View Full Version : Suspension Height
Have just swapped over the front springs and the car is sitting too high :crap: any ideas on what else, can the shocks cause it to sit too high or is this really the height this should be sitting for standard. These are original springs.

Looks like my phase 1 running height, from memory all my raiders were lower than that as standard. I have a picture of my old raider fitted with phase 1 springs.
Going to do other things to it first might unbolt in next weekend. Got two other springs might see if they are different heights
Think you just hit mail on head :/ other springs are shorter, least I got practice removing them :)

I found i had broke a spring when mot came round so fitted some phase 1 springs i had laying around, practically same length as campus springs. Look way to high, my current phase 1 car looks the same height as yours.
I'm getting confused now both look lower than what was originally on there but just removed spring but no difference when swapping over :(

You might have to take it for a spin mate, i found shockers need a little driving to compress them back down.
Yeah but settle down a few inches? Doubt got two sets of phase 1 springs. Any know height of standard shock on its own with top part on.
Its the spring length that sets the rideheight matey, probably best off looking for 2nd hand o.e

They are second hand from Mike, got two sets off him then got that shot blasted and powdercoated, they were ones with original colouring on them. Thats why im confused on why its still sitting so high.
are you sure they are not campus springs?

I would have thought to be that high they must be campus springs, but can't see mike making that mistake:scratch:
Whilst down there we removed a set off a front end, definitely gt turbo springs. That's why thinking towards the shock absorber. Going over to Sams tomorrow to see if can see anything wrong there

Could it be that they are phase 2 shocks?

They are phase two shocks. These were purchased new, they look right but that's why wanted to know height of standard just in case these were made wrong and causes it to sit higher than normal.
if the springs are definately for GT Turbo then it must be the shocks. do you not have any other shocks you can try?

Sold all spare ones, might borrow sams and see what it does. Don't take long to change them over
mine sits like yours in the picture. i have a set of 2nd hand gt springs and a set of the new springs so i am keeping an eye on this thread.

i have got some standard shocks you can use to try if you get stuck.
Pic side by side wold be helpful as I'll be fitting new next week. Noticed mine were only a little bit bigger than the ones I took off.

Aftermarket springs compared to the standard ones which I got powdered are slightly different in height, only small amounts but that could just be down to use. So maybe those 3 sets of springs I went through before hand we all right and its something else causing a problem.

How high is the bottom cup up the damper?
I don't have phase 2 ones but maybe someone could measure their's and see if your ones are the same? That could cause the extra height.

I'll measure mine later pal
Right have had a measure from cup to bottom of shock, exactely same height :crap: so now im thinking somebody else could be the cause  Going to borrow a complete suspension kit which is standard to see if that makes any difference else could the hub be holding the suspension too high? Is there is any difference between the models?
Its 21cm height wise on standard and my shock from cup downwards.
Fitted my new front shocks and springs on Monday evening - looked like a speedboat.
Swapped the old ones back on and fine.
There was a couple of inches difference. Maybe the Oem springs had compressed over the years but wouldn't have thought so.
Much better with the Oem ones back on.
PM'd Tinka Dill and he replied saying its 22.5" from floor to bottom of arch, measured my mates 5 who is all original and its same height as mine as well which is just over 23.5" (61cm)
Plus realised back end is still sitting too low, need to raise that up by 5cm or so :crap: which might be making me think the front is sitting too high due to the way of sitting. Measured from the floor to bottom of sill which is 17cm I think it was and at back it should be about 22cm I think I measured from my mates car.

I can confirm, what Dale said. They can of of a R5 Phase 2 GT Turbo and had the green and grey paint still on them. He took a secondhand set with ,markings still on just in case.
fitted a 2nd hand set of proper gt springs to my car yesterday and it looks so much better. the springs that were on the car when i got it were slightly thicker and around 10mm longer. my front dampers had ph2 markings on
