fde.jpg

after 5 seconds I had oil coming through the turbo feed and also was getting good oil pressure, so put back the old dizzy drive and distributor.

next I took off the carb and set about replacing the diaphragm,

did this, put carb back on, re connected everything, cranked it over ready to start but again, fuel rushed out the side of the carb.

I then started getting annoyed, shut the garage door and went home,

after a few posts on facebook, I then realised what I had done.... fitted fuel line into acc pump outlet, haha!

so this morning went back to garage, moved fuel line to correct place, after a couple of attempts of starting, She Fired up!!

couldn't stop smiling haha!

shell sound better once the blow gets sorted between the downpipe and crossover pipe!

yep got a oe grill to go on,

just keep running into more problems!!

when I go to start it, the starter motor just clicks.. even with a jump from my van, if I then turn engine over by hand a 1/4 of a turn then try n start, it then trys to turn over a little but gives up, as if the starter hasn't got enough juice?

took starter motor off and tried it on the floor, it does come out and spin but is noisy,

so will be getting a new starter and new battery!

Has anyone else who is running a lightened flywheel have similar problems?

was speaking to mr smith (cant remember his username) he seems to think it could be because the flywheel has been shaven a little, bringing the flywheel closer to the starter, then not allowing the starter wheel to come all the way out?

little update,

basically was having problems with it starting when hot, bought a new high out put starter, new battery, still the same,

suddenly dawned on me that when me and james rebuilt the engine, I for some reason used the old conrod cap! instead of the matching one,

so Friday I pulled it down ready to swap the cap over, as had a mot booked in for today (sat)

put the new cap on, cleaned the sump when I noticed a crank in the sump!

luckily james had a spare sump, so shot over their Friday night and collected it.

this morning (sat) I started nice and early finishing of the sump ect,

the oil needed priming so I did the old "spin it with a drill" trick,

I must have put the dizzy drive a tooth out when refiting as after this I couldn't get the car to start!

I spent 2-3 hours trying to sort this, even went back and started fresh putting engine at tdc, putting dizzy drive on at the correct postion, still nothing...

then spoke to gtjosh I think his user name one here! top lad!

previsely my dizzy must have been 180 out and my leeds where swapped round to suit,

so when I then put it back to how it was ment to be, my leeds where now 180 out, but I didn't no this lol!!

So missed my m.o.t today :( but booked in for next sat

a few pics of the old girl...

Passed its mot and now has tax,

I had a buyer lined up but I pulled out last minute :crap: all the effort I put in to build it back up and I couldn't just let it go,

so have done a nice amount of miles with only one problem the idle jet getting blocked,

decided to turn boost up but was shocked to find that was leaning out at 14psi!!

I have checked my carb and its currently at 1.3 second stage, standard main, 1mm a.c, I have got a .9 to put in but im sure this isn't my problem causing it to lean out,

looked under the car at the pump and noticed their was no fuel filter :sad2: so have ordered a new one, also ordered a new fuel pump which I no will be more then enough for 20 psi. after I have fitted these I will check fuel pressure at the carb, hopefully this will make it run abit richer so I can wind the boost up!

will report results when all fitted

I pulled out of selling a mint GTT that I loved at the last minute many years ago. The guilt I felt having broken an agreement that I'd made with the buyer was palpable. The guy was gutted. Shan't be doing that again.
