I am having a little tidy up of my garage. Checked my spare T2 turbo and noticed a crack in the rear housing. Does this crack mean the turbo is scrap? Or is it still usable. There is 0 play in the shaft.

Just change the rear housing, no need to replace the core or comp housing it's only the rear that's cracked

Change rear housing as oli says. You can get away with cracks but that one is opening up so I wouldn't risk it.

i thought we were on about the exhaust housing:confused::laugh:

if your running more than 15 psi on that turbo (asuming standard unit)
then i would look for an upgrade , something bigger with 360 bearing for longer term reliability at higher than standard boost levels, it will work less and not heat up the air temps as much as the t2 unit, or if you got bigger bhp plans for the engine and want to push past the 20 psi ,then maybe a rollerbearing for ultimate long term reliability, but they are quite expensive;)

it is just a standard T2. my car is standard and running standard boost. this is my spare turbo and not the one on my car currently.

so am i right in thinking this will be okay to use if/when my current T2 goes pop?

I've seen turbos with cracks you could fit a pound coin in at they still have worked. Ok the turbo hasn't been as good as a non cracked one but still worked. put it back on and keep an eye out for a good replacement.

how easy is it to replace the rear housing? is it a job for a turbo specialist?

it is a spare unit so not in any real rush to sort this.

Only need to replace if the turbo's struggling to build/maintain boost.

you can do it yourself! undo the bolts and then tap the rear housing with a rubber hammer!

Exactly, ive used turbos with cracked rear housings for thousands of miles. Why replace when 99% of the time it wont cause a problem...some people panic too much;)
