hi all, anyone know what size clutch the clio 172 uses? and as with the 5gtt will the volvo turbo clutch fit and handle more torqu/power/abuse thaan the stock 172 item?

I believe the 172 clutch is 215mm and the 5gt is 200mm, don't quote me on it but i'm pretty sure there the right sizes

Pretty sure the Valeo 'uprated' clutch came in both 200mm and 215mm

ok have checked out the clio info and the car does have a 215mm flywheel, helx offer a clutch for the car, and organic uprated one but its rated to 252Nm 185lb ft. what are the ovlov ones rated too? anyone know? thought they were somewhere in the region of 200bhp 200lb ft? im sur ethe volvo one will be cheaper than the 259.64+vat the helix ones are going for

What's wrong with the standard one mate? Are you running that much more than o.e torque level?

I'm using an AP 200mm paddle on a Volvo flywheel with a GT cover!!!

Needed a clutch in a hurry and thats what I managed to scrape together in time!! Works well at 240bhp and 230lb/ft :)

standard 172 is a 6.5mmx215mm plate, the cover doesn't 'feel' that strong. the volvo valeo is 7.62mmx215mm with a stronger feeling cover. it will fit your 172 flywheel but have your needle files at the ready - the dowels are slightly off :)

I think the valeo will be a fair bit stronger.

If you want an uber strong clutch then order a 7.62mmx215mm padle plate from AP or helix and use it in a valeo cover. Not far short of that will be ashy's 200mm combo. I recently looked at my 215mm paddle that I had in my car and unlike the old 200mm one I used in my GTT engine it hasn't eaten the flywheel, looks in good shape after a year of work :)

did you have to machine the flywheel at all? does anyone have the torque ratings of the volvo 215mm clutch?

Scoff

do you mean me adey ? no machining here. I don't think ashy will have either, or not to make something fit anyway. I lie a bit though, I tapped the mounting holes to 8mm for the valeo cover since the stock 172 cover uses M7.

no one seems to have torque capacity's for those clutch's, from experience they are letting go at about 220lb, in the volvo turbo engine's we did.

no sorry aimed at ashy,

so i could use a volvo complete 215mm clutch for a stronger n/a clutch setup, no need to take more power just need it to hold up to more abuse

Scoff

yeah. you can't interchange plates and covers though since the plates are of different thickness (6.5mm vs 7.62mm). the whole valeo would be OK I think.

I have one of these in my 225 engine albeit probably temporarily. Im hoping it will last at least untill i get a map into it, but i suppose it depends on where the torque is in the rev range. Im informed the 225 has a great slug of torque at about 1500 rpm!!

so just need to tap out the cover fixing holes to 8mm and file a bit off the locating lugs?

Scoff

I filed the dowel holes in the cover, I think a couple were off by about 1mm :)

it has 3 locating lugs the holes need taking back a little by about 1mm as scoff said

complete kit was 138 notes

as it was getting changed thought id get a better friction plate so had helix knock this up

nope that was about 155ish on its own tho the volvo kit would be a good upgrade for the 172 :agree:

little one for clio owners if you do this, you need a clio release bearing as the ovlov one doesnt fit on the clio fork :agree:

I guess you could fit the OVLOV fork, wanna buy one :D

where is the cheapest place I can get a 7.62mmx215mm padle plate from AP or helix?

cheers

Scoff

I don't know about cheapest but I guess most ap agents will be about the same price. speak to techcraft, I think I payed about £190 for a 215mm 4 paddle plate delivered.

do you have your clutch cover to suite ? that plate won't fit into a 172 cover. my old AP paddle and valeo cover might be up for grabs, its modified to fit a 172 flywheel. its had a hard life but still servicable, it didn't ever slip in my engine. It might be a few days before I'm sure that I won't need it anymore though.
