I want to change my oil and filter. I know you have to get at the filter through the wheel arch. I know room is tight so what type of oil filter wrench should I buy?

What do you mean? Puncture it for leverage?

Yes hit it threw and turn it. There will be oil leaking.

Oil filter pliers are the best. Screwdriver method is risky as the whole filter can rip off leaving the ring in place

I use the pliers on the b18ft with a lot less room than a c1j and they work very well.

Too true :agree:... Although when I changed my oil filter on my White R5, I had to remove the alternator + arm and also the bracket that hold the alternator. Relatively easy (or easier) once removed. Still had to use a screwdriver to take off as I did not have this tool. Also, putting the new filter is only going to be "hand tight" unless you have the wrench.

Blue 5 was put on a ramp and filter got to from underneath the car, even easier... But you need a ramp!

Filters only go on hand tight. Little bit of oil on seal job done.

Hand tight, even when mine come off I can undo them with my hand;)

Before now i have used the screwdriver method on othercars but I agree with brigsy the oil filter pliers are easy to get in and get a good grip on the filter, you only need to break the seal then it should come off no problem:)

I once used the scredriver method on a 1000cc triumph speed triple and the filter just came off and left the ring in place was a complete arse to get that off i can tell you:mad:

I always do mine up hand tight but always have to fight the filter off. My top tip is use a long screwdriver and tap the ring on the oil filter loose from the passenger side, if you pull the top hose over and carefully hit the screwdriver its easy to do..makes it easier to get off from underneath

as above do it up hand tight, give it that extra little pinch and should be good, just check it after a few drives to be sure.

ive tried the normal filter removal tools , pain in the ass imo ,just not enough space to turn.

Been and bought one of these, as you turn from the front . not had time to use it yet though

New poster! (less than 10 posts)

Use an oil filter strap, the band goes round the filter body. Then you tighten the arm to pull the strap tight.
Got mine from Machine Mart, cost £15ish and has repaid itself time and again.

Bad idea to puncture the body, there is a slight risk of getting metal contaminates into the oil passages.

I cant express my discouragement in the screwdriver method.

Yes the oil filter goes on hand tight, but the thermal expansion of rubber and metal means they become tighter over time.

Be safe out there. :coffee:
