I've had this itch for a while, but last weekend it finally got scratched! I'm now the owner of one of the RTOC's most (in-)famous Cup Car's - T-Cup!

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/34-1.jpg

I think this is a better photo :wasntme:

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/5.jpg

What with the Engine from Mart's old Trusty and the many Track Days it has attended with Bill, Mart & Col (The Master) it's dam near a piece of RTOC folklore!!

I would like to say a big thanks to the new Bill J/Billy Pallets etc ;) for agreeing to part with it. I promise I will take good care of it & know it's tough for you to be without a Renault 5 GTT parked outside your house for the first time in 12 years!!

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/111.jpg

I would like to thank Pigsnake (aka Luke) for letting me borrow his trailer to collect it from Pallets towers :niceone:

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/99.jpg

So this is how it stands at the moment:

My plan is to get it roadworthy for the 2012 Renault Turbo Festival & give it some stick on the track, then after the Day I plan to try & register it as a road car to help with the further plans.

On a side note, I spoke with a nice person at Renault UK & they were able to tell me that the manufacturing date for this car was 10th November 1989 and it was delivered to the dealer on 27th November 1989! :smokin:

I then plan to give the car a bit of a refresh and am thinking one of the following, i'd be pleased to hear your comments and which one you prefer?? Whatever the colour scheme I will be putting the Original Decals back on also.

Excuse me, oh Holy one?! Those decals are the correct ones, and the correct locations for the 1988/89 seasons, as stated by Renault. Unlike when you had a go at stickering one up, and put them all in the wrong places :cartman: :cooter:

Gutted to see the legend go after all these years. Some awesome times were had building/driving/enjoying that car with Mart, Col etc etc. I know it's gone to a good home though, and I wish you all the best with it Steve.

Oh, and thanks to you/Sarah for the Clio as well. I've been giving it a wee detail this arvo, with all 46 buckets ;)

It's not nice to be without a gtt in my possession after all these years. The 172 is trying it's hardest to make up for it though. I now see what the hype is about regarding the RS Clios - They are awesome little things!

The paintwork's all over the place at the moment. Whatever I do I would want the Engine Bay & Interior to match the exterior.

Looks like a Polar Bear's @rse at the moment with the White outside & the Red inside.

Yeah, you don't need any stickers!
They ran with different ones all the time anyway, so '89 is different to '88.

Looks great!
If it was mine, and I wish it was, I would just keep the basic championship stickers and 'correct' trim for the year - so '89?
Yellow/white would look nice.
Then road register it!!!!

Sam, am I correct in thinking that the White/Yellow is the 89 season colours?

Not sure.
Who knows when that sticker was produced...? 89/90?
So it was supplied as a complete car in '89 from Renault? If they supplied it as a shell, it wouldn't have been stamped with a chassis number/identity.
The team/driver must have bought a brand new car to convert into a racer for the last season in 1990!
And they only used it for a year, otherwise it would have different stickers on for the non-Renault supported championship. I think it was sponsored by Harlow Group in '91 as Renault was supporting the new Clio cup.

How many miles does it have on the clock?

Sam Fish
23-05-2012, 09:20
Ps:
The stickers on the car look very original. I wouldn't touch them! Not many left with the original ones still on there!
Apart from maybe the yellow bits and PMT.

As Bill pointed out when I picked the car up, one distinguishing feature of this car was it's lack of ariel holes which makes me think it's a proper Coupe? It's also got the original un-cut door cards etc.

It's got about 2,164 miles on the clock & Bill told me a story about the speedo on this car being stuck at a certain mileage for a long time which may help some people remember the car??

I'm sure Billy will clarify these stories when he gets on here?

Maybe they reshelled an original into a brand new car? If the chassis number says from Nov '89, the shell must have started life then. The other bits could have come from an original, or could have been bought from Renault - they all had part numbers.

OR.... you could still order a GT Turbo in 'coupe' spec from the factory in '89 and go racing in it? I don't see why not. Maybe not with all the cup bits on, but without sunroof/stereo etc, road registered.

:agree:

From what Colin told me (testing my memory as well), all the Renault built coupe's were sold through Renault London, and they all came with chassis numbers (Like T-Cup). Radbourne Racing built their own cars from bare, brand new shells. They were then given Radbourne chassis numbers, like Kris M's and Jesus' (RAD 1, RAD 2 etc).

I remember Colin telling me that Renault London ordered 50 (spare) coupes, ready for the 1990 season, in anticipation of some of the teams wanting replacment cars if/when they smashed one of theirs up. However, being Renault 5 owners :D, they just bodged the cars back together, and off they went. Because of this, Renault London only sold 5 of that batch, the other 45 were converted back to road cars (but leaving the thicker torsion bars in place) and sold off to Joe Public. All the coupe parts were slung into a store room at Renault London, where Martin Sadler (Who drove the Renault London sponsored coupe - The car which Colin maintained) slowely helped himself

looking at the pics i would say option 2 & 3 would be a bit of a pain as you would need a good condition phase 1 kit unpainted which is going to be a nightmare to find and expensive to buy, option 1 looks the best as the white and yellow are the iconic colours for the turbo cup.
also the image used everywhere of the turbo cup car has a number 5 on it to match yours so a bit of continuity there
cant wait to see this one, let me know if you need and bits flocked for it :agree:

i would go for no5 as it was originally red, but 1 looks good as well .but it has to be all stickered up or what's the point in having a cup car you might as well have got a nominal gtt .
or how about doing it in raider blue all stickered up

So T-Cup's official registration number is:

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/Reg.jpg

With this information I looked on the DVLA's website to see what information they have on it and sure enough:

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/DVLASearch.jpg

I phoned the DVLA up and they told me that all I need to do is fill in a V62 Document and send off the £25 and they will send me back a V5/Logbook!! :niceone:

WIN!

So now I will be able to road register the car and it gives me the ability to test it's running correctly before I take it to the Trackdays.

You can see the information from the DVLA confirms that it should be RED so I'm now swaying back towards a full on replica of Martin Sadler's car shown in Picture number 5??

IMO... keep it as it is. every stickers there for a reason and gives the car its history? New different stickers as much as they would look ace wouldnt show you the life its had.(i know pictures allways look better than in person) The cars meant to be tracked not show and shiny. i say go and rub up against a few other cup cars and make it more authentic :D

They're not the original decals. They are the decals that the cars had to wear in the Championship, but they're replicas that I had done about six/seven years ago. When Mart and me originally got the car it was all white, with the yellow checkers, and blue MOTORSPORT stickers down the sides :crap:

The car's not even the original colour. As already said, it's original colour is red. I think it's also been blue before it was white.

Without wishing to hi-jack your thread too much :ashamed:, just some 'normal' bits and bobs: It's had a full service, and wheel bearings all round, rear brakes, handbrake cables, throttle cable, and some more that I can't remember. That fuel inlet pipe that was cable-tied to the fuel rail has been replaced, as it split :scared:. I've also found a steering wheel that's a lot less melted . I still need to get the wheels re-furbed at some point.

What was up with that rad' that I gave you? That hasn't done many miles, so it should be tip-top. Do you know if it's just the oil line that's split? If so, you can buy it by the metre.

Looks like a fun project steve, you decided what colour you going for eventually? i like the red version stickered up.

I'm swinging back to the stickered up red one again now? As the car was originally red? I'll make my final decision after I get the new log book & hopefully see who the original owner was? Be nice to see if I can trace it back to its proper originality?

I recieved the Logbook for the Cup Car through the post today :cool2: which has meant I can now try to figure out the history of T-Cup! :uhhuh::uhhuh:

It just so happens that many years ago I bought a Championship Information pack from eBay from the 1990 series of the RENAULT 5 elf TURBO UK CUP... that's come in handy today!! ;)

So, it appears I'm the SECOND official owner of T-Cup according to the DVLA, the first was a guy called Stephen Jones from Bury. :smokin:

When I look at the Information Pack It tells me that the driver of car number 28 was a guy called STEVE JONES from (you've guessed it) BURY! :yeah::yeah::yeah:Apparently he was born in 1963 and he's a Salesman (How fitting really as we share the same first name and job!)

On one of the pages in the pack, it tells me that the Championship Results after Round 1 at Thruxton are:
James Kaye
Dave Cox
Steve Waudby
Steve Jones
Mark Fish
Jim Edwards Snr
Mile Mills
Mickey Allen
Rowland Bratt
Jonathan Salem
So it appears the old girl was competitive!!!!

I'm now off to look at the DVD copy of the 1990 Series that Bill was kind enough to loan me to see if I can spot T-Cup in all her glory!!!:cool::cool::cool::cool:

Thanks to the loan of the 1990 Series Cup Car DVD from Billy Pallets, I've watched it very closely tonight and have taken the following pictures on my TV (that explains the questionable quality) of Cup Car number 28 which is driven by Steve Jones.

The car he drove in the 1990 Series was White which matches T-Cup :D. But it seems bizarre that he ordered a Red car and then painted it white?? Still anything's possible I guess??

At the beginning of the season the car looked like this with quite a subdued livery:

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/1.jpg

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/2.jpg

When I bought the car from Billy, he told me that it looked like it had a little accident in the N/S Rear; as you can see where they hammered it out....... well on the video you can see the accident happen!!! He got a punt in the rear N/S Qtr and got spun round! This certainly adds to the case for this being the same car!

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/3.jpg

As the season passed, the livery changed slightly but kept the same sponsors:

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/6.jpg

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/13.jpg

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/7.jpg

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/8.jpg

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/12.jpg

During the last race of the season, Steve Jones actually had an In-Car video fitted to his car, and there is some nice video of him driving it!! :niceone:

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/5-1.jpg

And there's also a quick picture of the car on the starting grid at one of the races:

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/4.jpg

Turns out that Steve Jones was a bit of a wheelman, finishing in the top 5 of many of the races from the 1990 Series!! :niceone::niceone::niceone:

:laugh::laugh::laugh: WOW, JLS Vehicle Security (http://www.jls-security.co.uk/index.htm) are still going strong! Can't find any record of Thermafab in the UK though?

So it looks like i'll be sticking with the White paint job, but i'm tempted to paint the Interior and engine bay to match? What do you think guys??

It's a shame you can't see in the pics if it's red on the inside. I'd be tempted to keep it as it is (red inside, white outside). It might look a bit odd, but if that's how it originally ran, I say keep it that way :D

You've got to try and track down Mr Jones. The one way to find out if it's the same car is to ask him about the 44 miles on the clock ;)

Last weekend I finished off the overhaul of the brakes fitting newly overhauled calipers, new front disks and Ferodo DS2500 Pads all round:

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_2899.jpg

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_2903.jpg

I also went through the fuelling system and removed a couple of things.... first I replaced the steel fuel filler neck with a nice Plastic Campus one. I reckon this steel fuel filler neck looks like the front section of an exhaust...

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_2905.jpg

The inside of it was surprisingly clean actually:

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_2907.jpg

I also removed the fuel tank and washed it out.

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_2910.jpg

Again I found some interesting things in the fuel tank..... a handful of grass (not that sort of grass... I think!?:wasntme: ) and a fuel filler nozzle?!

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_2908.jpg

Yep, i'm not kidding you! That black fuel filler nozzle was floating around in the tank?? Any of the PMT Trackday crew remember losing it one day

So that leads me to, tonight:

What a F'ckin nightmare of a weekend trying to get the car all ready for next weekend's Festival: 9 hours Saturday & 11 hours Sunday :crap:

Cleaned & degreased the engine & engine bay
Fitted 11 turbo gearbox
Dropped engine & gearbox back in
Fitted exhaust pipe bung
Swapped discs round (Thanks Mart ;))
Adjusted seat slightly

Car is effectively back together now but it's not quite running as sweet at it always was, (got some water round the dizzy & plugs etc) so need to fit new plugs & dizzy cap etc to make sure that's  and also need to have another go at adjusting the new gear selector rod as I can't seem to get 5th gear or reverse properly

Glad I'm going to be at Blyton early on Friday to give me chance to give it a run round, finalise a few things & bed the brakes in!

Not unless you've got wads of cash with you. The place is a little treasure trove of Renault goodies! if you get stuck mate ive got the correct thickness gasket paper at work. could make you one if you get really stuck

Mate I feel like it's one step forwards, fifteen steps back at the moment :crap: I reckon i'll be bringing the cup to sit on the trailer as a showpiece at the moment

But FFS bring some of that Gasket if you can, be prepared as Baden Powell said!

Ive just re-read this, you dont need a gasket for the blanking plate? Why not just take it off and seal it up? Will be fine. Thixo or stikaflex, anything will do

Thought it was time for me to update the progress on the ST-Cup. Couldn't believe i didn't update this thread since BEFORE Blyton in 2012?! Where DOES the time go?!

Anyway following on from the previous posts, I was all ready for the RTOC 2012 Festival Blyton Park and on the Friday I loaded the car onto the trailer and set off to the petrol station to Filler'up!? It soon became evident that the F***ing bung in the petrol tank had split so fuel was gushing out! :crap:

I figured I couldn't do anything further with the car until I got to Blyton so I drove all the way up there with fuel spilling out of the tank. A lit match would have marked my journey there that day?!

When I got to Blyton I set to work trying to fix it and had to end up removing the tank and lashing loads of various chemical metal/sealants etc all over it to get it to seal. It was a real job from hell  and I would like to thank Tony Walker, Kris M and Nick Kettle for their help in sorting it that day! :niceone:

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/FixUp.jpg

The next day I was ready for the Blyton Park Trackday and when I went out on the sighting lap i realised it was the first time i'd actually driven the car any further than up & down my drive?!

The sighting laps proved to me that the work I had done on the brakes/cooling had been worthwhile so I immediately put the slicks on and got stuck into the day! It's fair to say that I soon got the hang of T-Cup and loved every minute

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/RTOC%20Fun%202/_MG_2720.jpg

I was really impressed by T-Cup on the track at Blyton, and had no complaints at how it either went or stopped for that matter!!

During the day at Blyton I gave T-Cup to the guys from M-Tech automotive and gave it a run on the rollers.

YOUTUBE LINKY (http://youtu.be/GLDxHeC9060)

It was at this point that I suspected the old engine out of Trusty might have seen better days as the peak power the car produced was 135.9HP at the flywheel (lets not get into that whole Rolling road figures debate ). I had a chat with Bill and he reckoned a few horses had bolted the stable the last time he drove it?

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/BlytonRRGraph.jpg
When I got the car home I checked to see what the compression was and was surprised to see a reading of 45 - 50 psi across all cylinders?? I first thought it was a monkey pressure tester so got a second hand Snap On one... sure enough that improved the situation a little but still only showed a max of 75 psi. So with that I decided to give the engine a well deserved rebuild!

Big Steve - Raider
04-01-2013, 16:51
So first thing was to whip the engine back out of T-Cup

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_2919.jpg

And I then completely disassembled the engine to it's component parts.

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_2987.jpg

When I disassembled it though, it looked as though their had been something rattling around in the sump at one time that knocked 7 bells of sh1te out of the bottom of piston #1?

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_2984.jpg

I need to upload some pictures of the Con-Rod and bottom of the piston, in the picture above, you can see some scratches on the walls of the block, but the piston looked REALLY bad?! :(

I took the block to Surface Processing Limited (http://www.surfaceprocessing.co.uk/) in Birmingham to be chemically dipped and stripped of all the nasty paint & rust & it came back looking like new

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_3021.jpg

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_3024.jpg

I then got busy with the old engine enamel and gave it a few coats

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_3025.jpg

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_3026.jpg

I've then had the crankshaft re-ground, Knife edged, tuftrided, polished and then finally balanced ready to go back in

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_3028.jpg

I had Nick Kettle and Kris M come over to see me for the weekend of the Southern Christmas Dooo in December, so I put them both to work helping me put it back together to stave off sitting in the pub ALL day!

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_3029.jpg

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_3031.jpg

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_3033.jpg

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_3034.jpg

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_3036.jpg

I had the head re-skimmed, new valves fitted and then the exhaust ports matched to the manifold.

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_3038.jpg

I've now installed a Piper 270 cam (decided against the 285 because I'm not looking for big power, just more useability on track) and vernier pulley.

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_3037.jpg

Kris came over to see me again during Christmas (to drink us dry as he'd exhaused his family's supply of booze) :wasntme: and helped me fit the head on

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_3042.jpg

Together with the bit of bling I just couldn't resist, a set of the Alloy roller bearing cam followers that were being discussed on here a couple of days ago (http://www.rtoc.org/boards/showthread.php?t=31393&highlight=roller). I'll let you know how they turn out?!

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/IMG_3041.jpg

Don't worry, I know i've still got to put the pushrods in! :cooter:

So that brings you up to exactly where I am now! :) I've yet to get the cam timing sorted (was waiting for a DTI Gauge to arrive but Mart has lent me one so I can get cracking this weekend) so that's what i'll be doing this weekend!! :niceone:

Thanks for looking guys! :D

When I first got ol'whitey running it ran spot on but due to a few smokey issues I did a comp test and got similar low results. I put it down to it being sitting for a long time and the rings either losing their spring or becoming seized into the pistons... I've never stripped it down to have a look.

Mad thread! Have you found out anymore history Steve? Did u ever get in touch with the original owner?

Funny this thread should just come back to the top of the pile now!? :) I've not managed to get in contact with Mr Steve Jones as yet, but "Thomson Detectives Incorporated" are certainly picking up a few more leads on him....

I recently won a piece of Cup Car Gold on eBay. The full 1987 and 1990 Press Packs from the elf Turbo UK Cup and in the 1987 pack was a picture of every driver who raced in the 1987 series.....

http://i306.photobucket.com/albums/nn259/BigSteveT/Cup%20Car/Cup1.jpg (http://s306.photobucket.com/user/BigSteveT/media/Cup%20Car/Cup1.jpg.html)

So there's my man, Mr Steve Jones bottom right next to Barrie Whizzo Williams!! In the pack was also his Biog and I know

In 1987 he was 23 (so he's 49/50 now)
He was a Self Employed Gents Clothing Retailer in Bury!
His racing background was the 5TS challenge, runner up 1985 and then winner in 1986, so he obviously had some pedigree!!
I've also scanned all the rest of the pictures of the drivers from the 1987 championship so you can have a look:
