View Full Version : Need help from the pmt trackday crew..
I have booked a couple of track slots for fcs at donnington in the van. It actually dawned on me lastnight that i better check if there is any noise restrictions!? 98db at 3/4 max rpm static test.
I know from last time i checked it with the old turbo with my cheapo chinese db meter i made
104db, this is with the ktec/tiger side exit exhaust.
I need a pmt solution that is cheap. With money been tight with the france trip theres no way i can afford to be making a new exhaust system etc. Ive been thinking of making a cheeky cap to restrict the tailpipe a bit and ramming wire wool in to pass the static test?? Didnt tk do this with coke can jubilee clipped on??

What did Bruce use on his clio at ND?
Could try one of these Brigsy:

Would one of those work? Would it restrict the exhaust much??
It would restrict the exhaust as it effectively reduces the diameter. As long as you don't plan to run mega boost on track I doubt it would make too much of difference. You could always take it out after the test if you don't mind splitting the exhaust in the pits on the sly..
As for it actually working I don't know, only one way to find out! If it doesn't work send it back for a refund.
For £15 im going to give it a go like. I usually run a fair whack of boost on track but not too bothered about turning it down a few lb if needs must.
Worked for Eugein on his Cup car, so I reckon you'll be fine mate.
Wire wool is another option, but has to be securely fitted. If it blows out everywhere, you'll probably get black-flagged.

Think you're onto a winner here Captain! :niceone:
The VAG Clio I had, had a simple insert in the 4 inch tailpipe & the noise was reduced massivley with that! ;)
Brigsy, maybe we should fit one for the France trip :D Nah. PMT is used to the sidey drone, hour after hour ! :);)
how do you fit it into a sidey when the end is oval?

I was thinking about splitting the join at the centre and fitting it there, should be alreet?

once the test is past, whip the insert out..............simples.....

yeah and lift off where the drive by point is, if there is one ;)
Ive got one on order now. Im half tempted to get the grinder out and chop the letterbox end off the sidey, but i can see that making it louder still??

Chop the letterbox off and then get one of those nice exhause clamps which join the pipe end to end. Then you can put the silencer in & the tailpipe back on. Makes it easy to remove/refit in the future too.
That could be a win steve! Where do you get them clamps from??

Believe it or not mate, the best & cheapest place found then at was at Renault!!
Just make sure you measure your exhaust Dia to ensure you get the right size ;)
Any pics steve?? All i can think of is fancy v band setups.
The insert is here, i ordered 2.5" and it looks rather small, going to trial fit it soon

You should be able to get one of these from your local Renault stealership or maybe a Kwik Fit type place??

Was just in Revolution and noticed they sell these... in 2.5" and 3"

I might fit one just to make the car a bit quieter around town and on the motorway! Looks like a good bit of kit.
Id need a quiet exhaust to begin with to make that work
Pmt wire wool in the tailpipe of my side exit and wire mesh jubilee clipped over the tailpipe got me through the static test, 88db @4500 rpm.
Obviously i removed this straight after and got black flagged on the main straight at donnington, 98.6 db with the limit of 98, jobsworths :crap:

12" silencer a bit noisy then marrow?:crap:

I did a write up on this by installing another silencer into the sidey. Check my posts for it, sorry can't put a link up as I'm on my phone. It worked well.
I seen that andy, that is the only way to sort it if you want to do trackdays regularly without the hassle of getting black flagged.

just get a deflector to points it to the floor, dB is pressure, bounce it off the floor and it will give a lower reading

Eh, surely it would work with any exhaust? Mines 3" with a 12" silencer and its MEGA loud... I'm not sure why you dont think that flap would work?
Tony Walker

the flap diverts from a quiet exhaust to bypass the silencer making it louder/flow better.

No, this one just sits in the exhaust. When fully open its as it would be normally and as its closed it reduced the noise. Its not a diverter like you see with an actuator on the side.
If thats how it works it will be a major restriction power wise :crap:

Ah ok :D i take it back lol.
Reducing the tailpipe and/or bore size will naturally quieten the exhaust. Don't believe too much of the hype that having a pipe diameter .5" or even 1" smaller than what you currently have in situ will hurt power levels.
As a good example, I was running a 2.5" bore/3" tailpipe on the Jap taxi for ages, bearing in mind the system length compared to a GTT as well, and there was no detrimental loss to power there.
Plenty of 600hp+ Evo's running similar spec systems...

2.25" was ran on the VAG powered 5 and at approx 290bhp had no issues on a full mongoose system
Better to have a system with no steps in diameter or nasty angles than go up.5 etc on size
2.5inch will flow over 300bhp with no issues
Some engines / cars react to exhaust changes different but also sound levels change - on the VX220 the 2.5 is louder than the 3" setup but a lot of it comes down to some proper silencers
Just changed from 2" on the 4x4 octavia to 2.5" and feels no bloody different :D but then I did have the twin cats as std which is a lot better than the std single oe cat of the octavia vrs stuff. Just makes more noise than the very quiet std :disagree: I did angle grind the larger tailpipe off and welded a 90deg bend down to keep the oe stealt look and also help reduce the levels a bit and worked quite well :wasntme: sad I know
If space allows another inline silencer will make a big difference
I have also found the intake side of a turbo setup makes more of a difference than you think - Having a better designed airbox and less restrictive will reduce noise levels (in my testing anyway)

i have this one in my shed,
